The resulting colossal image was stitched together from 600 different fields of view, is made of at least 2.5 billion pixels and took more than a decade to create.<\/p>\n<p>Presented last week at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society and published in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/1538-4357\/ad7e2b\"><em>The Astrophysical Journal<\/em><\/a><\/em>, the new \u201cphotomosaic\u201d also sheds light on our neighboring galaxy\u2019s evolutionary history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of Hubble\u2019s lasting achievements will be how it showed the public the wonders of the universe,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stsci.edu\/stsci-research\/research-directory\/kenneth-sembach\">Kenneth Sembach<\/a>, an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/magazine\/article\/hubble-after-30-years-is-still-revealing-new-mysteries-of-the-universe?utm_source=chatgpt.com&amp;loggedin=true&amp;rnd=1737561556837\"><em>National Geographic<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Daniel Stone in 2020. His remark holds true now, nearly half a decade later.<\/p>\n<p>At 2.5 million light-years away, the <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/hubble\/science\/explore-the-night-sky\/hubble-messier-catalog\/messier-31\/?exclude_child_pages=false&amp;order=ASC&amp;orderby=menu_order&amp;layout=grid&amp;number_of_items=3&amp;requesting_id=29955&amp;science_only=false&amp;show_content_type_tags=no&amp;show_excerpts=yes&amp;show_pagination=true&amp;show_readtime=no&amp;show_thumbnails=yes&amp;response_format=html&amp;listing_page=no&amp;listing_page_category_id=1170&amp;post_types=mission&amp;categories=3608\">Andromeda Galaxy<\/a>\u2014officially called Messier 31\u2014is the farthest object visible to the naked eye. Williams (University of Washington), ESA Standard Licence<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/stsci-opo.org\/STScI-01JGY92V0Z2HJTVH605N4WH9XQ.png\">photographic mosaic<\/a> was achieved thanks to the efforts of two Hubble programs that spanned more than ten years and over 1,000 orbits around Earth. The Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury captured the northern half of the galaxy, while the following Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Southern Treasury imaged the southern half. The final image displays the galaxy tilted at a 77-degree angle relative to how we see it from Earth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Hubble, we can get into enormous detail about what\u2019s happening on a holistic scale across the entire disk of the [Andromeda] galaxy. Williams (U. of Washington), ESA Standard Licence<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In fact, the image could reveal clues about Andromeda\u2019s history, which might include <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/mnras\/article\/475\/2\/2754\/4839413?login=true\">past mergers of galaxies<\/a> and close galactic encounters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAndromeda\u2019s a train wreck. It looks like it has been through some kind of event that caused it to form a lot of stars and then just shut down,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/astro.berkeley.edu\/people\/daniel-weisz\/\">Daniel Weisz<\/a>, an astronomer at the University of California, Berkeley, says in a <a href=\"https:\/\/hubblesite.org\/contents\/news-releases\/2025\/news-2025-005\">statement<\/a> from NASA. \u201cThis was probably due to a collision with another galaxy in the neighborhood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis detailed look at the resolved stars will help us to piece together the galaxy\u2019s past merger and interaction history,\u201d Williams adds.<\/p>\n<p>Hubble, however, has its limits\u2014the space telescope can only detect stars brighter than our sun. In the image of Andromeda, it pinpointed more than 200 million stars\u2014but that\u2019s still much less than the one trillion stars that astronomers suggest make up the galaxy\u2019s stellar population.<\/p>\n<p>Still, observation of Andromeda has come a long way. Roughly 100 years ago, our neighboring spiral galaxy was discovered by American astronomer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Edwin-Hubble\">Edwin Hubble<\/a>. Previously, scientists thought the entire universe existed within the Milky Way, per the NASA statement. But when Andromeda proved to be its very own galaxy, astronomers realized the universe was much, much larger than they\u2019d anticipated.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"video\">\n<div class=\"embedly-plugin\" data-type=\"video\">\n<div class=\"video-image\">\n<p>2.5 Billion Pixel Image of Galaxy Shot by Hubble<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/B2aCFTYiJ4k\/maxresdefault.jpg\" data-video-id=\"B2aCFTYiJ4k\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>  <iframe width=\"854\" src=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" id=\"player\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay\"><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Just like the recent Andromeda news, Edwin Hubble\u2019s discovery was officially announced at an American Astronomical Society meeting, in January 1925. The astronomer, however, had leaked the information to the <em>New York Times<\/em> in November of the previous year, according to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/the-universe\/100-years-ago-edwin-hubble-proved-our-milky-way-galaxy-isnt-alone\">Space.com<\/a><\/em>\u2019s Keith Cooper, so the scientific community\u2014as well as the rest of the world\u2014was already buzzing with excitement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne hundred years is not that far away,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/carnegiescience.edu\/bio\/dr-jeffrey-rich\">Jeff Rich<\/a>, an astronomer at the Carnegie Science Observatories, said during the recent American Astronomical Society meeting, per <em>Space.com<\/em>. \u201cThis is really a lesson of how much things have changed and how discoveries can come at us fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, this photomosaic of Andromeda likely isn\u2019t an ending, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/andromeda-galaxy-the-violent-history-of-our-closest-cosmic-neighbor\/\">start<\/a> of another century of astronomical insight.
