There are many fascinating stories in the Bible about ordinary people doing courageous things. David and Goliath is about a shepherd boy killing a giant no one else even dared to face.

Noah, ridiculed by everyone in the community, built a boat to save his family from the great flood.

Esther, a young Jewish girl, faced the wicked Haman who sought to annihilate the Jewish people.

Moses, prince turned shepherd, led the Israelites out of Egypt with the entire Egyptian army at his back.

Rahab, a prostitute, risked her life to help the Israelites conquer Jericho on their way to the promised land.

Although they came from different backgrounds, these small-town heroes had some things in common: Faith and determination. They did not set out to become heroes. They were content living their simple lives until something stood in their way they couldn’t ignore. Even though the outcome was uncertain, they took a stand and slayed their giant.

I have situations in my life right now I wish would just go away. I’ve prayed about it, tried to find solutions, asked for advice, and hoped if I stayed busy enough it would resolve itself. But it’s still there, just like Goliath, daring me to fight back.

As much as we wish for peace in our lives, this world doesn’t accommodate. There are times we will have to step out of our comfort zone and do the hard thing, the thing we never want to do. But just like our heroes, we need to face our giants.

Many verses in the Bible talk about our need to be strong and courageous. I don’t like those verses simply because I don’t always feel strong and courageous, but God does ask us to do just that. It’s not a feeling, it’s faith. It’s faith in the only One that can help us be strong and can give us the courage to do what we need to do. Don’t fear your giant, stand up in faith.
