The anatomist had prepared the donated bodies through his own technique, \u201cplastination.\u201d He\u2019d switched their natural fluids for resins and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csidesigns.com\/blog\/articles\/elastomers-a-beginners-guide?srsltid=AfmBOoq83zch4f4H9KB4cFmGLPVWncVY0v_mdT8wSPsBehYXx2Va7KT2\">elastomers<\/a>. For this, von Hagens earned the moniker \u201cDoctor Death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Von Hagens died in July of a cerebral hemorrhage, after living for years with Parkinson\u2019s disease, reports the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2026\/jul\/30\/gunther-von-hagens-obituary#:~:text=The%20German%20anatomist%20Gunther%20von,whenever%20and%20wherever%20it%20toured\"><em>Guardian<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Mick O\u2019Hare. He was 81. At von Hagens\u2019 request, his own body will be plastinated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGunther wanted to give people the opportunity to look beneath the skin\u2014not out of sensationalism, but from the deep conviction that knowledge of one\u2019s own body can contribute to a more conscious, healthier, responsible life,\u201d says von Hagens\u2019 wife, curator and physician <a href=\"https:\/\/bodyworlds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Bio_Angelina_Whalley_BODY_WORLDS_EN.pdf\">Angelina Whalley<\/a>, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/bodyworlds.com\/gunthervonhagens\/\">statement<\/a> from \u201cBODY WORLDS.\u201d \u201cHis work was scientific, educational and deeply humanistic. In 1970, he migrated to West Germany and continued his studies. As an anatomical assistant at the University of Heidelberg, von Hagens observed specimens preserved inside blocks of clear plastic, and he asked the curator whether the process could be flipped: Why not put the plastic inside the specimen?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018You are an idiot. You cannot do it,\u2019\u201d von Hagens <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bL2bsLR6Hhg\">recalled<\/a> on BBC\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b009hr55\">Friday Night With Jonathan Ross<\/a>\u201d in 2008. \u201cAnd this boggled my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By 1977, von Hagens had created his first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plastinarium.de\/en\/plastination-guben\/development\/\">plastinated specimen<\/a>: a kidney. According to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bodyworlds.com\/about\/developments\/\">BODY WORLDS<\/a>,\u201d he realized he\u2019d begun his life\u2019s work. Then, the body is dissected, removing skin, fatty and connective tissues. It is then soaked in an acetone bath, which gets rid of water and soluble fats. As von Hagens said on \u201cJonathan Ross,\u201d \u201cWithout water, no decay.\u201d Next, the body is placed in a bath of liquid polymer, like silicone rubber, polyester or epoxy resin. The acetone vaporizes, creating a vacuum, and polymer fills in all the microscopic gaps. Finally, the body is cured. The exhibition began touring the world, attracting visitors and prompting critiques. In the early 2000s, for example, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/28\/science\/gunther-von-hagens-dead.html\">rabbi<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2026\/jul\/30\/gunther-von-hagens-obituary#:~:text=The%20German%20anatomist%20Gunther%20von,whenever%20and%20wherever%20it%20toured.\">novelist<\/a> compared von Hagens\u2019 work to Nazi crimes, while a reverend said he \u201cplays with the corpses like a child plays with dolls,\u201d per the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/anatomist-gunther-von-hagens-body-worlds-dead-bb870217b426e61e351e60e6726c885e\">Associated Press<\/a>\u2019 Geir Moulson.<\/p>\n<p>An anatomist \u201cis forced in his daily work to reject the taboos and convictions that people have about death and the dead,\u201d von Hagens countered, per the AP. \u201cI touch here a taboo, which is our body, and nothing is so near as our body is to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/SBUx_BNYZqsWNiXQR1ChnffyTAk=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(2554x1715:2555x1716)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/23\/c7\/23c7dbb0-1ca8-409c-80c0-b655e7a26b58\/dr_gunther_von_hagens_and_dr_angelina_whalley_working_on_a_plastinate.jpeg\" alt=\"couple\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      Von Hagens and Whalley work on a plastinate.<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9 Gunther von Hagens\u2019 BODY WORLDS, Institute for Plastination, Heidelberg, Germany, www.bodyworlds.com<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Still, the traveling exhibition was\u2014and remains\u2014wildly popular. Its organizers report that more than <a href=\"https:\/\/bodyworlds.com\/about\/developments\/\">58 million people<\/a> have gone to see it, in 42 different countries spanning six continents. There are permanent <a href=\"https:\/\/bodyworlds.com\/exhibitions\/\">installations<\/a> in California, Germany and the Netherlands, and this year, it\u2019s showing temporarily in <a href=\"https:\/\/bodyworlds.com\/city\/melbourne\/\">Melbourne<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bodyworlds.com\/city\/sydney\/\">Sydney<\/a> inAustralia.<\/p>\n<p>Von Hagens attributed the appeal of \u201cBODY WORLDS\u201d to humans\u2019 curiosity about themselves. \u201cBefore the exhibitions, when I used to give lectures, I noticed that the cleaning lady and the doorman were more interested than my colleagues,\u201d he told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2004-jun-26-et-museum26-story.html\"><em>Los Angeles Times<\/em><\/a>\u2019 Diane Haithman in 2004. \u201cThat is what makes plastination different\u2014they start to identify with the specimens.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"video\">\n<div class=\"embedly-plugin\" data-type=\"video\">\n<div class=\"video-image\">\n<p>Gunther von Hagens Friday Night with Jonathan Ross<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/189SqsHp4T8HYtvjlfKsFeGp2NA=\/1072x603\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/embedly\/Screenshot_2026-07-31_3.45.35_PM.png\" data-video-id=\"bL2bsLR6Hhg\" alt=\"Gunther von Hagens Friday Night with Jonathan Ross\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>  <iframe width=\"854\" src=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" id=\"player\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay\" title=\"Gunther von Hagens Friday Night with Jonathan Ross\"><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Fans lauded von Hagens\u2019 apparent appreciation of the human physique. As the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/28\/science\/gunther-von-hagens-dead.html\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>\u2019 Edward Rothstein wrote in a 2013 review, \u201cYou are actually seeing the forces of life on display in this dead matter, and those forces are extraordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"insight\">\n<div>\n<p class=\"h4-style\">Did you know? Ancient embalming<\/p>\n<p>    In ancient Egypt, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/spotlight\/ancient-egypt\/mummies\">mummification<\/a> took about 70 days. Priests removed internal organs from the body, then used natron salt to remove moisture, then wrapped bodies in layers of linen and warm resin.\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Some 22,000 people have registered to donate their body to von Hagens\u2019 program\u2014most of them German\u2014according to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bodyworlds.com\/about\/developments\/\">BODY WORLDS<\/a>.\u201d Von Hagens\u2019 own body is only the latest contribution to plastination, a discipline now practiced in some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plastinarium.de\/en\/plastination-guben\/development\/\">400 laboratories<\/a> around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father never accepted that boundaries were fixed,\u201d says von Hagens\u2019 son, Rurik, in the statement. \u201cHe brought anatomy out of the closed world of specialists and into society.
