When Silicon Valley Bank Financial<\/strong><\/a> ($SIVB, SVB) and Signature Bank<\/strong><\/a> collapsed, President Biden and federal regulators vowed to protect all deposits in both banks. Next up, the U.S. Department of Justice and the SEC have launched investigations into SVB\u2019s collapse and insider stock sales shorty before that collapse, The Wall Street Journal reports<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, additional question marks for some startups remain. For instance, SVB lent $6.7 billion to startups in 2022, according to Pitchbook<\/strong><\/a>. The resulting question for those startups, according to Pitchbook: What will happen to the debt they borrowed from the failed bank? The potential answer likely involves another financial services company stepping in to acquire that debt. But so far, a buyer has not emerged as of March 14, 2023.<\/p>\n In the meantime, President Biden on March 13, 2023 essentially said:<\/p>\n All customers are protected and will have access to their money today. <\/p>\n<\/li>\n Taxpayers will not be on the hook for this. (Read between the lines, and fees paid to FDIC will apparently cover the costs to protect SVB customer deposits.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n SVB and Signature Bank executive management will be fired.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Investors (i.e., shareholders) in the two banks will not be protected since investing in publicly held stock involves risk.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n The federal government must get a full accounting of what happened at each bank.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n The U.S. federal government moves are designed to mitigate widespread concern among startups, technology firms, venture capitalists and portions of the banking sector. The federal plan will ensure that SVB\u2019s customers continue to have access to funds held by the bank. Before the federal plan emerged, Ryan Gilbert, founder of venture firm Launchpad Capital<\/strong><\/a>, told CNBC<\/strong><\/a>: \u201cThe number one question is, \u2018How do you make payroll in the next couple days. No one has the answer.\u201d<\/p>\n What went wrong at SVB? The Wall Street Journal<\/strong><\/a> states it simply:<\/p>\n \u201cSVB grew too fast using borrowed short-term money from depositors who could ask to be repaid at any time, and invested it in long-term assets that it was unable, or unwilling, to sell. When interest rates rose quickly, it was saddled with losses that ultimately forced it to try to raise fresh capital, spooking depositors who yanked their funds in two days.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Without the federal plan that is now in place, the following companies and organizations could have taken a serious financial hit:<\/p>\n Before the federal plan emerged, Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen<\/strong> met with\u00a0leaders from the Federal Reserve, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to discuss developments around Silicon Valley Bank. In a statement<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>before the weekend plan emerged, Secretary Yellen \u201cexpressed full confidence in banking regulators to take appropriate actions in response and noted that the banking system remains resilient and regulators have effective tools to address this type of event.\u201d<\/p>\n This is the second largest U.S. bank failure in history<\/strong><\/a>, trailing only Washington Mutual of 2008. Silicon Valley Bank was the 16th largest bank in the United States, with $209 billion in terms of assets under management. Washington Mutual had $307 billion in terms of assets under management when that bank failed in 2008. <\/p>\n Looking ahead, there\u2019s a chance Silicon Valley Bank Financial and the bank\u2019s assets could be acquired<\/strong> by another regional bank sometime this month, Bloomberg Radio is speculating. <\/p>\n Here is a timeline tracking the Silicon Valley Bank closure, and the potential implications for angel investors, technology startups and the venture capital world. <\/p>\n Read from the bottom up. To protect insured depositors, the FDIC created the Deposit Insurance National Bank of Santa Clara (DINB). At the time of closing, the FDIC as receiver immediately transferred to the DINB all insured deposits of Silicon Valley Bank.
