*The Last Witch on Skye* by Carolyn J. Nicholson is a charming and imaginative middle-grade fantasy that whisks readers away to the enchanting Isle of Skye. This delightful tale, complemented by eight full-page illustrations and a map, is steeped in the rich folklore and culture of the Scottish island, making it an immersive read for young audiences.

The story follows Magaidh, the last witch on Skye, who is forced into hiding after the Ban the Witches and Fairies (BW&F) Party expels all supernatural beings from the island. Disguised as a cat, Magaidh takes refuge in a castle, all the while plotting with the Queen of the Fairies to rescue the Fairy Flag and restore peace to Skye. As she reestablishes her magical business, Spells, Inc., Magaidh is torn between seeking revenge on the BW&F Party and following the Fairy Queen’s advice to pursue peace.

Nicholson weaves a gentle yet rollicking tale that follows Magaidh and her two fairy friends, Sean and Iain, on a series of adventures. From rescuing a baby Welsh dragon to befriending a mischievous baby water horse named Calum, Magaidh’s journey is filled with whimsical encounters and heartwarming moments. Along the way, she uncovers the truth about her heritage—discovering that she is only half-supernatural, with her human father being a leader of the very party that ousted her kind.

The novel’s themes of family, tolerance, and acceptance are beautifully explored as Magaidh grapples with her identity and seeks to forge a connection with her estranged father. The inclusion of Gaelic names and phrases, along with a helpful pronunciation guide titled “Entering the Magical World of Skye,” further enriches the reader’s experience, offering a glimpse into the island’s linguistic heritage.

*The Last Witch on Skye* is a captivating story that will appeal to young readers who enjoy fantasy with a strong sense of place and culture. Nicholson’s skillful blending of magic, folklore, and family dynamics makes this a memorable read, filled with life lessons and delightful adventures.
