every day, everywhere
we stand in a house of loss <\/p>
residing under a shelter of pain <\/p>
of grief <\/p>
of heartbreak <\/p>
of shame <\/p>
in the (dis)comforts of one\u2019s tears <\/p>
that glide down a face, <\/p>
carved so carefully <\/p>
by the gods and goddesses of sorrow themselves <\/p>
these tears fall on tiled floors, <\/p>
the footprints of the past still visible \u2013 <\/p>
like paw prints engraved in wet cement. <\/p>
in cupboards creaking, <\/p>
the crevices of golden brushed wood emanate fabric scents <\/p>
some sweat-lingered, still unwashed <\/p>
it is too soon \u2013 <\/p>
a whiff of memory that is old, special, and familiar <\/p>
to be replaced by a fragrance soapy, fresh, new. <\/p>
it is too soon, it can wait. <\/p>
by the window, <\/p>
a visit by feline friends awaiting their companion \u2013 <\/p>
a homebody; shy and lazy, and uniquely mischievous <\/p>
through sun-tinted window cracks, <\/p>
the insides of this house reveal <\/p>
toys, trees, food and water bowls empty \u2013 <\/p>
an absence that fills the living room. <\/p>
couches and pillows dusted with calico hair \u2013 <\/p>
a pillow cover of its own, one that is woven with remnants of a lost love <\/p>
these feline friends leave with questions perhaps unanswered \u2013 <\/p>
their final visit marked. <\/p>
silhouettes in circular mirrors, two anchored to the bedroom walls <\/p>
the stare of a numb, yet indifferent guise, <\/p>
with ears adorned but, <\/p>
by an incomplete pairing \u2013 <\/p>
with one hole naked, from the other hangs an earring; diamond-shaped, a mirror attached. <\/p>
sun rays bounce off mirrored surfaces, <\/p>
the trials and tribulations of finding the lost earring permeate through a hole <\/p>
in the heart of the figure who has lost. <\/p>
this \u2018lost\u2019 earring is, perhaps <\/p>
buried under the rubble of dismantled shelves \u2013 <\/p>
a clutter, uncleaned with flying dust. <\/p>
the presence of safety once felt remains broken by bedroom corners. <\/p>
yet, to escape from these enclosures of painful memory is a change <\/p>
too difficult \u2013 <\/p>
there is an unexplained, strange comfort in this chaos. <\/p>
the kitchen walls show framed illustrations of food \u2013 <\/p>
always cooked with love and care. <\/p>
the lit stove fires remember and remind \u2013 <\/p>
the souls of happiness that put together recipes of <\/p>
warmth and delight. <\/p>
the cabinets converse with fridge magnets. <\/p>
tired of unfinished meals delivered, <\/p>
they remain witness to the gradual <\/p>
deterioration of pans and pots \u2013 <\/p>
once carrying purpose, now engulfed in mahogany dust. <\/p>
adjacent, <\/p>
floral-draped shower curtains conceal a waterlogged bathtub. <\/p>
drains clogged by falling hair, <\/p>
the water marbled. <\/p>
stagnant like the days, <\/p>
the water is symbolic of unpleasantries <\/p>
too weighty to let go of. <\/p>
this washroom, <\/p>
ivory-tiled and lavender\u2013scented, <\/p>
completes the house of loss. <\/p>
its pillars hold the weight of change <\/p>
of hurt, of isolation <\/p>
this house of loss envelops all, <\/p>
in the heaviest of moments <\/p>
and the lightest <\/p>
it carries memories <\/p>
and feelings <\/p>
and souls <\/p>
embodied by mere tangibles \u2013 <\/p>
no more does this feel like a home, <\/p>
but a house that is collectively resided in \u2013 <\/p>
an emotion \u2013 universal \u2013 that brings together \u2018residents\u2019 of a feeling so disorienting <\/p>
a feeling which, <\/p>
placed under sheltering ceilings, <\/p>
still promises\u202fhealing. <\/p><\/pre>\n
In\u00a0anthropology,\u00a0the\u00a0house\u00a0is never just\u00a0a\u00a0shelter. It is memory made spatial,\u00a0the\u00a0domestic as archive where presence lingers.\u00a0Time lives in objects, like\u00a0the\u00a0scent of unwashed fabric, in hair left on a pillow, or a missing earring.\u00a0The\u00a0house\u00a0of\u00a0loss moves through a house, room by room, tracing\u00a0the\u00a0material residue of grief and\u00a0the\u00a0way past and present coexist\u00a0rather uncomfortably\u00a0after a loss. It sits with\u00a0the\u00a0kind of inheritance that lingers, and is too painful to wash away, for grief to lift, for time to move, and for what\u00a0remains\u00a0to simply be.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
