There\u2019s\u00a0a sentence I hear constantly, and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0almost always\u00a0said with real frustration:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u00a0knows\u00a0better. He\u2019s\u00a0just being\u00a0stubborn.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He\u00a0doesn\u2019t, and he\u00a0isn\u2019t. And\u00a0as long as\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0the explanation\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0working from, the pulling will never stop \u2014 because\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0solving the wrong problem.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The reframe<\/h2>\n

Your dog pulls on the leash for exactly one reason:\u00a0<\/span>it has worked every single time he has ever tried it.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Think about it from\u00a0his\u00a0end of the leash. He wants to reach the mailbox. He pulls. You take a step. He gets closer to the mailbox. He pulls harder. You take more steps. He arrives at the mailbox.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From his perspective,\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0a system with a 100% success rate over his entire life. He would be irrational to abandon it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He is not defying you. He is not dominating you. He is\u00a0not being\u00a0stubborn. He is doing the thing that works, which is what every animal on earth does, including you.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The one rule<\/h2>\n

If pulling is a behavior that works, the fix is to make it stop working.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pulling never, ever moves you forward.<\/h2>\n

That\u2019s\u00a0the whole rule. The instant the leash goes tight, you stop moving. Not a correction. Not a yank. Not a word. You simply become a tree. The moment there is slack in the leash again \u2014 even for half a second \u2014 you walk.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tight leash: the world freezes. Loose leash: the world happens.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You are not punishing your dog. You are giving him information he has never had before, and you are giving it to him with perfect consistency, which is the only way information gets through.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Yes, the first walks are terrible<\/h2>\n

I want to be honest with you about\u00a0this, because\u00a0most articles skip it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Your first few sessions will be absurd. You will spend fifteen minutes traveling forty feet down your own street. You will stop and start so many times\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0feel ridiculous. A neighbor will drive\u00a0past\u00a0and\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0want to explain yourself.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Do it anyway. Do it in your driveway if you\u00a0have to\u00a0\u2014 this stage\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0about getting anywhere.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Then, usually somewhere in the first week, something clicks. It clicks fast, and it clicks hard, because\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0finally made the two options unmistakable. Dogs are excellent at figuring out contingencies.\u00a0They\u2019re\u00a0terrible at figuring out inconsistent ones.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Which is the real reason most people fail at this: they hold the line for four days and then let the dog drag them across the street on day five because\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0running late. One inconsistent session\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0cost you a day. It\u00a0teaches\u00a0your dog that pulling works\u00a0<\/span>sometimes<\/span><\/i>, and intermittent rewards are the most durable kind there is. Ask anyone who plays slot machines.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Three things that make it stick<\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Pay the position, not the absence of the problem. <\/span><\/b>Most owners only engage with the leash when it\u2019s tight. Flip that. When your dog is walking near you with a loose leash, mark it and pay it \u2014 a treat, a \u201cyes,\u201d a quick scratch. Loose leash has to become the thing that\u00a0<\/span>earns<\/span><\/i>\u00a0something, not just the thing that\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0punished.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Stop using the walk to burn energy. <\/span><\/b>A dog who\u2019s been alone all day, released from a crate, and hauled straight out the front door is not in a learning state. He\u2019s in an explosion state. Two minutes of sniff work, a few sits, a little food scattered in the grass after the leash goes on \u2014 take the top off first, then train.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Fix your gear. <\/span><\/b>A flat collar hands a determined dog leverage against you and puts pressure directly on his trachea. A well-fitted front-clip harness redirects his forward momentum sideways instead of letting him pull straight through. To be clear: gear is not training. It doesn\u2019t teach your dog anything. But it makes training physically possible while you\u2019re both learning, and it protects his throat in the meantime.<\/span>

If your dog is lunging, barking, growling, or\u00a0fixating on\u00a0other dogs or people while on leash, that\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0pulling \u2014 that\u2019s reactivity.
