What made this parcel particularly exciting was that every bottle came from Brazil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For both Nicola and I, this was completely new territory. We\u2019ve tasted whiskies from all over the world, but Brazilian single malt whisky was a first.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1422\" height=\"1070\" src=\"https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-3.png\" alt=\"Andre de Almeida from Inside The Cask Ltd\" class=\"wp-image-232088\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.3289960708387905\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-3.png 1422w, https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-3-300x226.png 300w, https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-3-768x578.png 768w, https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-3-250x188.png 250w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1422px) 100vw, 1422px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The seven samples came from two distilleries: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lamasdestilaria.com.br\/institucional\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\">Lamas Distilaria<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uniondistillery.com.br\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow external noopener noreferrer\">Union Distilaria<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Line-up<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Union Distillery<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Barley Wine Cask Finish<\/strong> | 46% ABV | Limited Edition Matured in bourbon oak casks for eight years before spending a further 18 months finishing in beer-seasoned oak casks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PX Sherry Cask Finish \u201cExtra Turfado\u201d<\/strong> | 48% ABV | Limited Edition | Autograph Series\u201dExtra Turfado\u201d, meaning extra peated, was matured in bourbon oak casks for eight years and finished for 18 months in PX sherry casks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Vintage 2005<\/strong> | 48% ABVDistilled in 2005 and bottled in 2022, this is one of Union\u2019s oldest releases. The distillery has since released a 20-year-old expression matured entirely in bourbon casks.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lamas Distillery<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rarus<\/strong> | 43% ABV | Double Cask Range Matured in bourbon casks for six years before being finished in American oak rum casks from the distillery\u2019s own rum production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Angico<\/strong> | 43% ABV | Limited EditionMatured in bourbon oak casks for six years and finished in native Angico wood casks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sassafras<\/strong> | 43% ABV | Limited Edition Matured in bourbon oak casks for six years and finished in native Sassafras wood casks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Spirit of Brazil<\/strong> | 46.7% ABV | Limited Edition Matured in bourbon oak casks for seven years and finished in native Pau Brasil wood casks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A big thank you to Andre for sending us these samples and giving us the chance to explore something completely different.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1268\" height=\"950\" src=\"https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Union-Distillery.webp\" alt=\"Union Distillery Brazil, the copper stills in the still house\" class=\"wp-image-232093 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Union-Distillery.webp 1268w, https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Union-Distillery-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Union-Distillery-768x575.webp 768w, https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Union-Distillery-250x187.webp 250w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1268px) 100vw, 1268px\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1268px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1268\/950;\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Image courtesy of Inside the Cask Ltd.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Few Interesting Facts<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A couple of things stood out straight away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of the whiskies are bottled at 75cl, which makes a nice change from the standard 70cl we\u2019re used to seeing in the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lamas Distillery is based in a hot, humid part of Brazil, where tropical maturation means the angel\u2019s share sits at around 6% to 7% each year. Scotland\u2019s angel\u2019s share is approximately 1% to 2 % due to our mild, temperate climate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Union Distillery, on the other hand, is located in a region with a more Mediterranean climate, resulting in a lower rate of evaporation during maturation, around 5% to 6% each year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Union Distillery was founded in 1984 and began producing whisky in 1972. They sell most of their production as bulk whisky in Brazil and abroad but since 2019 have been focusing more on their own branded products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lamas Distilaria was established in 2019 and, alongside its single malt range, also produces a blended whisky called <em>Canem<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With seven samples sitting in front of me, choosing where to start wasn\u2019t easy, but I eventually settled on two drams for an initial tasting.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"361\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/lamas-distillaria-e1781817498526.webp\" alt=\"Lamas Distillaria\" class=\"wp-image-232089 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 361px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 361\/630;width:161px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/lamas-distillaria-e1781817498526.webp 361w, https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/lamas-distillaria-e1781817498526-172x300.webp 172w, https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/lamas-distillaria-e1781817498526-250x436.webp 250w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 361px) 100vw, 361px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lamas Spirit of Brazil | 46.7% ABV<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Colour:<\/strong> Polished teak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nose:<\/strong> Soft orchard fruits drizzled with peach schnapps, backed up by vanilla and honeyed sweetness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Palate:<\/strong> Richer than the nose suggests, with notes of chocolate, raspberries, honey and buttery crumble topping. Just a drop of water brings out a lovely creamy texture, almost like panna cotta.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Finish:<\/strong> Medium in length, smooth and fruit-led.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"999\" height=\"1499\" src=\"https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Union-Malt.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-232090 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 999px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 999\/1499;aspect-ratio:0.6664516426300512;width:236px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Union-Malt.webp 999w, https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Union-Malt-200x300.webp 200w, https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Union-Malt-768x1152.webp 768w, https:\/\/whiskyboys.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Union-Malt-250x375.webp 250w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 999px) 100vw, 999px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Union Extra Turfado | 48% ABV<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Colour:<\/strong> Copacabana sand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nose:<\/strong> Fruity and elegant, with a gentle burst of citrus. The peat is soft and slightly sweet, with vanilla sitting quietly in the background.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Palate:<\/strong> Sweet peat arrives first, followed by more citrus, vanilla and a touch of shaved coconut. I really enjoyed this one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Finish:<\/strong> Long, aromatic and gently smoky, with the peat, fruit and vanilla lingering nicely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the two, the Extra Turfado just edged it for me. I\u2019d love to pour this into a blind tasting alongside a few peated Scotch and Irish whiskies and see how people get on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, that was a grand wee tasting the drams freom Brazil were great and I would expect ,and hope, that they will be showingh up in trhe UK soon, they are good enough. In my opinion these drams could all stand up veery well gto some Scotch and world Whiskies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, this was a cracking introduction to Brazilian single malt whisky.
