Over the years there has been much debate over the American Method and what it is? It has been hailed and demonized, depending on who you talk to but more than anything, it has been misunderstood by many. I can say this with certainty for I spent ten years of my life studying the Method with various teachers in New York City, before becoming one myself. <\/span>Whatever <\/span><\/span><\/strong>you think you may know<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong> about actors and acting is <\/span><\/span><\/strong>nothing<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong> compared to what you would learn about them in a Method class.<\/span><\/span><\/strong> <\/span>Public perception of the Method has often been based on myths,<\/span><\/em> so I\u2019d like to clear the air on a few of those and offer a few facts along the way.<\/span>
\n<\/span>In a nutshell, <\/span>the American Method is a technique by which actors learn to behave realistically in an imaginary landscape.<\/span><\/strong> This is the polar opposite of pretending, which is, by definition, \u201cfalse behavior\u201d. <\/span>The Method trains actors to achieve a level of emotional truth that can be applied to a given situation within a text. <\/span><\/em>This personal truth is the emotional fuel the actor uses to bring the scene to a detailed, realistic life.<\/span>

\n<\/span>Until this point, the universal <\/span>acting<\/span><\/em> style had been <\/span>very presentational<\/span><\/em>, in that actors used large, codified gestures to signal emotions to the audience. By modern standards, this style was quite superficial and had nothing in common with natural human behavior. The work of Stanislavsky\/Strasberg would change the look and sound of modern acting forever. Now while <\/span>Strasberg remains the dominant face<\/span><\/span><\/em> of the American Method, <\/span><\/span>not everyone agreed with his approach, <\/span><\/span><\/em>which was largely psychological.<\/span><\/span> Some disagreed so much, that they broke off from the Actor\u2019s Studio to form their own schools, notably <\/span>Stella Adler<\/span><\/strong> and <\/span>Sanford Meisner<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n<\/span>When we talk about “Method” Acting today, we have to understand there\u2019s no single approach to it, but actually three major ones, with some subdivisions beneath those.<\/span> <\/span><\/em>Strasberg\u2019s <\/span><\/em><\/strong>was based in the<\/span><\/strong> psychology<\/span><\/em><\/strong> of the character, <\/span><\/strong>Adler\u2019s<\/span><\/em><\/strong> was focused on the character\u2019s <\/span><\/strong>sociology<\/span><\/em><\/strong> and <\/span><\/strong>Meisner\u2019s<\/span><\/em><\/strong> largely on a character\u2019s patterns of <\/span><\/strong>behavior<\/span><\/em><\/strong>. As you\u2019d expect, the training you receive in these schools is considerably different, although there is some common ground as well.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n<\/span>Misunderstandings<\/span><\/em> about the Method spring largely from <\/span>overblown media <\/span><\/em>coverage of famous actors doing \u201ccrazy\u201d things in their prep and performance of roles. The tragic death of <\/span>Heath Ledger <\/span><\/u>is a good example of this. Ledger died from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs during a bout of insomnia, after completing work on a Batman movie, where he played the sociopathic Joker. An almost immediate rumor went viral that Ledger had <\/span>become crazy<\/span><\/em>, in order to <\/span>play a crazy<\/span><\/em> character and subsequently killed himself to escape his own madness. The only crazy thing about this story is just how big it blew up and how the blame got pinned on Method acting, instead of the MD who prescribed way too much medication for the poor guy. Look, I\u2019ve known hundreds of working actors and by and large, they\u2019re as<\/span> sane<\/span><\/em> a group of people as the next. Some are a bit less sane than others but I would attribute their wackiness more to their family’s DNA than I would their actor’s training.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n<\/span>Fine, so if Method Acting isn\u2019t going to make you crazy, then maybe it\u2019s not so bad? Well, actors have been getting trained this way for about 75 years, so there must to be some benefit to it. From <\/span>Marlon Brando to Al Pacino to Charlize Theron<\/span><\/strong>, actors have been using the Method in their careers and they\u2019ve all done pretty well. So what\u2019s the secret to this \u201cmethod\u201d? Honestly, <\/span>there is no secret<\/span><\/em>, <\/span>it\u2019s a system of approaching characters, situations and written material with the goal of bringing it to believable life.<\/span><\/u> The training that I received back in the 90\u2019s was a fusion of all three schools, though the emphasis was on Strasberg\u2019s teachings. There\u2019s no way to distill years of study into a few pages but I can give you a few of the key concepts that we work with in class.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n<\/span>Working with substitutions just means using sense memory \u201cpersons\u201d and \u201cplaces\u201d from your own past and plugging them into your present circumstances. <\/span><\/span>In other words, instead of working with an actor\/character who doesn\u2019t make you feel an emotion, you\u2019re working with a sensory person from your past, who<\/span> actually<\/span><\/em> makes you <\/span>feel that emotion<\/span><\/em>. Why settle for less than the real thing, right? Memory is kind of a slippery thing but it is accessible, you just have to figure out what triggers it. Sometimes it\u2019s a <\/span>smell<\/span><\/em>, or an<\/span> image<\/span><\/em>, or a <\/span>touching<\/span><\/em> an object from our past \u2014 the formula is always different but the approach remains the same. It\u2019s a little like Alice walking through the looking glass \u2014 after you do it the first time, it just gets easier.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n<\/span>I do want to point out that while you\u2019re working with these tools, <\/span>you never stop being anybody but yourself.<\/span><\/em> Certainly, we\u2019ve all heard the stories about actors getting lost in their characters but those are myths, I don\u2019t know any actor that\u2019s ever gotten this kind of character amnesia, it\u2019s just not true. Yes, you will see actors go through<\/span> physical transformations<\/span><\/em> when preparing for a role, <\/span>De Niro<\/span><\/strong> popularized this kind of thing and<\/span> Jarod Leto<\/span><\/strong> has taken it to a logical extreme in recent years. Now it may look like they\u2019ve become someone else, sure, that\u2019s part of the actors’ job isn\u2019t it?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n<\/span>Professional actors have to juggle many things while they\u2019re working \u2014 emotions, mental focus, technical attention to a live audience or the camera \u2014 all the while remaining physically relaxed so all of those things flow naturally. <\/span>Great performances by actors are the culmination of <\/span><\/span>training, repetition, hard work and talent. <\/span><\/span><\/em>Despite the ongoing media <\/span>hype<\/span><\/strong> about it, the American Method remains a major contribution to the field of modern acting. It may no longer seem <\/span>revolutionary<\/span><\/em> in 2020 but for<\/span> young actors<\/span><\/em> looking for real, robust training, it can still be <\/span>revelatory<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
