From cinematic vistas and atmospheric soundscapes to an empathetic embrace of stillness, beauty, and self-reflection, the albums in this category are especially well suited to do just that. With gratitude to the entire community of musicians that have continued to persevere with their art during discouraging and uncertain times, here is a survey of only some of this year\u2019s most memorable inner journeys.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-28501\"\/><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"36-awakened-souls-the-other-side-of-darkness\">Abul Mogard &amp; Rafael Anton Irisarri \u2013 Impossibly distant, impossibly close<\/h2>\n<p align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"460\" height=\"460\" style=\"position: relative; display: block; width: 460px; height: 460px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/v=2\/track=420287314\/album=2141230429\/size=large\/bgcol=333333\/linkcol=ffffff\/tracklist=false\/\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Info: <a href=\"https:\/\/abulmogard.bandcamp.com\/album\/impossibly-distant-impossibly-close\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Abul Mogard Bandcamp<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/irisarri.bandcamp.com\/album\/impossibly-distant-impossibly-close\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rafael Anton Irisarri Bandcamp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While\u00a0<strong>Abul Mogard<\/strong>\u00a0(the alter ego of Guido Zen) and\u00a0<strong>Rafael Anton Irisarri<\/strong>\u00a0each create music that is often labeled as ambient, anyone familiar with their work would likely agree that they do not necessarily comply with Eno\u2019s oft repeated hypothesis that it \u201cmust be as ignorable as it is interesting\u201d. In their own distinctive ways, these two artists create stunning compositional soundscapes that command the attention of their listeners by mastering a vast sonic range and exhibiting tremendous thematic and emotional heft. Until recently, however, the two had not collaborated with one another, but after being brought together for a sold-out performance to open the SoundSet Series in Madrid last year, a \u201ccreative spark\u201d was lit that resulted in this album\u00a0which features a pair of magnificent long form sonic excursions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong><em>Impossibly distant, impossibly close <\/em><\/strong>was released April 26, 2024, in three limited vinyl LP editions (yellow, green, and black) and features artwork by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/marja.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Marja de Sanctis<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"36-awakened-souls-the-other-side-of-darkness\">Alaskan Tapes \u2013 Something Ephemeral<\/h2>\n<p align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"460\" height=\"460\" style=\"position: relative; display: block; width: 460px; height: 460px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/v=2\/track=3957319398\/album=2841944864\/size=large\/bgcol=333333\/linkcol=ffffff\/tracklist=false\/\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Info: <a href=\"https:\/\/alaskantapes.bandcamp.com\/album\/something-ephemeral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/alaskantapes.bandcamp.com\/album\/something-ephemeral<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another ambient gem from Brady Kendall\u2019s <strong>Alaskan Tapes<\/strong> project. Featuring delicate synth layers, acoustic guitar, and notably cello on the closing the track, the music is consistent with the organic introspective approach that graced his previous albums albeit with a deliberately simplified approach. Another nice touch is the introduction of collaborations which surface on some of the tracks with contributions from Moshimoss and Andrew Tasselmyer. Just an easy album to settle into. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Whenever I write songs, I like the mystery and surprise of what people will take away from them. At the same time, I just want listeners to enjoy it. I hope it\u2019s calming and peaceful, which is what ambient music should be. When Daniel Field reached out to Brad about creating something for his Imaginary North label, he challenged him to do so using an approach or instrument he hadn\u2019t used before. The listener is immersed right from the off in tape saturated verdure that grows out of the seamless blending of their distinctive stylistic approaches. Recorded at studios in their respective locations of Brooklyn (Meluch) and Denver (Corder) the album is a lush, diaphanous weave of electric and acoustic guitar, voice, microcassette tape, field recordings, modular synth, strings and flute that aches with melancholy and organic beauty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong><em>Sunder <\/em><\/strong>was released January 22, 2024, in both limited CD and vinyl LP editions by the Laaps imprint and features artwork by\u00a0Meluch himself. <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"enrico-coniglio-alpine-variations\">Chihei Hatakeyama, Hakobune, zak\u00e8, From Overseas \u2013 Live Improvisations<\/h2>\n<p align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"460\" height=\"460\" style=\"position: relative; display: block; width: 460px; height: 460px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/v=2\/track=797461415\/album=3448036510\/size=large\/bgcol=333333\/linkcol=ffffff\/tracklist=false\/\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Info: <a href=\"https:\/\/zakedrone.bandcamp.com\/album\/live-improvisations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/zakedrone.bandcamp.com\/album\/live-improvisations<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This pair of live collaborations between two very compatible artist duets begins with what must be considered nothing less than found treasure for ambient music enthusiasts. It starts off with a recently unearthed 2014 performance by\u00a0<strong>Chihei Hatakeyama\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Hakobune<\/strong> \u2013 a tender and patient exploration of sonic space by two acknowledged masters of ambient guitar. The B side of the album offers up a performance by\u00a0<strong>zak\u00e8<\/strong>\u00a0and frequent collaborator\u00a0<strong>K\u00e9vin S\u00e9ry<\/strong>, aka\u00a0<strong>From Overseas<\/strong>, which responds in kind, an efflorescent homage to the spirit of the newly discovered work of two legends of the scene from two artists very much on its vanguard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-regular-font-size\"><strong><em>Live Improvisations<\/em><\/strong> was released January 1, 2024, on CD, digital, and a pair of limited vinyl LP editions (\u2018fuschia rose\u2019 and black) by Zak\u00e8 Drone Recordings. <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"federico-mosconi-dreamers-and-tides\">Civic Hall \u2013 The Trembling Line<\/h2>\n<p align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"460\" height=\"460\" style=\"position: relative; display: block; width: 460px; height: 460px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/v=2\/track=1341023134\/album=632473822\/size=large\/bgcol=333333\/linkcol=ffffff\/tracklist=false\/\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Info: <a href=\"https:\/\/thehumblebee.bandcamp.com\/album\/the-trembling-line\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/thehumblebee.bandcamp.com\/album\/the-trembling-line<\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can count on the highly eclectic Lost Tribe Sound label to bowl you over at least a few times every year with albums that are often as intricate and beautiful as they are ambitious and inventive. A case in point is the debut of Civic Hall, a new project that brings together <strong>Craig Tattersall <\/strong>and <strong>Euan Millar-McMeeken<\/strong> best known as <strong>The Humble Bee<\/strong> and <strong>Glacis<\/strong> respectively though they both have recorded under a number of other aliases. <strong><em>The Trembling Line<\/em><\/strong> is delicate affair that smolders with deeply felt emotional undercurrent arising from Millar-McMeeken\u2019s melancholic piano lines and whispered vocals while the fragility of Tattersall\u2019s tape-saturated sounds adds a quiet intensity all its own. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>To this day,\u00a0it\u2019s hard to verbalize what makes an album speak to us or feel right for the label. The liner notes remind us that the title by definition evokes \u201csomething rural, rustic, or pastoral, especially suggesting simple, innocent contentment\u201d and Cottone is more than capable of conjuring sounds that do just that. It is the second outing for the duo on the label with the first being <strong><em>All Other Voices Gone, Only Yours Remains<\/em><\/strong> in 2019 not to mention the lovely <strong><em>We Were the Hum of Dreams<\/em><\/strong> which appeared in 2020 on sister label Laaps. Ian and Brad do mix things up a bit from album to album and on <strong><em>Half-Light<\/em><\/strong> they pivot from the comparatively bright and bucolic mood of 2022\u2019s <strong><em>Woven Songs<\/em><\/strong> to something more ruminative and crepuscular.
