{"id":43958,"date":"2025-01-24T00:24:05","date_gmt":"2025-01-24T00:24:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/finance\/donald-trump-piles-pressure-on-federal-reserve-chair-jay-powell-to-cut-interest-rates\/"},"modified":"2025-01-24T00:24:05","modified_gmt":"2025-01-24T00:24:05","slug":"donald-trump-piles-pressure-on-federal-reserve-chair-jay-powell-to-cut-interest-rates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=43958","title":{"rendered":"Donald Trump piles pressure on Federal Reserve chair Jay Powell to cut interest rates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__content-sign-up-topic-description\">Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"article__content-sign-up-iframe close\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"signUpIframe\" data-prev-url=\"\/register\/in-article-sign-up?ft-content-uuid=8b80a0fd-d0a7-4cae-9f7a-f006928f790a&amp;newsletter-id=65b8fec772badb00166eafc6\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Donald Trump has raised the pressure on Federal Reserve chair Jay Powell to cut borrowing costs, setting up a potential clash between the two men less than a week before the US central bank meets to set interest rates.<\/p>\n<p>During an appearance in the Oval Office on Thursday to sign several new executive orders, Trump said he knew <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/us-interest-rates\" data-trackable=\"link\">rates<\/a> \u201cmuch better\u201d than the Fed, and he would like to see them come down \u201ca lot\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The US central bank is widely expected to hold its benchmark rate between 4.25-4.5 per cent next week, marking a pause after three consecutive cuts since September.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/federal-reserve\" data-trackable=\"link\">Fed<\/a> has signalled a slower pace of cuts this year with some officials concerned that\u00a0Trump\u2019s plan to raise tariffs, slash taxes and crack down on immigration will hinder efforts to beat back inflation to 2 per cent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe concerns [at the Fed] are not just about tariffs, but also a recognition that fiscal policy is not going to help bring inflation down,\u201d said Mahmood Pradhan, economist at Amundi.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the Fed\u2019s more cautious posture puts it on a collision course with the new US president.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/donald-trump\" data-trackable=\"link\">Trump<\/a> on Thursday said he expected the Fed to listen to his demands and would speak to Powell \u201cat the right time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I know interest rates much better than they do, and I think I know them certainly much better than the one who\u2019s primarily in charge of making that decision,\u201d Trump said.\u00a0\u201cIf I disagree, I will let it be known.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump elevated Powell to Fed chair during his first term in office, but was often critical of him, especially for not cutting rates quickly enough in 2019. The president indicated on the campaign trail last year that he would not try to remove Powell from his position before his term expires in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the Fed continue to keep rates where they are and he thinks that it would be great to get a boost out of lower rates, then there\u2019s a real chance of conflict,\u201d said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, president of the American Action Forum, a centre-right policy institute.<\/p>\n<p>Some economists have said that if Trump\u2019s policies push up prices it could compel the Fed to hold back from further cuts or even raise borrowing costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the administration do stuff that really starts to push up the rate of inflation, the Fed mandate is quite clear \u2014 they will push up rates. And they will get it in the neck [from Trump] if they do,\u201d said Mark Blyth, economics professor at Brown University.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump used a speech to executives in Davos earlier on Thursday to say he wanted rates to come down \u201call over the world\u201d \u2014 and told the Opec cartel to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/af9a3a17-cf32-4d4c-b2e1-97ea7c5e2bb1\" data-trackable=\"link\">bring down oil prices<\/a> to make that happen.<\/p>\n<p>He touched on the theme again in his Oval Office remarks to reporters a few hours later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like to see oil prices come down, and when the energy comes down, that\u2019s going to knock out a lot of the inflation. That\u2019s going to automatically bring the interest rates down,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>He also on Thursday raised new doubts about Washington\u2019s commitment to Nato and called for more defence spending by the US\u2019s allies in the treaty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re not protecting us,\u201d he said of the Nato countries. \u201cWe\u2019re protecting them. So I don\u2019t think we should be spending, I\u2019m not sure we should be spending anything, but we should certainly be helping them.
