When it comes to veterinary care, precision, reliability, and sustainability are essential. In the United Kingdom, one leading animal hospital and veterinary center had these values significantly enhanced thanks to the adoption of an on-site oxygen generator from Atlas Copco. By replacing bottled oxygen with our advanced OGP2 generator, the hospital has achieved remarkable environmental, cost, and safety benefits.

Transforming Veterinary Practices

Environmental Impact

Previously, the veterinary center relied on four weekly deliveries of bottled oxygen, amounting to 150 truck deliveries per year. This not only contributed to a high carbon footprint but also posed logistical challenges. By switching to an on-site oxygen generator, the hospital has dramatically reduced its carbon emissions, aligning with its strong commitment to sustainability.

Safety Enhancements

The use of bottled oxygen involved significant safety risks. Each bottle weighed around 176lbs, posing a hazard to staff who had to move them around the site. Additionally, deliveries required trucks to access the parking lot, creating potential risks for patients and their owners. The on-site oxygen generator has eradicated these dangers. Staff no longer need to handle heavy bottles, allowing them to focus on essential maintenance tasks without the distraction and risk of moving oxygen supplies.

Reliable and Pure Oxygen Supply

Oxygen purity is crucial in veterinary care, especially in therapy, surgeries, and treatment preparation. The OGP2 oxygen generator from Atlas Copco guarantees a reliable supply of high-purity oxygen 24/7. Using Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology, the generator isolates oxygen molecules from compressed air, ensuring a purity level of up to 97%, exceeding the hospital’s minimum requirement of 90%. This reliable supply ensures that the hospital can maintain the highest standards of care without interruption.

Meeting the Demand Efficiently

The veterinary center uses approximately 33m³ of high-purity oxygen daily. Previously, this demand was met with frequent bottled oxygen deliveries, which were not only costly but also environmentally unsustainable. The OGP2 generator efficiently meets this demand by producing oxygen on-site, filling the storage tank initially, and then remaining on standby until more oxygen is needed. This energy-efficient process supports the hospital’s broader sustainability targets and reduces operational costs.

Future-Proofing Veterinary Care

By ensuring a constant and reliable oxygen supply, the on-site generator has allowed the hospital to increase the number of oxygen cages available, enhancing its capacity to provide care. The facility is no longer reliant on external suppliers, mitigating the risk of supply chain disruptions. This independence is crucial, especially considering the potential vulnerabilities highlighted by recent global events.

Financial Benefits

In addition to the environmental and safety improvements, the on-site generator offers significant cost savings. The hospital estimates that the investment in the OGP2 generator will pay for itself within three years, making it a financially sound decision.

The implementation of Atlas Copco’s on-site oxygen generator has revolutionized operations at this leading veterinary center. By reducing environmental impact, enhancing safety, ensuring a reliable oxygen supply, and offering significant cost savings, the OGP2 generator exemplifies how innovative technology can drive improvements in veterinary care. This case highlights the broader potential benefits for other veterinary practices considering a switch to on-site oxygen generation.
