{"id":42899,"date":"2025-01-23T11:23:53","date_gmt":"2025-01-23T11:23:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/business\/legal\/uk-has-highest-incidence-of-mesothelioma-in-the-world-says-doctor\/"},"modified":"2025-01-23T11:23:53","modified_gmt":"2025-01-23T11:23:53","slug":"uk-has-highest-incidence-of-mesothelioma-in-the-world-says-doctor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=42899","title":{"rendered":"\u201cUK Has Highest Incidence of Mesothelioma in the World,\u201d Says Doctor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cUK Has Highest Incidence of Mesothelioma in the World,\u201d Says Doctor<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In a letter published by the Guardian 2<sup>nd<\/sup> of January, Dr Gill Reed,\u00a0Former technical adviser, <a href=\"https:\/\/the-juac.co.uk\/\">Joint Union Asbestos Committee<\/a>, proclaimed the UK to have the highest percentage of mesothelioma cases in the world due to asbestos exposure.<\/p>\n<p>He also wrote that the Guardian\u2019s investigation of underinvestment in public buildings revealed its detrimental impact, and revealed as many as 1.5m children in England were studying in unfit school buildings (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2024\/dec\/27\/revealed-children-in-england-studying-in-unfit-school-buildings-crumbling-infrastructure\">read more here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>He also commented that it was \u201cheartening\u201d that a government spokesperson has remarked that \u201cimmediate action to remedy the state of disrepair\u201d should be taken.<\/p>\n<p>Upon divulging that UK building condition surveys and asbestos regulations do not include a measure of the risk of staff and children developing incurable mesothelioma cancer from long-term asbestos exposure in public buildings, he expostulated over the government\u2019s inaction to prevent further fatalities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UK now has the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mesothelioma.uk.com\/mesothelioma-national-statistics\/\">highest incidence of mesothelioma<\/a>\u00a0in the world, and the\u00a0evidence indicates that hundreds of thousands of children and staff may die from it in future because they were exposed\u00a0to asbestos in their former schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government should take immediate action to develop asbestos regulations and funding for the identification and remediation, as necessary, of all schools with unsafe asbestos levels. Our children\u00a0deserve no less.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doctor Reed\u2019s investigation\u2019s findings were published last year by <a href=\"https:\/\/neu.org.uk\/\">the National Education Union<\/a> and can be read <a href=\"https:\/\/neu.org.uk\/latest\/library\/what-real-risk-asbestos-schools\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian concluded Reed\u2019s assertions with the opinion of one<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Ed Campbell, who blamed underfunding for most public buildings\u2019 inevitable deterioration. \u201cTwenty years ago, I was responsible for the preparation of both the school organisation plan and the asset management plan for a local education authority (LEA) of about 10 secondary schools and 60 primary, special and nursery schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Campbell calculated that \u00a310m should be set aside annually for the planned replacement of the school stock over a rolling 60-year period; \u00a34.5m for capitalised planned maintenance, \u00a33m for curriculum developments requiring alteration and modernisation, and \u00a32.5m for \u201cunpredictables\u201d (for example, health and safety legislation, removal of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete, asbestos and disabled access).<\/p>\n<p>Campbell also explained that, since the 1970s, the annual government cap on borrowing to invest in schools in his LEA has never surpassed \u00a32m, meaning deterioration of these buildings has always been not only likely but a given.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, one-off approvals for new schools aren\u2019t adequate to deal with the surmounting issues. Inadequate private finance initiative credits have left the LEA with an annual deficit of \u00a35m, making it more difficult than ever to pay the concessionaires.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBelated recognition of the problem is welcome.
