Sometimes it seems like I end
\nup at the \u201cright place at the perfect time\u201d an awful lot.<\/span><\/p>\n

But I got to thinking
\nabout it the other night, and I came to this conclusion:<\/span><\/p>\n

It is not that I end up at
\nthe right place at the perfect time any more than other people, it may just be
\nthat I notice<\/u> it more than others.\u00a0
\n<\/span>I have my receptors in tune.\u00a0 <\/span>I have,
\nas I like to think of it, my eyes open and my heart open.\u00a0 <\/span>And when that happens, well, you can find
\nyourself in some amazing situations.<\/span><\/p>\n

The one I want to share
\nwith you now is from Christmas Eve.\u00a0 <\/span>My
\npartner David and I were doing last minute grocery shopping.\u00a0 <\/span>We had been far too busy with the Santa
\nProject to think of what we would eat for the holidays.\u00a0 <\/span>But as the realization that stores would close
\nin just a couple of hours hit, we headed to the grocery.<\/span><\/p>\n

We picked up what we
\nneeded and were checking out.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cDavid, maybe
\nwe should pay for the person in line behind us,\u201d I whispered to him as we were
\nfinishing up.\u00a0 <\/span>After all, it was
\nChristmas Eve.<\/span><\/p>\n

We stalled a bit with our
\nitems while the cashier rang up the woman behind us\u2019 purchases.\u00a0 <\/span>I was all set to pay for her, but something
\njust didn\u2019t feel right<\/i>.\u00a0 <\/span>I couldn\u2019t
\nput my finger on it, but I felt that this was not the time, or it was not the
\nperson.\u00a0 <\/span>Whatever it was, I put the
\ncredit card back in wallet and we turned to go.<\/span><\/p>\n

And that\u2019s when I saw her.<\/span><\/p>\n

One aisle over, waiting
\nfor the cashier to check out her groceries, was an older woman.\u00a0 <\/span>She was wearing shorts on a cold evening,
\nwith leg warmers pulled up to her knees.\u00a0
\n<\/span>And she was shaking.<\/span><\/p>\n

I was not sure if the
\nshakes were from the temperature or a tremor, but she was standing in the grocery
\nstore shaking.<\/span><\/p>\n

I looked at David.\u00a0 <\/span>He looked at me.\u00a0 <\/span>And with twinkles in our eyes, we knew that this
\n<\/i>was right.\u00a0 <\/span>This was the moment.\u00a0 <\/span>This was why the universe had put us in that
\nstore at that time.\u00a0 <\/span>To be kind to her<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

I walked up to her and
\nsaid something like, \u201cExcuse me ma\u2019am.\u00a0 <\/span>It
\nis Christmas Eve.\u00a0 <\/span>Would it be ok if we
\ngave you the gift of paying for your groceries tonight?\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

She looked at me briefly,
\nthen turned back to her wallet.\u00a0 <\/span>The cashier
\nlooked at us.\u00a0 <\/span>I wasn\u2019t sure if the
\nshopper had understood what I said.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cMa\u2019am,
\nwe would like to pay for your groceries tonight.\u00a0 <\/span>Is that alright?\u201d I asked gently. <\/span><\/p>\n

Now she turned to look at
\nus full on.\u00a0 <\/span>Her face looked confused,
\nbut she understood.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWell now, you don\u2019t
\nhave to do that,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOf course we don\u2019t have
\nto<\/i>,\u201d I replied, \u201cBut we want to<\/i>.\u00a0
\n<\/span>It is Christmas Eve.\u00a0 <\/span>We want to
\ngive you a gift.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She accepted the
\ngift.\u00a0 <\/span>We paid.\u00a0 <\/span>The cashier gave us a smile as we helped put
\nthe full bags back in her cart.<\/span><\/p>\n

And that\u2019s when she leaned
\nher skinny little body next to mine and reached out her thin arms.\u00a0 <\/span>She came in for the biggest embrace.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So, there we stood \u2013 two
\nstrangers hugging on Christmas Eve.\u00a0 <\/span>Blocking
\nthe aisle so the person behind her could not proceed.\u00a0 <\/span>But they sensed the need \u2013 they were patient.<\/span><\/p>\n

When our hug ended, I asked,
\n\u201cHow are you getting home?\u00a0 <\/span>Do you have a
\ncar here?\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed she did \u2013 she was parked
\nout in the lot.\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWe\u2019ll walk out with you
\nand help you load up your car,\u201d we told her.<\/span><\/p>\n

And off we went out into
\nthe cold.\u00a0 <\/span>She was a slow walker, but
\nthat was fine with us, we were not in any hurry.\u00a0 <\/span>She lost her car so we had to explore a bit
\nin the lot to find it, but that was ok with us.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Her car was old so she didn\u2019t have a button to push to make it honk to
\nhelp find it, so we walked slowly and hunted.<\/span><\/p>\n

When we found the car, she
\nturned to hug me again, tears in her eyes.\u00a0
\n<\/span>\u201cYou don\u2019t understand,\u201d she said, \u201cI needed<\/u> this.\u00a0 <\/span>You see, I just got diagnosed with cirrhosis
\nof the liver.\u00a0 <\/span>And a blood clot,\u201d she
\nsaid, tears streaming down her face.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

More hugs \u2013 tight, tight
\nhugs.\u00a0 <\/span>Tears.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We helped her load the
\ngroceries into the back seat.\u00a0 <\/span>I couldn\u2019t
\nsee inside, but David later reported that she may have been living in the car.\u00a0 <\/span>He saw blankets and a pillow.\u00a0 <\/span>And when I thought back to what she bought, I
\nthink he may be right.\u00a0 <\/span>She had juices
\nthat do not need to be refrigerated.\u00a0 Snacks of chips and nuts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Tubs of potato salad, pre-made sandwiches, and other things from the deli that did not need to
\nbe cooked.<\/span><\/p>\n

We said goodbye and Merry
\nChristmas and parted ways.<\/span><\/p>\n

I hope she has housing and
\nis not living in her car.<\/span><\/p>\n

I hope that her medical treatments
\nare effective.<\/span><\/p>\n

I hope that the hugs we
\ngave her will help her get through the next few weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n

And I hope that she is in
\nthe perfect place at the perfect time again sometime soon.<\/span><\/p>\n

As for me, I will keep my
\neyes open and my heart open.\u00a0 <\/span>I will continue
\nto talk to strangers, hug them even.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And I will continue to
\nspread kindness.\u00a0 <\/span>One tub of potato salad
\nat a time.<\/span><\/p>\n
