I think it’s official. Perimenopause has stopped knocking politely and has now moved into my brain rent-free. I had one of those days at work where I seriously considered putting my brain on a milk carton. And – these days seem to be coming more frequently\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Report\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Missing Brain: Last seen sometime around 8:15 am and answers to… well… apparently nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s review the evidence shall we – First, I lost my work tablet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not once.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not twice.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not three times.<\/span><\/p>\n

Six.<\/span><\/p>\n

SIX times! By the third time, my coworkers weren’t even asking where I’d left it.<\/span><\/p>\n

They were just pointing.<\/span><\/p>\n

“There it is, Amy.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Again.<\/span><\/p>\n

At one point I started wondering if my co-workers were messing with me and moving it\u2026 sadly no – it was me – all me.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then came my next brilliant moment.<\/span><\/p>\n

I confidently walked up to the front door of the store, pulled out my car key, pointed it at the lock, and repeatedly pushed the unlock button.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n

I stood there for several seconds wondering why the door wasn’t cooperating before it finally dawned on me…<\/span><\/p>\n

You know…<\/span><\/p>\n

Because it’s a BUILDING.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not a Honda.<\/span><\/p>\n

And just when I thought I had reached peak embarrassment…<\/span><\/p>\n

The phone rang.<\/span><\/p>\n

I answered with my usual cheerful customer service voice.”Thank you for calling Jared…”<\/span><\/p>\n

Then…<\/span><\/p>\n

Nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Complete silence.<\/span><\/p>\n

I couldn’t remember my own name.<\/span><\/p>\n

MY NAME.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not the store’s name.<\/span><\/p>\n

My own.<\/span><\/p>\n

The one I’ve had my entire life. There was this awkward pause while my brain searched every filing cabinet it has.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the customer is still patiently waiting on the other end of the line while I’m internally thinking,<\/span><\/p>\n

“Who am I?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Eventually it came back to me.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thankfully.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because introducing yourself as, “Um… hold please…” probably isn’t company policy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here’s the funny thing. Ten years ago, I probably would have cried over a day like this. Today? I just laugh. I mean – it is better to laugh than cry – and trust me – there is plenty of tears going around too\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Because apparently this is what perimenopause does.<\/span><\/p>\n

One minute you’re a successful, capable, responsible adult.<\/span><\/p>\n

The next you’re trying to unlock buildings with your car key while searching for the tablet that’s sitting right beside you.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you’ve found yourself forgetting words…<\/span><\/p>\n

Walking into rooms and completely forgetting why you\u2019re there…<\/span><\/p>\n

Putting your phone in the refrigerator…<\/span><\/p>\n

Or introducing yourself to someone you’ve already met three times…<\/span><\/p>\n

Welcome to the Perimenopause Diaries.<\/span><\/p>\n

You’re among friends.<\/span><\/p>\n

And if you’re not in perimenopause yet…<\/span><\/p>\n

Go ahead and laugh at us while we are trying desperately to hold it together – Cause we sure as heck are laughing at ourselves (well some of us).<\/span><\/p>\n

Beware though – Your turn is coming.<\/span><\/p>\n

In all seriousness, I’ve learned something through all of this and I want to share it with you in hopes of offering some encouragement in this unpredictable season of life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes the best thing we can do is laugh at ourselves. The bible says in Proverbs 17:22 \u201cA joyful heart is good medicine\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

We don’t have to be perfect.<\/span><\/p>\n

We don’t have to have it all together every day.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some days our brain simply decides to clock out before we do.<\/span><\/p>\n

So don\u2019t give up. Keep on keeping on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Laugh and tell yourself – Let\u2019s try again tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n

And – If you happen to see a woman standing in front of a store repeatedly pressing her car key…<\/span><\/p>\n

Be kind.<\/span><\/p>\n

She isn’t losing her mind.<\/span><\/p>\n

She’s probably just writing her next <\/span>Perimenopause Diaries<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
