Sparkling wine from Ventiventi<\/i><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

With wine glasses ready and chilled bottles at hand, I eagerly logged in to my meeting. This was no ordinary Zoom call, but a virtual tasting that would transport me halfway around the world to Italy\u2019s Modena region.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Modena holds a special place in its country\u2019s history. The roots reach back to prehistory, with Etruscan and Boli settlements before the Romans arrived and founded the colony of Mutina. The city was weakened after the fall of the Roman Empire, but it evaded ignominy by escaping destruction at the hands of Attila\u2019s barbarian horde. Legend has it that a miraculous fog hid Mutina from Attila\u2019s forces.<\/span><\/p>\n

The region lies between the Secchia and Panaro rivers, creating a fertile valley ideal for agriculture. Indeed, Modena DOP Balsamic Vinegar is a connoisseur\u2019s delight and only comes from this unique region. It is aged for at least 12 years, concentrated, and extremely expensive.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dubbed Motor Valley, the city of Modena and its province are home to Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, and De Tomaso, making it a global automotive hub. This day, I would be focused not on supercars, but on the precision and elegance of sparkling wines from Ventiventi. Ventiventi, which began operations in 2020, is located in Medolla, part of the Modena province and situated in the heart of the Emilia-Romagna wine region.<\/span><\/p>\n

Riccardo, Vittoria, and Andrea Razzaboni<\/i><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

At Ventiventi, three brothers, Riccardo, Andrea and Tommaso Razzaboni, are guiding a young, independent winery with a clear vision: to produce wines that are expressions of the land while actively protecting the natural resources that make them possible. Ventiventi embraces sustainability not as a marketing ploy, but as an ethical commitment.<\/span><\/p>\n

To obtain a pure expression of Modenese terroir, organic practices are needed. Both the vineyard and winery are certified organic. Synthetic chemicals are not used, and instead Ventiventi works to cultivate a healthy soil that works with nature, rather than against it. Vines can develop stronger natural defenses and more expressive fruit. Precision irrigation reduces water consumption, and solar cells power the winery operation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Indigenous varieties such as Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce, Lambrusco di Sorbara, Ancellotta and Pignoletto form the basis of the estate\u2019s identity, and are closely tied to the history and character of the Modenese territory. For their flagship wines, the brothers decided to focus on traditional method (Metodo Classico) sparkling wine with extended aging on the lees (30 to 50 months).<\/span><\/p>\n

When I was told our tasting would focus on three sparkling wines made with Lambrusco, I flashed back to the clunky Lambrusco flooding the stores in the 1970s and 1980s, such as Riunite. These wines were cheaply made and sweetened to mask flaws and appeal to the mass market. Even as wineries in Modena and Emilia-Romagna switched to dry, complex, and traditional styles, the marketplace lagged, continuing to stock the industrial-type Lambrusco.<\/span><\/p>\n

During our tasting, Andrea and Riccardo set me straight. The Lambrusco grape wasn\u2019t the culprit. In fact, Lambrusco is a family of grapes, with each providing a different flavor profile and characteristics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The most delicate and floral of the Lambrusco family is Lambrusco Sorbara, used in Ventiventi\u2019s premium Metodo Classico wines. It is prized for its elegance and freshness \u2013 a far cry from the mass-produced Lambrusco from my college days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gladly, I poured the first wine into a flute as Riccardo led us through a tasting of three sparkling Ventiventi wines, each made with a different method. All three display the authenticity and precision of Ventiventi winemaking.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Brut Ros\u00e9 Metodo Classico, Lambrusco di Modena DOC – This superb wine would be at home at any gourmet meal. It is a more evolved expression of Lambrusco. Creamy foam and a fresh floral aroma appear upon opening. The wine, which ages 50 months on lees, has a bracing acidity and flowing minerality. Soft pink in color, it has elegance and structure that truly surprises. This is perfect for delicate dishes and seafood.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    La Vie Metodo Charmat, Lambrusco di Modena DOC – This wine is softer than the Ros\u00e9, with less acidity and minerality. Made with the Charmat (or tank) method, La Vie has fine bubbles but is less persistent than a traditional method sparkling wine. The magenta color captures the eye; the aroma has strawberry and raspberry highlights. This is a juicy wine that ends with a soft finish. 10.5% ABV.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Happy Selvaggio Ancestrale – This pet-nat wine is the most natural expression of the Sorbara grape. The organic, minimal-intervention winemaking ensures nothing gets between you and the grape. Bubblegum pink and slightly cloudy in the bottle, the wine has a respectable mousse. Flavors of strawberry and grapefruit predominate. The 12 different labels are produced in collaboration with AstronaveLab, an association that works with children with disabilities. This is a playful wine topped with a crown cap.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    You can expect to pay between $20 and $45 for Ventiventi wines. The lower price range is for entry-level and Ancestral wines (a bargain!). The top prices apply to the Metodo Classico and single varietal wines.<\/span><\/p>\n

    I\u2019ve been schooled! The tasting drastically altered my perception of Lambrusco. This ancient grape, especially grown with organic and sustainable methods, can produce wines with the finesse of a ballet dancer. <\/span><\/p>\n

    Ventiventi is a boutique producer with no broad distribution yet in the US; however, there are several high-quality Lambrusco producers from Modena that are readily available. You are encouraged to taste them and discover the new face of Modena Lambrusco.<\/span><\/p>\n
