A couple of announcements before I begin today\u2019s post \u2013\u00a0<\/p>\n

2. Classroom Course in Value Investing: <\/mark><\/strong>Admission is now open to the February 2025 batch of my most comprehensive classroom course in Value Investing, titled \u2013 Value Investing Blueprint<\/em>. This residential course is scheduled to be held from 27th February to 2nd March 2025 at the campus of Pune-based FLAME University. I recently received a call from a school friend, who, after much convincing had started investing his money through SIPs around two years back. He sounded panicky when we spoke.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe markets are falling, Vishal!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I know,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike you had advised, I have continued my mutual fund investments every month without fail, but I am worried now. Should I stop my monthly investment, or sell them?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen do you need the money you\u2019ve invested?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t need it now,\u201d he replied, \u201cBut I am worried that the markets may fall even further. And I don\u2019t want to see my savings lose more value.\u201d<\/p>\n

I said, \u201cIf you want to take my advice, and if you don\u2019t need the money now, do nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

I tried to tell him that markets continuously test our patience, but more so at these moments when they are falling. But he wasn\u2019t ready to hear it. A day later, he messaged me: \u201cI sold half of my investments, and have stopped my SIPs for now. Will start when things are clearer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ll never be,\u201d I replied in resignation, \u201cBut do what you think is good for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

Markets are a mirror, and a mirror doesn\u2019t lie, or flatter, or care about your feelings. They reflect exactly what you bring to them\u2014your patience or your panic, your discipline or your desperation. Like they didn\u2019t cause my friend\u2019s panic but only revealed it. Markets are like that.<\/p>\n

They show you what\u2019s inside, whether you\u2019re ready to see it or not. When the seas are calm, you can convince yourself you\u2019re patient and level-headed. But when the storm hits\u2014and there\u2019s no storm yet in the markets\u2014the truth comes out.<\/p>\n

As Warren Buffett so famously said, \u201cOnly when the tide goes out do you learn who has been swimming naked.\u201d<\/p>\n

Markets reward patience, discipline, and the ability to stay still when every instinct is screaming, \u201cDo something!\u201d The great irony is that doing nothing is often the hardest thing to do, even though it\u2019s usually the right move.<\/p>\n

Now, the patience I\u2019m talking about is not passive. It\u2019s not about sitting around and hoping things work out. It\u2019s about staying grounded in what you know to be true, which includes the quality of your investments.<\/p>\n

Markets are volatile by nature. Prices will swing wildly, sometimes for no apparent reason. That\u2019s not a failure of the system\u2014it\u2019s the system itself.<\/p>\n

The challenge is learning to wait without letting panic or fear take over.<\/p>\n

When you panic, you lock in losses that could have been temporary.<\/p>\n

When you wait, you give time a chance to work its magic.<\/p>\n

My friend\u2019s story is a familiar one. Most of us, at some point, have felt that gnawing fear that things will never get better. Not to forget that our threshold for pain has come down, and we are easily pained, offended, and unsettled by the smallest disruptions.<\/p>\n

But the key is to remember that panic is a choice, just as patience is.<\/p>\n

Over time, the market can teach you resilience, but only if you\u2019re willing to look at your reflection honestly. It will show you your strengths and your weaknesses. It\u2019s not always a pretty picture, but growth rarely is.<\/p>\n

So, if you are in the same boat as my friend, and are worried about the recent fall in the markets, remember that the market isn\u2019t testing you; it\u2019s showing you who you are.
