After the death of his grandfather, Noah’s life is thrown into chaos as he faces a repressed past which threatens everything he believes to be true. In the course of trying to come to terms with his loss, Noah must also navigate a difficult relationship with his sister, Kelly, as they reflect on their turbulent childhood – when they were taken from London to live in the Kent countryside following the breakdown of their parents’ marriage.

Set between the 1970s and the more recent past, Adventures About To Begin chronicles a collapsing marriage as experienced by its children and reflects on how memory shapes our decisions at crucial junctures during our lives. It is both funny and touching, as well as a sensitive insight into British family life during a period of great social and cultural change.

I liked it and gave it three stars.

Adventures About to Begin by Allen Therisa is a touching and nostalgic tale that transports readers to the vibrant 1970s, where we join Noah on a journey of self-discovery and family dynamics. The dual timeline structure adds depth to the narrative, allowing us to witness the evolution of relationships over decades.

Noah’s reminiscences of his childhood are filled with authentic sibling interactions and relatable moments, making it easy to connect with his experiences. The portrayal of the 1970s is rich with cultural references, evoking a sense of nostalgia that many readers will appreciate.

Through Noah’s eyes, we explore themes of love, loss, and personal growth, with his exploration of sexuality adding a layer of authenticity to his character. The humorous and heartwarming moments are beautifully woven together, creating a balanced emotional journey.

While the story captures the essence of family bonds, some unresolved aspects may leave readers yearning for more closure. The use of offensive language, though reflecting the era, might be a concern for sensitive readers.

Incorporating an enlightening glossary at the end adds a delightful touch, enhancing the reader’s understanding of the cultural context.

Overall, this read offered me an uplifting exploration of family relationships and a reflection on the lasting impact of the past. If you’re looking for a heartwarming journey that celebrates the ties that bind us, this book is a charming choice.

A special thanks to the author in association with Zooloo’s Book Tours for providing this book in return for an honest review.
