It\u2019s a preemptive payment toward your annual income tax. Most of us are familiar with withholding in our normal W2 paychecks. <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"798\" height=\"513\" src=\"https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-65683\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.5555910441087228;width:540px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-8.png 798w, https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-8-300x193.png 300w, https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-8-768x494.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 798px) 100vw, 798px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the case of Roth conversions, withholding is money that your custodian (Schwab, Fidelity, etc.) deducts from the conversion amount and sends directly to the IRS. <\/p>\n<p>Rather than 100% of your dollars ending up in your Roth account, you get 100% <strong><em>minus<\/em> <\/strong>your tax rate. <\/p>\n<p>By electing this withholding choice, you are using <strong>qualified Roth IRA dollars<\/strong> to pay your taxes. That could probably be the end of the article right there. <\/p>\n<p>Would you rather pay your taxes using regular bank dollars? Or using Roth IRA dollars? It\u2019s a clear choice. <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"209\" src=\"https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-9.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-65684\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-9.png 400w, https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-9-300x157.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>But numbers will help us clarify further. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Two Simple Roth Conversion Scenarios<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s say you convert $10,000\u00a0in\u00a0the 12% Federal bracket.\u00a0You also have a normal bank\u00a0account with\u00a0$50,000 in it.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scenario\u00a01: You\u00a0<strong>withhold\u00a0<\/strong>your taxes from the conversion.\u00a0<\/h5>\n<p>You convert the $10,000. You withhold $1200. Only\u00a0$8800\u00a0ends up in Roth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You still have $50,000 in the bank.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scenario 2: You\u00a0<strong>use bank dollars<\/strong>\u00a0to pay the tax bill.\u00a0<\/h5>\n<p>You convert the $10,000. All $10,000 ends up in your Roth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You now have $48,800 in the bank.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Difference is Clear<\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s a\u00a0$1200\u00a0difference between the scenarios.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That $1200 either ends up in your bank account or in your Roth IRA. <\/p>\n<p>I know which one I\u2019d prefer, and it\u2019s not even close. <em>It\u2019s the Roth!<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"867\" height=\"1300\" src=\"https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/pexels-photo-21562931.jpeg\" alt=\"a blue yes button and a red no button\" class=\"wp-image-65687\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.6669314089309434;width:186px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/pexels-photo-21562931.jpeg 867w, https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/pexels-photo-21562931-200x300.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/pexels-photo-21562931-683x1024.jpeg 683w, https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/pexels-photo-21562931-768x1152.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 867px) 100vw, 867px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>In fact, you could easily argue that withholding taxes from your Roth conversion is <em>so<\/em> inefficient that it\u2019s actually worse than never having done the conversion in the first place. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are you 59 Yet? Because It Gets Worse\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re <strong>younger<\/strong> than 59.5, then today\u2019s idea is even <em>worse<\/em> for you. <\/p>\n<p>Early withdrawals from IRAs and 401ks typically come with a 10% penalty tax. <\/p>\n<p>Roth conversions are <strong>not<\/strong> considered an early withdrawal. Roth conversions are safe. <\/p>\n<p><strong>BUT<\/strong>\u2026if you withhold taxes from your Roth conversion, then that withheld portion is <strong>not<\/strong> considered a conversion. It\u2019s considered a distribution. An <em>early<\/em> distribution. Subject to a 10% penalty.<\/p>\n<p>You owe extra taxes on the money you withheld to pay taxes. It\u2019s taxes all the way down. <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"324\" height=\"308\" src=\"https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-11.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-65690\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-11.png 324w, https:\/\/bestinterest.blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-11-300x285.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 324px) 100vw, 324px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>You do not want to do this. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What To Do Instead<\/h2>\n<p>When you make a Roth conversion, you\u2019ll want to pay the tax bill using <strong><em>non<\/em>-qualified dollars<\/strong>, such as those found in your bank account or taxable brokerage account. <em>Though ideally, you aren\u2019t realizing capital gains in your taxable account to pay your Roth conversion bill! <\/em><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll want to make sure that you\u2019re safe-harbored <em>(which is its own complicated explanation)<\/em>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Or that you make an intra-year quarterly estimated tax payment to cover your conversion. <\/p>\n<p>Just don\u2019t withhold taxes from your Roth conversions.
