A Book Of
\nNoises: Notes on the Auraculous \u2013 Caspar Henderson (2023)<\/span><\/u><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Around eight years ago,
\nI read and reviewed a very cool book titled <\/span>\u201cThe Book of Barely Imagined Beings<\/span><\/i>\u201d,
\nby Caspar Henderson<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 <\/span>Mr. Henderson explored the world
\nof animals via the conceit of a bestiary where each chapter coincided with a
\nletter of the alphabet, and an animal whose name begins with said letter.\u00a0 <\/span>It is an amazing book and one that opens the
\nmind to the infinite variety found in the natural world around us.\u00a0 <\/span>Having dipped my toes into the mind of Caspar
\nHenderson, I was very happy to find A Book of Noises<\/i> while browsing the
\nlibrary shelves.\u00a0 <\/span>This wonderful book
\nexplores the vast landscape of sound, divided into chapters with titles such as
\nCosmophony: Sounds of Space<\/i>, Geophony: Sounds of Earth<\/i>, Biophony:
\nSounds of Life<\/i>, ending with the chapter Anthropophony: Sounds of
\nHumanity<\/i>.\u00a0 <\/span>This is right up my alley!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Caspar Henderson comes
\nto the topic of sound and noise from the very best angle, that of wonder and
\nawe.\u00a0 <\/span>The idea came to him after a visit
\nto a nature preserve on the Norfolk coast where he witnessed tens of thousands
\nof knots, a short stocky bird that migrates from the Arctic each year, flying
\noverhead.\u00a0 <\/span>Within the cacophony Caspar
\ncould distinguish individual wing flaps.\u00a0
\n<\/span>He coined the term \u201cAuraculous\u201d to describe such experiences, the word
\nmeaning a marvel for the ear.\u00a0 <\/span>This is
\nthe true theme of this book.\u00a0 <\/span>Mr.
\nHenderson explores the vast world of sound we live in and create and does so
\nwith a sense of poetry and beauty fitting to the magical world that sound
\nprovides to us.\u00a0 <\/span>As he puts it, \u201cwriting
\nthis book has been an attempt to listen more deeply and hold on to a sense of
\naliveness, in which each moment is a validation of what came before and a
\npreparation for what comes after.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>We
\nlive out our lives ignoring most of the aural sensory input around us, much to
\nour detriment.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>My favorite chapter,
\nBiophony: The Sounds of Life, explores the aural world of our plant and animal
\nbrethren.\u00a0 <\/span>I enjoyed reading about the
\nvarious sounds plants make, many of which our modern ears just ignore.\u00a0 <\/span>One of the old Buddhist koans, meant to
\nencourage introspection, famously reads, \u201cIf a tree falls in the woods, and no
\none is there to hear it, does it make a sound?\u201d\u00a0
\n<\/span>I have always found this inane.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Of course it makes a sound.\u00a0 <\/span>Sound
\nexists whether anything \u201chears\u2019 it.\u00a0
\n<\/span>Sound is merely the vibration of the gas, liquid, and solid matter of
\nthe world.\u00a0 <\/span>Sound existed on Earth far
\nlonger than life has been around and will continue to do so long after humans
\nreach extinction.\u00a0 <\/span>Only the inflated
\negocentrism of humans (which I think is the REAL lesson behind the koan) allows
\nus to imagine ourselves as the primal source of experience in the world.\u00a0 <\/span>What a disservice this is to our fellow
\nliving beings.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Caspar Henderson uses
\nthe last chapter of this book for an exploration of the many sounds created by
\nhumanity, from onomatopoeia and musical instruments to noise pollution, and
\neven to a rumination on silence itself.\u00a0
\n<\/span>In this chapter Mr. Henderson extrapolates the future of man-made sound,
\nincluding the ability to utilize sound for healing as well as for
\nweaponry.\u00a0 <\/span>As with anything in the world,
\nwhether it is used for good or evil is dependent on the human making the
\ndecision.\u00a0 <\/span>Sound can heal and it can
\nharm, therefore it is up to us to determine how best to use it to improve not
\nonly humanity but the beautiful and varied world around us.\u00a0 <\/span>The path towards good or towards evil is one
\nwe embark on in our hearts and minds, way before any action comes.\u00a0 <\/span>Books such as these help us maintain our
\nproper distance from our own ego and allow us to replace ignorance and
\nsupposition with facts and logic.\u00a0 <\/span>Caspar
\nHenderson does us all a great service through his writing.\u00a0 <\/span>I have now read two of his works and will
\nlook forward eagerly to the next one!\u00a0 <\/span>To
\nMr. Henderson, and everyone reading this who loves to search for the Auraculous,
\nI sign off with the rejoinder made famous on the now-defunct Sonic Youth Gossip
\nForum, which exhorts the recipient to live a \u201cSonic Life!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
