{"id":364063,"date":"2026-08-02T19:28:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-02T19:28:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/american-history\/chicago-history-museum-unveils-third-us-at-250-civic-action-in-chicago-installation\/"},"modified":"2026-08-02T19:28:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T19:28:16","slug":"chicago-history-museum-unveils-third-us-at-250-civic-action-in-chicago-installation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=364063","title":{"rendered":"Chicago History Museum Unveils Third &#8220;US at 250: Civic Action in Chicago&#8221; Installation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><em>Barrett Keithley\u2019s \u201cThe People, We Are: A Living Reflection on the U.S. Constitution\u201d now open to the public<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">CHICAGO (July\u00a021, 2026)<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2013\u00a0As part of its\u00a0\u201cUS at 250: Civic Action in Chicago\u201d\u00a0initiative, the Chicago History Museum\u00a0unveiled the third of four rotating\u00a0contemporary art installations responding\u00a0to four important documents from U.S. history in\u00a0the Museum\u2019s collection: the Declaration of Independence, Northwest Ordinance, U.S. Constitution, and the Thirteenth Amendment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The work is\u00a0on view\u00a0in the Museum\u2019s first-floor lobby\u00a0through October 2026.\u00a0\u201cThe People, We Are: A Living Reflection on the U.S. Constitution\u201d\u00a0by\u00a0Barrett Keithley,\u00a0a\u00a0local\u00a0multi-disciplinary artist, cultural strategist, and creative entrepreneur,\u00a0is\u00a0a mixed-media mural\u00a0that visually and emotionally explores the impact of the U.S. Constitution and\u00a0invites visitors to reflect on the living document that continues to shape and be shaped by the people it serves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAt a time when our constitution is being tested,\u00a0it is vital that we\u00a0consider\u00a0its history and future together,\u201d said Chicago History Museum Curator of Civic\u00a0Engagement\u00a0and Social Justice Elena Gonzales.\u00a0\u201cKeithley\u2019s piece invites us to commit to building justice and freedom for everyone by\u00a0supporting our democracy, and to think creatively about how we can each do that in our own lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cUS at 250\u201d\u00a0is anchored\u00a0in the Chicago History Museum\u2019s collection materials relating to the United States\u2019 founding and Chicago\u2019s civic legacies.\u00a0The\u00a0project\u00a0centers the city as a place of participatory action and the Museum as a space\u00a0for making connections between past, present, and\u00a0future.\u00a0It\u00a0highlights stories of people coming together to fight for equality, inclusion,\u00a0and a voice in decisions that affect their lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As part of the \u201cUS at 250\u201d initiative, the purpose of these art installations is to explore the ongoing work of democracy throughout the nation\u2019s complex history through letterpress prints, murals, altar monuments, and interactive experiences. Each work is on display in the Museum\u2019s lobby for three months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The first\u00a0installation,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagohistory.org\/exhibition\/us-at-250-vida-sacic\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cSelf-Evident: A Letterpress Exploration of the Declaration of Independence,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0on view from January\u00a0to\u00a0March 2026, featured artist\u00a0Vida Sa\u010di\u0107, whose work\u00a0explored the language and legacy of the nation\u2019s founding ideals, inviting visitors to consider how the promises of the Declaration of Independence continue to resonate and be contested today.\u00a0From April to\u00a0June 2026, artists Carlos Flores and Deon Reed presented\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagohistory.org\/exhibition\/us-at-250-carlos-flores-deon-reed\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cPorta(til),\u201d<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a collaborative installation inspired by the Northwest Ordinance. Their work highlighted\u00a0the Northwest Ordinance\u2019s promises of freedom for formerly enslaved African Americans and land rights for Indigenous peoples, and reimagined\u00a0its expansionist legacy through participatory, community-driven\u00a0action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Following Barret Keithley,\u00a0the\u00a0final installation\u00a0from\u00a0Dorian Sylvain, a local artist from the\u00a0Bronzeville\u00a0area, responding to the Thirteenth Amendment, will debut in October 2026, completing\u00a0the four-part artistic exploration of America\u2019s founding documents and how they connect with Chicago\u2019s long history of civic action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition to the\u00a0responses\u00a0by local artists, the broader \u201cUS at 250: Civic Action in Chicago\u201d\u00a0initiative\u00a0includes updated stories and objects in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagohistory.org\/exhibition\/facing-freedom\/\">\u201cFacing Freedom\u201d<\/a>\u00a0exhibition, which\u00a0reopened July 4, public and community engagement within and outside the Museum\u2019s walls, Civic Circle discussions for teens and young adults, resources for grades 6\u201312 students and teachers, and conservation work and an\u00a0exhibition, \u201cThreads of a Nation: Preserving Presidential Clothing,\u201d\u00a0on historical clothing worn by some of the nation\u2019s founders,\u00a0opening in October 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For more information about\u00a0\u201cUS at 250: Civic Action in Chicago\u201d\u00a0visit\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagohistory.org\/us-at-250-civic-action-in-chicago\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">chicagohistory.org\/us-at-250-civic-action-in-chicago<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0or contact Emily Miller, Public Communications Manager, at emily.miller@chicagohistory.org or (312) 799-2161.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">###<\/p>\n<p><strong>ABOUT THE CHICAGO HISTORY MUSEUM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Chicago History Museum is situated on ancestral homelands of the Potawatomi people, who cared for the land until forced out by non-Native settlers.
