Nobody\u2019s Going to Teach You<\/h2>\n<p>When I was growing up, money was barely a topic in my house.<\/p>\n<p>The only time it came up was when I asked, <em>\u201cWe\u2019re not poor, right?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And in school? Forget about it.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/media3.giphy.com\/media\/v1.Y2lkPTc5MGI3NjExZDZjcGdndjQzY2wzaTVsemd5ZnF6ZXc1c2twdGp6bW56MnVnZXIwaSZlcD12MV9pbnRlcm5hbF9naWZfYnlfaWQmY3Q9Zw\/Se2bziNDKJxpEwHYza\/giphy.gif?resize=480%2C252&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"252\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Umm, I really beg to differ m\u2019am<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Personal finance wasn\u2019t in the curriculum, so nobody told me how to budget, invest, or make my money grow on those trees lol. \ud83c\udf33<\/p>\n<h3>The truth is: you have to seek out this knowledge yourself.<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Read the books<\/li>\n<li>Watch the YouTube videos<\/li>\n<li>Listen to the podcasts<\/li>\n<li>Decide that you\u2019re going to change your financial \u2728destiny\u2728 and then take the initiative to learn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>No one is coming.<\/p>\n<p>And nobody is going to do it for you.<\/p>\n<p>But the good news is, once you decide to learn, it\u2019s incredibly empowering.<\/p>\n<p>So do it!!<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>2. Pay Yourself First<\/h2>\n<p><strong><span style=\"background-color: #faebdc;\">One of the biggest game-changers: learning to pay myself first.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every time money comes in, give a portion of it to future you.<\/p>\n<p>That might mean:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Investing in index funds<\/li>\n<li>Putting cash into a high-yield savings account<\/li>\n<li>Contributing to retirement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t matter if you can only save $5, it\u2019s better than zero.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, those small amounts will compound and grow. \ud83d\udcb8<\/p>\n<p>Paying yourself first is the foundation of building a rich (cozy) life.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>3. It\u2019s Not About Earning More, It\u2019s About Keeping More<\/h2>\n<p>I used to think financial freedom meant hitting six figures or becoming a millionaire overnight.<\/p>\n<p>Bah! Wrong again! \ud83d\ude48<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"background-color: #faebdc;\">What I know now: it\u2019s less about how much you earn, and more about how much you keep.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Live below your means<\/li>\n<li>Spend less than you earn<\/li>\n<li>Budget what you have wisely<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When you spend less and save more, you build wealth faster than any big salary could give ya.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>4. Start Investing Early (Even if It\u2019s Just $5)<\/h2>\n<p>If there\u2019s one thing I really wish I understood in my twenties, it\u2019s that weird term\u2026<strong><em><span style=\"background-color: #faebdc;\">compound interest.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Compound interest is your best friend, your bestie!<\/p>\n<p><em>(But only if you start now.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Even small, consistent contributions to an index fund or retirement account in your 20s can grow into something massive by the time you retire.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t start until later, and kiiinda I regret it.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not too late, lovely.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you\u2019re 30, 40, or 50, you can still start now<em> (like to-day).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"background-color: #faebdc;\">The point of this story: don\u2019t wait. Even $5 invested today is better than $0 invested ever.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>5. Build an Emergency Fund<\/h2>\n<p>Life is going to happen.<\/p>\n<p>Your pet needs surgery, your car breaks down, your job suddenly disappears. \ud83d\udc4b<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Most people don\u2019t have $1,000 saved for an emergency.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>That is no good-oh.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"background-color: #faebdc;\">Set up a separate savings account and start stashing away until you have at least 3 months of living expenses.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Having an emergency fund will give you peace of mind and reduce so much financial stress.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll feel safer making bold decisions, like <strong>quitting your job to pursue your creative business,<\/strong>\u00a0when you know you have a safety net.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>6. Track Your Money (Don\u2019t Ignore \u2018Em)<\/h2>\n<p>In my twenties, I avoided looking at my bank account like the plague.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d swipe my card and just\u2026 hope for the best. \ud83e\udd1e<\/p>\n<p><em>Um, that\u2019s not really a plan, Mia\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now, I check in with my accounts regularly <em>(weekly and monthly).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I track what\u2019s coming in and what\u2019s going out.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"background-color: #faebdc;\">I schedule a money date with myself at the beginning of each month to review it all.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ya can\u2019t control what you don\u2019t track.<\/p>\n<p><em>Knowledge is power. Awareness is the first step to change.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(Someone wise said this, and now I can\u2019t remember who.) ^^<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>7. Wealth Isn\u2019t About Stuff<\/h2>\n<p>A luxury car, a designer bag, or even a big house doesn\u2019t mean someone is wealthy.<\/p>\n<p>It just means they spent money. \ud83d\ude05<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"background-color: #faebdc;\">True wealth is your net worth \u2192 what you own, what you\u2019ve saved, what you\u2019ve invested.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So don\u2019t get caught up in appearances.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, focus on saving, investing, and creating value because <strong><em>that\u2019s<\/em><\/strong> the stuff that builds true financial freedom.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>8.
