Naahh...\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/likelincoln.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/should-you-go-to-law-school-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/likelincoln.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/should-you-go-to-law-school.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"\/><\/a>It\u2019s striking to learn that only\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abajournal.com\/news\/article\/law-school_applicants_drop_for_third_year_in_a_row\/\" target=\"_blank\">55,760 people applied to law school this past year<\/a>, while\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usnews.com\/education\/best-graduate-schools\/top-law-schools\/articles\/2011\/03\/18\/law-school-applications-take-a-dip\" target=\"_blank\">83,400 people applied to law school in 2008<\/a>.\u00a0It\u2019s also thought provoking, and worth contemplating: Who are the roughly 27,600 people who would have applied to law school this year if application rates had remained steady? \u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abajournal.com\/news\/article\/law-school_applicants_drop_for_third_year_in_a_row\/\" target=\"_blank\">latest ABA article on application rates<\/a>\u00a0quotes the Dean of Admissions at Georgetown Law in saying: \u201cThat group of people who weren\u2019t as committed just aren\u2019t applying now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Committed to what, exactly? \u00a0Committed to the three-year, $200,000 path of getting a law degree, I suppose. But the 27,600 who may have contemplated and rejected that path may be committed to something else: The freedom to pursue their goals and actually serve society. As law school gets more expensive and as job prospects diminish, the more law school becomes a path toward a kind of indentured servitude \u2013 one where graduates will take and keep ANY job they can get.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder \u2013 and I worry \u2013 whether the people who are turning away from law school are the ones society most needs to be lawyers: People from low income backgrounds. People who are interested in serving low income communities. People who would like to make change in a world that desperately needs it. People with enough foresight and wisdom to recognize that law school could keep them from their goals.<\/p>\n<p>If that\u2019s the case, then we need lawyers \u2013 perhaps 27,600 per year \u2013 to consider taking apprentices, to help people become lawyers via an alternate path. \u00a0We also need states to re-think their rules for bar admission and to revisit the concept of apprenticeships or \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reading_law\" target=\"_blank\">reading the law<\/a>.\u201d \u00a0Currently, California, Washington, Vermont, and Virginia allow people to become lawyers without going to law school.
