Thus, today we\u2019ll explore Beck\u2019s cognitive triad and how it can help all of us with our <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What-Is-Becks-Cognitive-Triad\"\/>What Is Beck\u2019s Cognitive Triad<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p>Beck\u2019s cognitive triad, or <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beck%27s_cognitive_triad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">negative triad<\/a><\/span>, is, as the name suggests, made of three components: the self, the world, and the future. These three components make up our belief system and shape how we see everything. When it comes to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a><\/span>, the triad causes automatic and uncontrollable negative <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/intrusive-thoughts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intrusive thoughts<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The-self\"\/><strong>The self<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h4>\n<p>We\u2019ll start viewing ourselves as somehow unworthy, inadequate, unlovable, etc. This can lead to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/decoding-your-inner-voice-how-to-change-negative-self-talk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">negative self-talk<\/a><\/span> like: \u201cI\u2019m useless\u201d, \u201cI\u2019m unlovable\u201d, and \u201cI\u2019m a failure\u201d.<\/p>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The-world\"\/><strong>The world<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h4>\n<p>Here we\u2019ll develop beliefs about the world around us, often coloured by our experiences. We may see the world as unfair or see life as overwhelming. We may develop thoughts along the lines of \u201cnothing ever goes my way\u201d or \u201ceverything or everyone is against me\u201d.<\/p>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The-future\"\/><strong>The future<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h4>\n<p>When we\u2019ve already developed such a negative mindset, our thoughts about the future will inevitably warp. Thus, we may have thoughts about how life is pain, hardship, and suffering. This can lead to negative <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/intrusive-thoughts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intrusive thoughts<\/a><\/span> like, \u201cnothing\u2019s going to get better no matter what I do\u201d and \u201cI have no future, so why bother?\u201d.<\/p>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A-Bit-More-On-Becks-Cognitive-Triad-Model-Of-Depression\"\/>A Bit More On Beck\u2019s Cognitive Triad Model Of Depression<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"0\">According to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"#The\">The Open University<\/a><\/span> (n.d.), Beck\u2019s cognitive triad was developed by psychiatrist Aaron Beck in the 1960s and is a foundational model in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). It proposes that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a><\/span> is largely maintained by an automatic, interconnected web of negative thoughts focused on three core areas: The self, the world, and the future.<\/p>\n<h6 data-path-to-node=\"0\">\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"1\">Beck\u2019s cognitive triad and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/examining-your-core-beliefs-for-improved-mental-wellbeing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">core beliefs<\/a> <\/span>are linked in this model, which I frequently talk about with my clients and in my article on <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/examining-your-core-beliefs-for-improved-mental-wellbeing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">core beliefs<\/a><\/span>, although I don\u2019t state it\u2019s Beck\u2019s cognitive triad. But this is where we\u2019ll see <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/thinking-errors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cognitive biases<\/a><\/span> and unhealthy <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/examining-your-core-beliefs-for-improved-mental-wellbeing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">core beliefs<\/a><\/span> develop.<\/p>\n<h6 data-path-to-node=\"1\">\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"1\">Thus, when we experience <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a><\/span>, these thoughts function like tinted lenses, filtering out positive experiences and reinforcing a sense of helplessness.<\/p>\n<h6 data-path-to-node=\"1\">\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"1\">According to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"#McLeod\">McLeod<\/a><\/span> (2026), there\u2019s another layer to this. Beck believed he identified three mechanisms that were responsible for <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a><\/span>, with one part being Beck\u2019s cognitive triad (automatic negative thinking).<\/p>\n<h6 data-path-to-node=\"1\">\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"1\">The other two are negative self-schemas and errors in logic. These three processes then interact in ways that interfere with normal cognitive processing, affecting our perception, memory, and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/being-proactive-and-problem-solving-your-worries-away\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">problem-solving<\/a><\/span> ability as we become obsessed with negative thoughts.<\/p>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Becks-Cognitive-Triad-Negative-Feedback-Loop\"\/>Beck\u2019s Cognitive Triad Negative Feedback Loop<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p>According to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"#Tutor2u\">Tutor2u<\/a><\/span> (n.d.), Beck found that people who are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depressed<\/a><\/span> are more likely to focus on the negatives, ignoring the positives, which is one of the many <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/thinking-errors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cognitive biases<\/a><\/span> that we can develop. This compounds our already negative views of ourselves, the world, and our futures.<\/p>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p>With negative thinking like this left unchallenged, it grows and becomes all-consuming so that we can start to become overwhelmed with negative <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/intrusive-thoughts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intrusive thoughts<\/a><\/span> (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"#The\">The Open University<\/a><\/span>, n.d.). All this is a classic symptom of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a><\/span> (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"#Tutor2u\">Tutor2u<\/a><\/span>, n.d.).<\/p>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p>The issue is, our brains are lazy. They will use a shortcut, even if that\u2019s not the best thing for us. This means our brains will use <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/thinking-errors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cognitive biases<\/a><\/span> like catastrophising (expecting the absolute worst), <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/dichotomous-thinking-and-bpd-what-you-need-to-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dichotomous thinking<\/a><\/span> (black-and-white thinking), and filtering out the positives to focus on the negatives, because it fits the unhealthy core beliefs. The unhealthy <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/examining-your-core-beliefs-for-improved-mental-wellbeing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">core beliefs<\/a><\/span> cause us to gain and reinforce <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/thinking-errors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cognitive biases<\/a><\/span>. And around we go.<\/p>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p>The problem is, we often develop maladapted <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/examining-your-core-beliefs-for-improved-mental-wellbeing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">core beliefs<\/a><\/span> at a young age, but they can often go unnoticed. So the groundwork could have been laid years ago. All it needs is something to trigger it, like a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/bad-news-how-can-we-better-manage-stressful-life-events\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">life stressor<\/a><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/how-to-douse-out-the-flames-of-burnout\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">burnout<\/a><\/span>, or a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/why-major-life-changes-can-feel-like-traumatic-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">loss<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p>Annoyingly, more often than not. Rather than doing the things that might help us get back on track, avoiding <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a><\/span> setting in. We\u2019ll instead start to withdraw from life, which just feeds our <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\" data-path-to-node=\"11\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Using-Becks-Cognitive-Triad-Model-To-Manage-Depression\"\/>Using Beck\u2019s Cognitive Triad Model To Manage Depression<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"23,0\">Although Beck\u2019s cognitive triad model of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a><\/span> has been a cornerstone in shaping therapeutic interventions for <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a><\/span> and other mental health issues, some argue it\u2019s not as useful as more modern approaches (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"#Tsolakis\">Tsolakis<\/a><\/span>, 2025).<\/p>\n<h6 data-path-to-node=\"23,0\">\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"23,0\">Some support for this comes from <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"#Huang\">Huang et al.<\/a><\/span> (2026), who commented on how research into the effectiveness of Beck\u2019s cognitive triad has a history of being inconsistent. So they gathered and combined data from many previous studies (meta-analysis) to see how Beck\u2019s cognitive triad, his three specific types of negative thoughts (about oneself, the world, and the future), relates to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a><\/span>\u2014both at a single point in time and over longer periods. 59 cross-sectional studies (132 effect sizes) were included in this study, finding that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a><\/span> has a strong association with Beck\u2019s cognitive triad.<\/p>\n<h6 data-path-to-node=\"23,0\">\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"23,0\">Further support for this comes from a study by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"#Hollon\">Hollon<\/a><\/span> (2022), whose work on <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/thinking-errors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cognitive biases<\/a><\/span> supported the theory proposed by Beck. They found that change in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/thinking-errors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cognitive biases<\/a><\/span> preceded and predicted change in affective symptoms of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a><\/span>, and that change in affective symptoms preceded and predicted change in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/thinking-errors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cognitive biases<\/a><\/span>. Simply put, they\u2019re reciprocal.<\/p>\n<h6 data-path-to-node=\"23,0\">\u00a0<\/h6>\n<h4 data-path-to-node=\"23,0\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Challenging-distorted-thinking\"\/><strong>Challenging distorted thinking<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h4>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"23,0\">A study by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"#P\u00f6ssel\">P\u00f6ssel<\/a><\/span> (2016) concluded that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/the-benefits-of-the-thought-challenge-putting-thoughts-on-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thought challenges<\/a><\/span> are a plausible intervention target. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/the-benefits-of-the-thought-challenge-putting-thoughts-on-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thought challenges<\/a><\/span> like <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/the-art-of-reframing-and-its-benefits-to-our-wellbeing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reframing<\/a><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/the-benefits-of-the-thought-challenge-putting-thoughts-on-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">putting our thoughts on trial<\/a><\/span>, and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/cognitive-reappraisal-the-ability-to-look-for-the-silver-lining\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cognitive reappraisal<\/a><\/span> are common approaches in CBT. I use them a lot with my clients, and even created worksheets for these to help people develop these skills.<\/p>\n<h6 data-path-to-node=\"23,0\">\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p>For example, if we have a negative <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/intrusive-thoughts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intrusive thought<\/a><\/span>, we can treat the thought like a hypothesis, one that needs to be tested in a lab before being accepted as proven fact. We can ask ourselves questions like, \u201cWhat is the objective evidence supporting my thought?\u201d, \u201cWhat is the objective evidence contradicting my thought?\u201d, and \u201cWhat would I say to a close friend in this exact situation?\u201d (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/the-art-of-reframing-and-its-benefits-to-our-wellbeing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reframing<\/a><\/span>).<\/p>\n<h6 data-path-to-node=\"12\">\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p>It\u2019s worth noting that for some, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/intrusive-thoughts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intrusive thoughts<\/a><\/span> can continue in spite of the evidence that proves that negative <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/intrusive-thoughts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intrusive thoughts<\/a><\/span> are wrong (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"#McLeod\">McLeod<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 16px;\">, 2026)<\/span>. We need to take notice of the thoughts as they happen rather than accepting them as absolute fact. A simple way to do this is to turn it into a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/Journaling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">journal<\/a><\/span> task, and write down the situation and the immediate internal commentary when it happens. Then put the thoughts to the test.<\/p>\n<h6 data-path-to-node=\"14\">\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14\">Once we get better at challenging our thoughts, we will be able to do it on the fly, rather than having to keep writing them down. However, some people like to keep this <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/Journaling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">journaling<\/a><\/span> task going. So pick what\u2019s best for us on an individual level.<\/p>\n<h6 data-path-to-node=\"14\">\u00a0<\/h6>\n<h4 data-path-to-node=\"15\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Identify-the-distortion\"\/><strong>Identify the distortion<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h4>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"16\">Another usual <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/Journaling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">journaling<\/a><\/span> task is to ask ourselves which part of Beck\u2019s cognitive triad this is coming from, and if we\u2019re engaging in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/thinking-errors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cognitive biases<\/a><\/span>. Because the worse our mental wellbeing is, the more likely we are to be suffering from <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/thinking-errors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cognitive biases<\/a><\/span>. Reflect on what <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/thinking-errors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cognitive biases<\/a><\/span> could be warping our sense of selves, the world around us, and our futures.<\/p>\n<h6 data-path-to-node=\"16\">\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"16\">Then we can work out a plan to overcome them, which often falls into the realm of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/positive-psychology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">positive psychology<\/a><\/span> interventions. For example, if we\u2019re filtering out the positives, then we could set up a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/Journaling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">journaling<\/a><\/span> task to record one <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/positivity-journal-the-easy-starting-point-to-becoming-happier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">positive<\/a><\/span> about our day, every day, for the next few weeks. That\u2019ll help us shift our mindset to a healthier one.<\/p>\n<h6 data-path-to-node=\"0\">\u00a0<\/h6>\n<h4 data-path-to-node=\"0\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Engage-instead-of-withdrawing\"\/><strong>Engage instead of withdrawing<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h4>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"0\">When our minds are telling us to withdraw from the things that are good for our wellbeing, fight that urge with everything we\u2019ve got. Don\u2019t allow ourselves to pull away from our <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/the-importance-of-a-good-quality-social-support-network\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social support network<\/a><\/span>. Don\u2019t let our <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depressed<\/a><\/span> minds trick us into thinking we\u2019re a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/feeling-like-a-burden-here-is-how-to-stop-feeling-that-way\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">burden<\/a><\/span>. Fight back, and socialise more; share our troubles with our loved ones; and do the things we\u2019re trying to talk ourselves out of doing.<\/p>\n<h6 data-path-to-node=\"0\">\u00a0<\/h6>\n<h4 data-path-to-node=\"20\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Behavioural-activation\"\/><strong>Behavioural activation<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h4>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"21\">Building on the idea of not letting ourselves withdraw, be aware that our thoughts, feelings, and actions interact; and we can find ourselves waiting until we \u201cfeel like it\u201d, waiting for that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/we-need-to-stop-waiting-for-the-perfect-moment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">perfect moment<\/a><\/span>. This just keeps the cycle going.<\/p>\n<h6 data-path-to-node=\"21\">\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"21\">This has always been the biggest problem with my <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a><\/span>. But there is a way to tackle this, and that\u2019s to engage in small, manageable tasks even when <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/will-discovering-your-motivational-factors-help-you-achieve-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">motivation<\/a><\/span> is low, as this creates small wins that disrupt the \u201cI can\u2019t do anything\u201d belief.<\/p>\n<h6 data-path-to-node=\"21\">\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"21\">It can also be useful to combine this with the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/mel-robbins-and-her-interesting-five-second-rule-for-motivation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">five-second rule<\/a><\/span> and the five-minute rule. With the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/mel-robbins-and-her-interesting-five-second-rule-for-motivation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">five-second rule<\/a><\/span>, we give ourselves just five seconds to take the smallest action possible to get us started, because then the completion bias can take over and keep us going.<\/p>\n<h6 data-path-to-node=\"21\">\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"21\">With the five-minute rule, we set ourselves the target of just doing five minutes of a task or <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/are-hobbies-important-and-how-can-they-make-you-happy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hobby<\/a><\/span>. Again, the completion bias should kick in and keep us going after that, or the fun of the activity itself will.<\/p>\n<h6 data-path-to-node=\"23,0\">\u00a0<\/h6>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Summary\"\/>Summary<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p>Beck\u2019s cognitive triad provides a useful framework for explaining how <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a><\/span> develops and how it can be maintained. It also helps us to understand how <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a><\/span> can be overcome, showing us several points at which to attack our <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p>However, the brain and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a><\/span> are multifaceted and often involve biological and environmental factors, some of which might be outside of our control. Such as an unhealthy work environment or the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/unwantedlife.me\/tag\/stress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stress<\/a><\/span> of going through a loss of a loved one. So although Beck\u2019s model offers effective practical tools for understanding thought patterns, such strategies, as with most psychological interventions, work best alongside professional guidance, social support, and\/or lifestyle adjustments.<\/p>\n<h6>\u00a0<\/h6>\n<p>As always, leave your feedback in the comments section below.
