Caring for a pet with cognitive decline can drain your energy, your patience, and your sleep. On the days your pet isn’t feeling well, all of this gets harder still.<\/span><\/p>\n You know your pet better than anyone else does. Pay attention to which situations tend to increase their agitation, anxiety, or confusion \u2014 and protect them, and yourself, from those where you can.<\/span><\/p>\n One thing I’ve borrowed from my work with pets who experience separation anxiety, fear, or reactivity: a frozen lick mat offered around sundown is often remarkably effective at easing the restlessness many pets show at that time of day.<\/span><\/p>\n I tell every family I support: taking care of yourself<\/em> is one of the most meaningful things you can do for a pet who is declining. Sleep deprivation and the stress of being away \u2014 whether for work, a day of errands<\/a> or necessary travel <\/a>\u2014 are two of the heaviest burdens I see caregivers carry.<\/span><\/p>\n There’s nothing wrong with saying, out loud, “let’s take a break” \u2014 and meaning it. A nap. A call to someone who can help.
