It got me thinking and reflecting over the last year, what are some of the benefits of being debt free?<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s post highlights those benefits from my perspective. I welcome your thoughts as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully this post helps you on your journey\u2026<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Benefits of being debt free<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To back-up, here is that debt free post:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"8wcqHo7Tb2\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/weekend-reading-debt-free-edition\/\">Weekend Reading \u2013 Debt free edition<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content lazyload\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cWeekend Reading \u2013 Debt free edition\u201d \u2014 My Own Advisor\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/weekend-reading-debt-free-edition\/embed\/#?secret=dVKKlm0J4M#?secret=8wcqHo7Tb2\" data-secret=\"8wcqHo7Tb2\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>After years, <em>decades in fact,<\/em> of paying off our mortgage; moving a couple of times to upsize then downsize to where we are now, even while interest rates were low (!) my wife and I finally reached debt freedom over 12 months ago from the time of this post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the feeling of making that final mortgage payment <em>after years of mortgage payments<\/em> was rather liberating.<\/p>\n<p>A heavy weight was removed off my shoulders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6603 aligncenter lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Debt-1-300x294.gif\" alt=\"Benefits of being debt free\" width=\"300\" height=\"294\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6603 aligncenter lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Debt-1-300x294.gif\" alt=\"Benefits of being debt free\" width=\"300\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Debt-1-300x294.gif 300w, https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Debt-1-60x60.gif 60w, https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Debt-1.gif 395w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In fact, I still feel that way all these months later\u2026.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Benefits of being debt free<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Large or small debt can eat away at you, emotionally and financially. I hear that from readers from time to time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve stated this on my site for many years now, but I find emotions might run higher and hotter when it comes to personal finance and investing over pure math. Sometimes the best financial decisions are the feel-good decisions even though the math might not make sense. I\u2019ve always preferred making rational decisions and moving on with my life over the anxiety of trying to make the perfect decision.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>High amounts of sustained debt are likely to cause some people a lot of stress \u2013 as you try to figure out how you can pay other people first. That said, once debt is more manageable or better yet gone, living debt free can deliver profound benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few positive changes that I believe being debt free can bring:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Tangible financial benefits:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li><strong>Less monthly bills. <\/strong>No credit card debt, no car payments, no mortgage payments, no problems. Less bills simplifies your financial life and leaves:\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li><strong>More money in the bank. <\/strong>No payments to others keeps more money in the bank\/reserved for us, so that we have:\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li><strong>More financial flexibility:<\/strong> Debt is an anchor to financial flexibility. You pay other people first. Money sent to other people means less financial flexibility for me \u2013 what I could be doing with any money instead. I could save more, invest more or spend more or all of these things as I wish.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>2. Psychological and health benefits:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The feeling you have being debt free is harder to quantify but nonetheless rewarding. I\u2019ve used this quote before and it now applies to me\/us: from Morgan Housel\u2019s book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myownadvisor.ca\/the-psychology-of-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Psychology of Money.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of Housel\u2019s confessions from his book:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u201c<em>We own our house without a mortgage, which is the worst financial decision we\u2019ve ever made but the best money decision we\u2019ve ever made.\u201d \u201cOn paper (paying off a mortgage with rates so low), it\u2019s defenseless. But it works for us.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Here are some non-financial benefits:<\/p>\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li><strong>With financial flexibility comes empowerment: <\/strong>With our current paycheques and\/or investments working for us, we feel empowered to make better decisions: to save, to invest or to spend money on things we value. Feeling empowered leads to:\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li><strong>Better financial choices. <\/strong>I\u2019ve hardly been financially perfect over the years but I do believe I am making smarter financial decisions with time. No debt can have a compounding effect that can include positive energy and motiviation which can also bring about:\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li><strong>Less stress and better overall wellness.\u00a0<\/strong>No debt has provided us an opportunity to consider work on our own terms, a form of financial independence and freedom that considers less full-time hours, more time and energy to do other things; more life-work balance and not the other way around.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019m sure I\u2019ve left some things off this list but I think you get the idea.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Getting out of debt and staying out of debt might be an important goal in your own financial journey based on your situation.
