Eleuthera vs Exumas: a firsthand comparison of swimming pigs, beaches, cost, & where to stay on the Bahamas\u2019 most laid-back islands.<\/em><\/p>\n

Somewhere around day four, my dad in the passenger seat and the rest of the family trailing behind in two more rental cars, he leaned over and asked, half jokingly \u201care we there yet?\u201d That\u2019s Eleuthera: a 110-mile-long island where setting off in search of a particular beach is rarely straightforward, but the reward is always worth it.<\/p>\n

Compare that to a few years earlier, when I\u2019d spent a week on Staniel Cay with friends and never once got in a car. We covered the entire island by golf cart in about the time it took my family to reach one beach in Eleuthera.<\/p>\n

Two trips, both in the Bahamas\u2019 Out Islands, both technically \u201cswimming pig\u201d destinations \u2013 and almost nothing else about them was the same.<\/p>\n

Travelers comparing destinations in the Bahamas often want to know which island is better \u2013 Eleuthera and the Exumas \u2013 and I get why. They show up on the same lists, get lumped into the same \u201coff-the-beaten-path Bahamas\u201d conversation, and both promise that laid-back, unpolished feel that\u2019s getting harder to find in the Caribbean. <\/p>\n

But they\u2019re not really competing for the same trip. One rewards patience and a rental car. The other rewards showing up and doing almost nothing at all.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what I learned taking both trips \u2013 one with a group of ten, one with friends \u2013 so you can figure out which island actually fits the vacation you\u2019re trying to take.<\/p>\n

Getting There<\/h2>\n

Neither island is a quick trip if you\u2019re not flying out of Florida, so build a travel day into your itinerary either way rather than planning anything for the day you land.<\/p>\n

I flew into North Eleuthera Airport (ELH) from San Diego, which meant a connection through Miami on the way there and a stop in Charlotte on the way home. It wasn\u2019t a brutal travel day, but it also wasn\u2019t a quick one \u2013 between the connection, the wait for baggage, and the drive from the airport down to Palmetto Point, plan to lose most of a day just getting settled in.<\/p>\n

Staniel Cay works similarly, though the routing looks a little different depending on where you\u2019re flying from. If you\u2019re coming from the East Coast, you can fly straight into Staniel Cay\u2019s airport (TYM) from Fort Lauderdale, or connect through Nassau. From the West Coast, expect a layover in Charlotte and Nassau before the short 30-minute flight into the Exumas with Flamingo Air \u2013 a small charter-style hop that\u2019s part of the fun, since you get a bird\u2019s-eye view of the cays on the way in.<\/p>\n

Getting Around<\/h2>\n

This is probably the biggest practical difference between the two: you need a rental car on Eleuthera.<\/strong> It\u2019s 110 miles long with no public transportation, and unless you\u2019re planning to stay at one resort for your entire trip and never leave the property, a car isn\u2019t optional.<\/p>\n

Car rentals on Eleuthera don\u2019t work the way you\u2019d expect either. There\u2019s no Hertz or Enterprise counter waiting for you. We booked our cars through email and WhatsApp, which is how a lot of things get arranged on the island. It works, but go in expecting a more casual, personal process than you\u2019re used to.<\/p>\n

Staniel Cay flips this completely. At under 2 square miles, a golf cart (around $60\u201370\/day) gets you anywhere on the island in about five minutes, and most things are walkable anyway.<\/p>\n

Where To Stay<\/h2>\n

Eleuthera<\/h3>\n

We stayed in Palmetto Point, which is Central Eleuthera, and used it as our base to explore all the way from the northern tip down to Lighthouse Beach at the southern tip.<\/p>\n

A tip if you\u2019re planning your own trip:<\/strong> power outages happen fairly often on Eleuthera, and we experienced one ourselves. This is exactly why I push staying at one of the nicer hotels over renting a private house if you can swing it \u2013 the good ones have backup generators, so you\u2019re not left in the dark (literally) waiting for the power to come back on.<\/p>\n

La Bougainvillea<\/strong><\/a>: I booked this for my parents for a few days before the rest of our family arrived and they absolutely loved it. It\u2019s set on 50 acres of private pink sand beach near Governor\u2019s Harbour, with a pool, on-site restaurant, and a quiet, secluded feel that made it easy for them to relax without needing to drive everywhere. The location, accessibility, and reviews made it an easy choice, and it delivered.<\/p>\n

The Cove Eleuthera<\/strong><\/a>: If you want a more upscale, resort-style stay, The Cove is one of the best on the island. It sits on two private coves near Gregory Town, with an infinity pool, spa, and a beautiful setting on the calmer Caribbean side of the island.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re traveling with a larger group like we were, a vacation rental can still make sense \u2013 just confirm a generator is included and fully fueled before each new guest arrives. We had some issues with the house we rented, so I won\u2019t recommend it here, but there are a plethora of options on VRBO<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Exumas<\/h3>\n

EMBRACE Resort<\/strong><\/a>: This is where I stayed on Staniel Cay, and it\u2019s a great fit for everyone from solo travelers to full families, with seven villa styles ranging from one-bedroom units to a three-bedroom villa with a full kitchen. It\u2019s also right next to the airport, so travel days are painless.<\/p>\n
