about The Plague<br \/>I always thought it would be a topic better taught to older children <\/p>\n<p>Now as a home educating mummy<br \/>1665 and 1666 London are places we revisit every year<br \/>It is a fascinating time in history<br \/>And there is much to learned from the stories of<br \/>The Great Plague and The Great Fire <\/p>\n<p>When I first heard that one of my favourite authors<br \/>Was writing a novel focused on the fire<br \/>I knew that once again I would learn things about this event<br \/>That I had not heard before <\/p>\n<p>Linday Galvin writes the most amazing magical interpretations<br \/>Of history<br \/>Her stories are thrilling, fast paced page turners<br \/>Filled with facts<br \/>Crammed with carefully crafted characters<br \/>That steal your heart <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chickenhousebooks.com\/books\/the-great-phoenix-of-london\/\">The Great Phoenix Of London<\/a><br \/>Has all the elements we love Lindsay for<br \/>She takes readers to the very heart of the action<br \/>In this case trying to escape the fire of 1666<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" other<br \/>All the dangers of the fire<br \/>With the added complication of protecting<br \/>A bird of myth and fire<br \/>A legendary phoenix \u2026<\/p>\n<p>I absolutely loved this story<br \/>And savoured every one of Lindsay\u2019s words<br \/>Her stories are always so well researched<br \/>And written with passion that sweeps you up<br \/>And makes you feel part of the story<br \/>Part of history with added awe and magic and peril <\/p>\n<p>I have been dreading writing the review<br \/>As I just know that my words will not do this<br \/>Brilliant and beautiful book justice <\/p>\n<p>We meet Gil and his family before the fire<br \/>Before the plague that sadly kills members of his family<br \/>Including his Dad <\/p>\n<p>We meet him again on the night the fire begins<br \/>He is staying with his grandparents<br \/>When the fire begins on their street<br \/>Immediately we are immersed in<br \/>The wooden city of London<br \/>As the fire sparks<br \/>Gil and his grandparents try to help<br \/>Fight the fire<br \/>With old leather buckets<br \/>Before realising the fire is spreading<br \/>Too far<br \/>Too fast<br \/>They join other families in packing up their belongings<br \/>And leaving their homes<br \/>Not before helping to pull down their house<br \/>Sacrificing their home<br \/>To create a fire break<br \/>But it does not work and the fire rages on<br \/>Fear spreads with the flames<br \/>Anger and blame grow<br \/>Gil and his family head for the Thames<br \/>Thinking that sand and water will bring them safety<br \/>But the fire will not be stopped<br \/>The wind blows the sparks<br \/>The dry wood feeds the flames and fuels the fire<br \/>There is panic and chaos as<br \/>More and more of London burns<br \/>In the mayhem Gil is separated from his family<br \/>Left holding a mysterious ball of rock<br \/>That has fallen from the sky<br \/>Left with Jennet<br \/>A brave strong girl tasked with getting Gil to safety <\/p>\n<p>The two children race along the river path<br \/>Sticking and stumbling in the mud<br \/>Before bobbing down the busy river in a barrel<br \/>Gil needs to get to his mother<br \/>Who loves near St Paul\u2019s Cathedral<br \/>He knows that they will find sanctuary inside<br \/>The old stone walls<br \/>But Gil has a problem<br \/>Out of the ball of rock<br \/>A bird of myth and fire has hatched<br \/>A legendary phoenix <\/p>\n<p>Now they are racing to beat the inferno<br \/>While being chased by a man<br \/>Desperate to take the bird from Gil <\/p>\n<p>Linday\u2019s storytelling is so enchanting<br \/>She really does pull you to the heart of the action<br \/>Appealing to all your senses<br \/>I feel that this is an event in history that I know a lot about<br \/>But what Lindsay has done is shown<br \/>How this event affected the people<br \/>The communities<br \/>The businesses involved<br \/>She shows us the humanity in history<br \/>The pain of the plague<br \/>The horror of your grief being attacked by fire<br \/>Losing your home after losing your children<br \/>Sacrificing your home and business<br \/>How unprepared London was to face a fire<br \/>How those in power did not know what to do<br \/>The feeling powerlessness against the forces of nature<br \/>Seeking someone to blame<br \/>Directing anger at people different from you<br \/>The power of love in protecting one another<br \/>The fear of the unknown<br \/>The ability of unlikely alliances to grow<br \/>Into fiercely loyal friendships <\/p>\n<p>Through the story children also learn<br \/>The importance of books and learning<br \/>The power of knowledge<br \/>How those that understood the mythology<br \/>Around the phoenix<br \/>Knew not to be afraid of it<br \/>How those who knew about people<br \/>Knew not to fear others because<br \/>They looked or sounded different to them<\/p>\n<p>I loved how there was so much in this story<br \/>That felt familiar<br \/>Pudding Lane<br \/>The bakery<br \/>The wooden houses too close together<br \/>The fleeing to the river<br \/>The burning of St Paul\u2019s<br \/>Samuel Pepys\u2019s diary<br \/>The controlled explosions to protect the tower<br \/>This story takes you to the heart of<br \/>The Great Fire of London<br \/>Through this historical event<br \/>We think about all the stories we know<br \/>About the history of London<br \/>Where people of the city have needed to work together<br \/>To bring new life and possibilities to the place where they live<\/p>\n<p>The phoenix<br \/>The perfect metaphor<br \/>the strong, majestic and fearless bird<br \/>Rising from the flames<br \/>Just as the city of London rose again<br \/>From the flames of the fire<br \/>In 1666<\/p>\n<p>A symbol of strength, resilience and
