class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cA woman named Martha<br \/>welcomed Him into her house.\u201d<\/em><br \/>(Luke 10:38)<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-2076\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The story begins<br \/>with hospitality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not rebellion.<br \/>Nor carelessness.<br \/>Not sin in the obvious sense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just a woman<br \/>trying to honor Jesus well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Jewish world of the first century,<br \/>hospitality was sacred.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Receiving a guest, especially a rabbi,<br \/>meant more than opening a door.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meals had to be prepared.<br \/>Water provided.<br \/>Space arranged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Honor was expressed<br \/>through service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Martha served.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her sister Mary<br \/>Choose a different posture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scripture says:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cShe sat at the Lord\u2019s feet<br \/>and listened to His teaching.\u201d<\/em><br \/>(Luke 10:39)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That detail matters deeply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To sit at a rabbi\u2019s feet<br \/>was the posture of a disciple.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It meant submission.<br \/>Learning.<br \/>Devotion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary was not merely sitting nearby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She was positioning herself<br \/>to receive from Him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Jesus did not correct her for it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tension in the story<br \/>does not come from Martha\u2019s work itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It comes from what the work<br \/>slowly began to do within her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luke writes:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cMartha was distracted<br \/>with much serving.\u201d<\/em><br \/>(Luke 10:40)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Distracted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pulled apart internally.<br \/>Drawn in different directions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What began as devotion<br \/>slowly became unrest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Responsibilities multiplied.<br \/>Attention fractured.<br \/>And somewhere beneath the serving,<br \/>Anxiety quietly took root.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, her frustration spilled outward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only toward Mary<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">but toward Jesus Himself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cLord, do You not care<br \/>that my sister has left me<br \/>to serve alone?\u201d<\/em><br \/>(Luke 10:40)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That question reveals the deeper issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martha was doing many good things,<br \/>yet she felt unseen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unhelped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps even unappreciated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When service becomes tied<br \/>to our sense of worth,<br \/>resentment is never far behind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What began as hospitality<br \/>ended in complaint.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus answers her gently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not with rebuke.<br \/>Not with shame.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just tenderness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cMartha, Martha,<br \/>you are anxious and troubled<br \/>about many things.\u201d<\/em><br \/>(Luke 10:41)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The repetition of her name<br \/>sounds like affection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is not rejecting her service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is diagnosing her heart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then He says:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cBut one thing is necessary.<br \/>Mary has chosen the good portion,<br \/>which will not be taken away from her.\u201d<\/em><br \/>(Luke 10:42)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One thing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not many things.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Necessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus was not saying<br \/>that serving is unimportant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scripture never condemns faithful work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, later in the Gospel of John,<br \/>Martha makes one of the clearest declarations of faith in all Scripture:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cYes, Lord;<br \/>I believe that You are the Christ,<br \/>the Son of God,<br \/>who is coming into the world.\u201d<\/em><br \/>(John 11:27)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in John 12,<br \/>after Lazarus is raised from the dead,<br \/>Martha serves again<br \/>(John 12:2).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But something feels different now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No complaint, comparison.<br \/>No anxious striving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because service flowing from intimacy<br \/>feels different<br \/>from service flowing from pressure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps<br \/>That is the real lesson of Martha.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue was never her temperament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was her priority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Churches need Marthas.<br \/>Families depend on Marthas.<br \/>Ministries are sustained by Marthas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When activity becomes<br \/>the place we seek identity,<br \/>validation, or control,<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">even good work<br \/>can slowly distance us from rest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martha was not distracted by sin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She was distracted by responsibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes,<br \/>That is the more subtle danger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because it is possible<br \/>to become so busy serving Jesus<br \/>that we stop sitting with Him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even Christ Himself<br \/>modeled another way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again and again in the Gospels,<br \/>Jesus withdrew to pray<br \/>(Mark 1:35; Luke 5:16).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crowds pressed on Him.<br \/>Needs surrounded Him.<br \/>Yet urgency never replaced<br \/>communion with the Father.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Him, we see<br \/>that activity must flow from a relationship,<br \/>not replace it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the question still reaches us now:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are we busy for Christ?<br \/>Or are we truly with Him?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are our actions rooted in peace,<br \/>Or driven by anxiety?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have many good things<br \/>crowd out<br \/>The one necessary thing?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the invitation<br \/>has never changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before we rise to serve,<br \/>We must first learn<br \/>to sit at His feet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only there<br \/>not in accomplishment,<br \/>not in recognition,<br \/>not in endless activity, the restless heart<br \/>Finally, find
