font-size: x-small;\"><br \/>\nColony Collapse Disorder caused the loss of an estimated 40 per cent of honey<br \/>\nbee colonies in the US last year.\u00a0Now researchers have genetically<br \/>\nengineered a bacterium that lives in the gut of honey bees, to boost their<br \/>\nability to fight off pathogens that are often responsible for colony collapse.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #656565;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #656565;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">The researchers from the University of Texas first identified that honey bees<br \/>\ncarry a particular beneficial gut bacterium called\u00a0<em>Snodgrassella alvi<\/em>, and then<br \/>\ngenetically engineered that bacterium to produce RNAi \u2014 RNA interference \u2014 in<br \/>\nthe gut of the bee.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #656565;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #656565;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">That RNAi is then able to suppress the expression of<br \/>\nthe deformed wing virus, and also kills the parasitic Varroa mite.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #656565;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"color: #656565;\">RNA interference [RNAi]\u00a0 is\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color: white; color: #222222;\">a biological process in which RNA molecules inhibit gene expression or translation, by neutralizing targeted mRNA molecules.
