But when is comes to the history from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hoover.org\/research\/america-growth-young-nation-0\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">across<\/span><\/a>\u00a0the pond\u200a\u2014\u200afrom our ancestors who spawned European colonization to these colonies\u200a\u2014\u200awe\u2019re actually relatively youthful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">What we do have, is some of the very first history given to us from the earliest days of William Penn\u2019s Philadelphia. Penn wasn\u2019t just interested in a temporary settlement at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/billofrightsinstitute.org\/essays\/william-penn-and-the-founding-of-pennsylvania\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">the<\/span><\/a>\u00a0convergence of the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers in the 17th century. His metropolis\u200a\u2014\u200awho name was chosen from the roots of Greek mythology\u200a\u2014\u200awas built\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/cities\/2016\/mar\/22\/story-of-cities-7-philadelphia-grid-pennsylvania-william-penn-america-urban-dream\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">to<\/span><\/a>\u00a0last.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">This week, the historic Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral\u200a\u2014\u200alocated in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcwashington.com\/news\/national-international\/paris-notre-dame-reopens-world-leaders-unite\/3786341\/?os=io...lgnfwdermjjc3m0t&amp;ref=app#:~:text=Paris%27%20iconic%20symbol%20of%20French,s%20heart%20from%20beating%20again.\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">the<\/span><\/a>\u00a04th arrondissement on an island in the River Seine in Paris, France\u200a\u2014\u200areopens to the public for the first time in nearly five years. In April of 2019, the Cathedral fell victim to a fire to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/notre-dame-cathedral-reopening-after-fire\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">its<\/span><\/a>\u00a0structure on the roof area including its iconic spire. The resulting damage led to Notre Dame not holding a Christmas Mass for the first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/12\/7\/notre-dame-cathedral-reopens-five-years-after-devastating-blaze\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">year<\/span><\/a>\u00a0since 1803.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The vision of Bishop Maurice de Sully in 1163, Notre Dame Cathedral was finally substantially complete in 1260. Through the centuries, Notre Dame Cathedral was the site of many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/revivre-notre-dame.fr\/en\/the-history-of-notre-dame\/notre-dame-a-jewel-of-french-heritage\/#:~:text=From%20the%20Middle%20Ages%20to%20the%20modern,the%20barbarism%20and%20obscurantism%20of%20previous%20centuries.\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">historic<\/span><\/a>\u00a0events. It saw the signing of the Magnificat which liberated Paris from German control during World War II eighty years ago, saw the funerals of many French Presidents, and even was the site of Emperor Napoleon\u2019s coronation in 1804.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Back home in Philadelphia across the Atlantic Ocean, Philadelphia\u2019s oldest remaining structure\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sah-archipedia.org\/buildings\/DE-01-WL3\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">and<\/span><\/a>\u00a0oldest Church in Pennsylvania was damaged in April 1964 when lighting ignited a fire sixty years ago in Old Swedes (Gloria Dei) Church under Christopher Columbus Blvd. The resulting fire damaged the roof forcing repairs to be made.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Also in 1964\u200a\u2014\u200aSouth Philadelphia\u2019s Third Baptist Church burned to the ground and could not be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thirdbaptistphilly.org\/c\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">saved<\/span><\/a>\u00a0causing $400,000 worth of damage. Within five years, the church was rebuilt and was dedicated in September of 1969. The rebuilt structure kept alive the Third Baptist Church\u00a0which\u00a0had been a South Philadelphia landmark since 1811.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In May of 2021 in Northeast Philadelphia\u200a\u2014\u200aSt. Leo\u2019s Catholic Church in Tacony was burned beyond\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox29.com\/news\/4-teens-charged-in-fire-that-torched-former-st-leos-church-in-tacony-da-says\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">repair<\/span><\/a>. Four suspects were charged in the arson of the church whose original structure\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/item\/pa3913\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">that<\/span><\/a>\u00a0dates between 1885\u20131895. St. Leo\u2019s memories\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/fire-that-destroyed-st-leos-church-in-tacony-was-intentionally-set-20000-reward-offered-atf\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">were<\/span><\/a>\u00a0relegated to its historical time capsules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But what Notre Dame\u2019s five year, $740 million restoration that included some 2,000 architects isn\u2019t\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/91241539\/notre-dame-cathedral-reopens-restoration\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">just<\/span><\/a>\u00a0a financial commitment of epic proportions. It\u2019s paying a homage to the past that won\u2019t let the most historic architecture be demolished when met with modern day disasters. Philadelphia\u200a\u2014\u200aone of America\u2019s oldest cities that still in 2024 contains architecture from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2019\/10\/27\/william-penn-375-years-philadelphia-model-city-street-grid\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">days<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of its founder William Penn\u200a\u2014\u200ashares that same resolve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"><strong><em>The site has been offering a wide variety of high-quality, free history content since 2012.
