Spice Watch:<\/h4>\n

About a month ago, I posted an article, Why You Should Cautiously Worry About Grocery Prices<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

While I\u2019d never consider myself an alarmist, there are some grocery items I\u2019m watching a little more closely right now.<\/p>\n

Imported spices are high on that list.<\/p>\n

This article is the first in a short series explaining what I\u2019m watching, why I\u2019m watching it, and how I\u2019m adjusting my own buying habits.<\/p>\n

Why I\u2019m Paying Attention to Spices<\/h2>\n

Many of the spices we use every day travel thousands of miles before they ever reach our kitchens. Unlike flour or sugar, they\u2019re often imported from just a handful of countries, including India, Vietnam, Indonesia, China, Sri Lanka, and Madagascar.<\/p>\n

That means their prices aren\u2019t determined only by what happens at your local grocery store.<\/p>\n

Weather, shipping costs, exchange rates, tariffs, crop failures, and changing trade policies can all affect what importers pay. Those higher costs don\u2019t always show up immediately. Importers and distributors often have inventory purchased months earlier or contracts already in place, so today\u2019s shelf price may reflect decisions that were made months ago.<\/p>\n

Over time, though, higher import costs usually put upward pressure on spice prices.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what I am paying a little closer attention to this year.<\/p>\n

What I\u2019m Doing<\/h2>\n

Normally, I buy many of my spices during the annual spring spice sales or when holiday baking promotions begin in the fall.<\/p>\n

This year, I\u2019m making one small change.<\/p>\n

Instead of waiting for the best sales, I\u2019m checking my pantry now. If I see a good, not necessarily perfect, price on the spices I use most, I\u2019ll pick them up as I find them.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not panic buying.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m simply adjusting my buying cycle.<\/p>\n

Buy Whole When You Can<\/h2>\n

Whenever practical, I buy whole spices instead of ground.<\/p>\n

Whole peppercorns, cumin seed, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and whole nutmeg stay flavorful much longer than their ground counterparts. Grinding them as needed gives you better flavor and extends the life of your pantry.<\/p>\n

Store Them Like an Investment<\/h2>\n

A spice isn\u2019t a bargain if it loses its flavor before you use it.<\/p>\n

Store spices in a cool, dark cupboard away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. That means not next to or above your oven, microwave, or refrigerator.<\/p>\n

Whole spices can remain flavorful for several years, while ground spices gradually lose potency sooner.<\/p>\n

Garlic Is One I\u2019m Watching Closely<\/h2>\n

Anyone who knows me knows I\u2019m a \u201cif one clove is good, four or maybe five are better\u201d<\/em> kind of gal. So when I see warning signs around garlic, I pay attention.<\/p>\n

Several factors have come together over the last year.<\/p>\n

The weather has affected garlic crops in parts of California and other growing regions around the world. China, which produces roughly 70 to 75 percent of the world\u2019s garlic, has also experienced production and supply issues. Since so much of the world\u2019s garlic comes from China, changes there ripple throughout the global market.<\/p>\n

The result?<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t expect empty shelves.<\/p>\n
