{"id":37389,"date":"2025-01-20T02:33:31","date_gmt":"2025-01-20T02:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/analytics\/gtmtips-consent-granted-reprocesses-previously-denied-hits\/"},"modified":"2025-01-20T02:33:31","modified_gmt":"2025-01-20T02:33:31","slug":"gtmtips-consent-granted-reprocesses-previously-denied-hits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=37389","title":{"rendered":"#GTMTips: Consent Granted Reprocesses Previously Denied Hits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>This will be a quick tip, but it\u2019s here to correct my previous statements in the comments section of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/analytics\/consent-mode-v2-google-tags\/\">different articles<\/a> on this blog.<\/p>\n<p>When using <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/google-ads\/answer\/10000067?hl=en\">Advanced Consent Mode<\/a>, Google Analytics 4 collects hits when consent is in <code>\"denied\"<\/code> state. These hits have a lot of parameters stripped off them, including identifiers like the <strong>Client ID<\/strong> and the <strong>Session ID<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The hits will not surface in reports directly, but they will instead go through a <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/11161109?hl=en\">modeling process<\/a> to enrich the reports once modeled.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, I\u2019ll explain why it\u2019s not necessary to <em>resend<\/em> these hits once consent is granted later on the same page.<\/p>\n<p>I had previously thought that yes, of course you need to resend the hits. Switching previously \u201cconsent-denied\u201d hits to suddenly be \u201cconsent-granted\u201d just because something happened later on the page sounds suspect.<\/p>\n<p>I was wrong. They will appear in your GA4 reports and in your daily BigQuery export as if they had been collected when consent was \u201cgranted\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how I tested it. I collected data from <strong>three users<\/strong>, each sending different events with different timing related to consent state. Here are the results from the BigQuery export:<\/p>\n<div style=\"aspect-ratio: 2116 \/ 688;\" class=\"figure nocaption\">\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2024\/03\/bigquery-consent-report.jpg\" title=\"BigQuery consent report\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fig-img\" height=\"688\" width=\"2116\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.simoahava.com\/images\/2024\/03\/bigquery-consent-report.jpg#ZgotmplZ\" alt=\"BigQuery consent report\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>All of these hits have the <code>user_pseudo_id<\/code> assigned to them. If consent was considered \u201cdenied\u201d, then <code>user_pseudo_id<\/code> should have been <code>null<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>I did check the <strong>intraday<\/strong> tables. In those, the denied hits did indeed have <code>null<\/code> for the values. However, in the daily export (in the screenshot), this is no longer the case. The data has been <em>reprocessed<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The use cases were:<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"d-denied-purchase-u\">d-denied-purchase-u<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Consent was denied<\/li>\n<li><code>page_view<\/code> and <code>first_visit<\/code> were collected<\/li>\n<li><code>purchase<\/code> was collected<\/li>\n<li>Consent was granted<\/li>\n<li><code>user_engagement<\/code> was automatically collected<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Result:<\/strong> All four events were associated with the user with all parameters intact.<\/p>\n<p>GA4 collects a <code>user_engagement<\/code> hit as soon as consent is granted, no doubt to enable this reprocessing in cases where no other hits are sent later.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"d-denied-u-pv\">d-denied-u-pv<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Consent was denied<\/li>\n<li><code>page_view<\/code> and <code>first_visit<\/code> were collected<\/li>\n<li>Consent was granted<\/li>\n<li><code>user_engagement<\/code> was automatically collected<\/li>\n<li><code>page_view<\/code> was manually sent<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Result:<\/strong> All four events were associated with the user with all parameters intact. In other words, the <code>page_view<\/code> info is duplicated for this user.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"d-denied-u\">d-denied-u<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Consent was denied<\/li>\n<li><code>page_view<\/code> and <code>first_visit<\/code> were collected<\/li>\n<li>Consent was granted<\/li>\n<li><code>user_engagement<\/code> was automatically collected<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Result:<\/strong> All three events were associated with the user with all parameters intact.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"summary\">Summary<\/h2>\n<p>This makes Consent Mode setups <strong>so much<\/strong> simpler because you no longer need to re-send hits with potentially important campaign data.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, if those hits happened on <strong>previous page loads<\/strong>, then that information is lost. It\u2019s not possible to persist information from page to page without consent.<\/p>\n<p>Now, whether it\u2019s legally or ethically OK to backstitch data like this is another consideration.<\/p>\n<p>On a simple landing page where it takes time for the user to grant consent, I don\u2019t think there is any problem here. This is information that\u2019s readily available on the page and would have the same content (apart from the timestamp) if collected after the user consented.<\/p>\n<p>On a more complex setup like a single-page app, it\u2019s more nuanced. I haven\u2019t tested whether there is some extra logic in GA4 for only reprocessing hits that occurred within a short time period or on the same <code>page_location<\/code>, but if the reprocessing applies to all hits collected within the same page load then it\u2019s possible data gets collected that the user certainly didn\u2019t consent to.<\/p>\n<p>Let me know in the comments if you have questions about this!<\/p>\n<p>No, I don\u2019t know what happened to the <code>session_start<\/code> event \u2013 it wasn\u2019t in the BigQuery data \u2013\u00a0perhaps it did not get reprocessed the same as the other hits.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This will be a quick tip, but it\u2019s here to correct my previous statements in the comments section of different articles on this blog.
