The people with the most potential are often the ones most at risk of losing themselves.

They’re driven to grow, to serve, and to build something meaningful. That drive is often what turns a manager into a leader—but it can also dig a hole that’s too deep to climb out of. Not because they failed, but because they became consumed by the business of building.

Somewhere along the way, they stop investing in the things that made them who they are: their faith, their family, their friendships, their health, and their inner life. The danger is that none of this shows up on a performance review. You can hit every target and still be losing.

That’s the real difference between managing and leading. Managing is measured by what you produce. Leadership is measured by who you’re becoming while you produce it—because that’s the person people are actually following.

So here’s a question worth sitting with:

Who do you have that can help you out of the hole?

Who has permission to tell you when you’re drifting? Who knows you well enough to remind you who you are when what you do starts to define you?

Growth is good. Ambition is a gift. Building something worthwhile matters. Leading people is a privilege.

But don’t lose yourself in the process.

Jesus asked a question that still confronts us today:

“What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” — Mark 8:36

Success is never worth the cost of losing the person God created you to be.

The best leaders aren’t the ones who climbed the highest. They’re the ones who stayed whole on the way up.
