multiple features that should be standard across all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adamriemer.me\/affiliate-marketing\/what-is-the-job-of-an-affiliate-network-10-things-to-think-about\/\">affiliate networks<\/a> and platforms, but they aren\u2019t.\u00a0 Some charge fees for them, some include them free, while others don\u2019t have them because their tech stack is outdated.\u00a0 If these features are not on your platform, you\u2019re likely disadvantaged to your competitors.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re evaluating platforms, looking to improve and update your own affiliate program, or are a network and want feedback, here\u2019s what I\u2019m seeing as opportunities for the networks to improve.<\/p>\n<h2>Commissioning By URL Slug and Subdomain<\/h2>\n<p>Networks like <a href=\"https:\/\/impact.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Impact<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/partnerstack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PartnerStack<\/a> make this easy.\u00a0 You can plug in a root domain and set a standard commission for any referral off of it.\u00a0 Then you can plug in subdomains and slugs or folders like \u201cadamriemer.me\/folder-here\/blog-post-name-here\u201d and assign unique commissions if the referral comes from this page only.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8872 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/adamriemer.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/assigning-commissions-based-on-page-or-folder.jpg\" alt=\"assigning commissions based https:\/\/adamriemer.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/assigning-commissions-based-on-page-or-folder-1536x1391.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The benefits of this feature include:<span id=\"more-8871\"\/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Applying 0% commissions and payouts if advertising disclosures are not in place or removed from certain pages, YouTube videos, etc\u2026 but not others.<\/li>\n<li>Websites that have multiple touch points including listcicles, reviews, comparisons, and coupons will let affiliate managers incentivize higher value traffic.\n<ul>\n<li>Listcicle features and top-funnel leads \u2013 20% commissions + $1 email sign up<\/li>\n<li>Comparisons \u2013 15% commissions<\/li>\n<li>Reviews \u2013 10% commissions<\/li>\n<li>Coupon pages \u2013 2% commissions<\/li>\n<li>The rest of the website \u2013 12%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Subnetworks are incentivized to share the referring URL helping the manager to enforce program compliance through transparency.\n<ul>\n<li>Managers can also incentivize specifical collaborators, influencers, and websites via the referring URL from the sub network.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One extra value here is that the partners can see these custom commissions.\u00a0 If they want to earn more, they can add you to these pages with higher payouts.\u00a0 You can also negotiate better commissions moving forward as the doors will open with them.<\/p>\n<p>You as an affiliate manager can cut a deal to create a promotion or content with a theme and predetermined URL that will be used.\u00a0 Now you plug the URL into the system and set the custom commission in advance.\u00a0 Once it goes live, the affiliate now gets the increased payouts.<\/p>\n<p>Note: There are ways to game this, but also ways to detect and prevent abusing it, so it isn\u2019t as risky as it sounds.<\/p>\n<h2>Automated ID and Parameter Changes<\/h2>\n<p>Being able to create a shell similar to TinyURL, Pretty Link Pro, etc\u2026 where the affiliate can apply a standard affiliate link across multiple pages, videos, posts, etc\u2026 has ups and downs.\u00a0 When networks provide this, the affiliate can automatically change all broken affiliate links to working ones via the merchant and creative ID without needing to change the tracking parameters or each individual link.<\/p>\n<p>Situations this helps include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A merchant closes their program and affiliates want a competitor on the same network.<\/li>\n<li>When creatives get deactivated, the affiliate can enter a new banner ID and the links work again.<\/li>\n<li>Affiliates change programs or want to test a new merchant on the same network, a replacement of the merchant and banner ID changes the links in seconds vs. spending hours making changes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is easier than the networks likely think it is to implement.\u00a0 Virtually all networks have a URL shortener, all they need to do is store the shortened URLs and let affiliates add a label.\u00a0 Now the affiliate can either unshorten the link and replace the merchant and banner ID, or enter the new ones into the system and the system replaces it before or during the redirect.\u00a0 Now the links automatically update.<\/p>\n<h2>Marketplace Join and Response Stats<\/h2>\n<p>Almost all affiliate networks have publisher marketplaces where you can invite affiliates to your program.\u00a0 These marketplaces get abused and recruitment emails mostly get ignored.\u00a0 What would be helpful is to share stats on both the merchants (companies with affiliate programs) and affiliates with their responses and engagements.<\/p>\n<h3>Affiliates<\/h3>\n<p>The following can help merchants get a better use of their time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Last login to the network and ideally the marketplace.<\/li>\n<li>How many invitations they accept vs ignore and reject.<\/li>\n<li>Their promotional methods, and requiring a verification to be accurate.<\/li>\n<li>Feedback scores from merchants like ShareASale had where merchants leave comments like <em>\u201ccoupon site pretending to be content\u201d<\/em> or <em>\u201ctrademark bidding\u201d<\/em> and where the affiliate can respond and defend themselves to be fair.\n<ul>\n<li>Multiple merchants would say <em>\u201cno sales\u201d<\/em> and leave a negative score, that was not fair to do and these ones should have an option to be deleted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Merchants<\/h3>\n<p>The partners could benefit by seeing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Uptime and downtime.<\/li>\n<li>PPC, browser extension, coupon site rules and TOS.<\/li>\n<li>Late payments and funding status (having a credit card on file or not).<\/li>\n<li>Feedback about tracking being broken, non-responsive managers, non-commissionable skus and categories the merchant doesn\u2019t share publicly, etc\u2026 to help other affiliates avoid less than stellar programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Notes and Team Tagging on Partner Pages<\/h2>\n<p>I know <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AWIN<\/a> built this in as a special request for us (thank you again for that), but all networks should have it and it should not be limited to small character counts like 300.\u00a0 The notes feature is available on a few networks, but not an industry standard.<\/p>\n<p>By allowing the merchant to have a notes archive about the partner and on the partner page the affiliate team can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Leave notes about custom commissions, paid promotions, and what the deal was.<\/li>\n<li>Any results based on campaigns and performance to help with future decisions.<\/li>\n<li>Policy violations and corrective actions that are taken.<\/li>\n<li>Preferred contact information if the partner wants better communication.<\/li>\n<li>URLs and channels they have that are not listed in the account.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The issue with the networks that do have this is some limit the character amounts.\u00a0 Copying and pasting URLs in for two pieces of content eats up the character limits fast.\u00a0 We need at least 500 to leave an effective note.\u00a0 The same goes with character limits on the direct contact emails where you\u2019re sending individually.<\/p>\n<p>Tagging team members works like a CRM system for programs with multiple managers.\u00a0 The recruiter could tag the manager about the partner once recruited for someone that needs onboarding.\u00a0 The manager can tag customer support with questions or the company\u2019s email team or SEO with questions and they can go directly to the partner page to see the note.\u00a0 Then these people (as long as they\u2019re added to the network) can go in and respond to the manager.\u00a0 \u00a0There\u2019s no shortage of benefits to this feature.<\/p>\n<h2>Controlling Affiliate Accounts on Affiliate Pages<\/h2>\n<p>This one is shocking that more networks do not have.\u00a0 Customizing the relationship of the affiliate partner directly on their publisher page.\u00a0 Some networks (including the big ones) do not let you do the following on the individual affiliate page:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Customize commissions.<\/li>\n<li>Tagging partners directly, you have to go to a separate tags page to tag and categorize them.<\/li>\n<li>Create triggered emails based on performance.\n<ul>\n<li>A YouTuber would get a different message than a discord channel and a blogger would get another.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Alerting merchants when traffic climbs or falls automatically by partner, especially when combined with tags like VIP, custom commission for sales minimum, etc\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Every company has technical debt and deals with dinosaur code bases.\u00a0 But these are features that should be standard as they make the merchant\u2019s lives easier and can help generate more sales making the network more money.\u00a0 It\u2019s one of the first things we look at when onboarding new clients for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adamriemer.me\/digital-marketing-agency\/affiliate-management-what-makes-me-different\/\">affiliate management<\/a>, and something in house <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adamriemer.me\/affiliate-program-management\/affiliate-managers-job-how-much-they-make\/\">affiliate managers should have as part of their jobs<\/a> each year.\u00a0 If you want
