Director Michael Peter Bolus<\/a> and writer Greg McGowen<\/a> present the 2026 film A Sense of Dread<\/em><\/strong>. This is a must see psychological thriller that delivers. Not one single thing about this story feels right. A specialist team sent to clear older computers of data, rewiring some things and destroying others. The four men are disparate individuals. <\/p>\n

A Sense of Dread Story<\/h2>\n

A group of four technicians are hired to clear an old data collection site. This are is out in the middle of nowhere. It appears to be a desert location and very isolated. Not too dissimilar to the Antarctic, out of the four men; Mac is the de facto leader. The men uneasily bond and try to find the site\u2019s secrets. All the while their little group head toward implosion. <\/p>\n

The Cast<\/h2>\n

Jodi Thelen<\/a> is the interviewer. <\/p>\n

Kevin McCorkle<\/a> is Samuels.<\/p>\n

Michael Peter Bolus<\/a> is Michaels.<\/p>\n

Michael Town<\/a> is O\u2019Neel.<\/p>\n

Greg McGowen<\/a> is Mac.<\/p>\n

Daria Volynska<\/a> is woman in black.<\/p>\n

A Sense of Dread Works<\/h2>\n

The film makes use of the isolated location and the almost analogue feel to the place they end up and the Spartan-like atmosphere keeps us glued to the screen. These \u201cmiddle aged\u201d men all have a feel of, \u201cBeen there. Done that and got the T-shirt.\u201d Each one has their own demons and this pared down existence, forces each person to retreat into their own thoughts. <\/p>\n

And memories.<\/p>\n

This is not too dissimilar to The Thing<\/em><\/strong>, whether it be the John Carpenter original remake of the James Arness 1951 creature feature, or the 2011 \u201cprequel<\/a>.\u201d The isolated setting could hark to other remote \u201cunpeopled\u201d territory. The Hateful Eight <\/a><\/strong><\/em>(2015) is also set in a \u201cdeserted\u201d snow covered setting. *I actually felt that the Tarantino film is a long homage to The Thing<\/strong><\/em>; the original, not the CGI heavy remake. *<\/p>\n

Isolation brings A Sense of Dread<\/em><\/strong> eventually into some areas of serious misgivings. Perhaps not overtly as it feels like a natural buildup of tension. <\/p>\n

A Sense of Dread Low Key Buildup<\/h2>\n

The characters each have their own \u201crow to hoe.\u201d One gets the impression that these men were chosen for their ability to get on with it. They do try, despite the subtle unraveling of the mission and their minds. Mac, the leader of this small group, watches what appears to be a log. Not too dissimilar to Event Horizon<\/a> or Serenity<\/a>, this video log is not full of good news. This also adds to the palpable sense of dread. <\/p>\n

The woman making the log felt like a nod to the Reaver storyline in Serenity<\/strong><\/em>. To me it felt like a wink to the 2005 closure film. Sure the effect in the earlier film is almost over the top dramatic, but this one felt right<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Behind the Camera<\/h2>\n

A Sense of Dread<\/em><\/strong> features a finite cast. Two of which wear dual hats. Bolus actually wears three; Director, Actor and Producer. McGovern wrote the screenplay and also donned the actor\u2019s cap. Bolus manages to juggle his directing duties and tread those boards. <\/p>\n

Brandon Ross<\/a> is cinematographer. It is his work that helps Bolus to sell this story. Editor Joelle Brianne Graham<\/a> handles the slicing and dicing to make everything run to form. <\/p>\n

*To Form: The form being chaotic and claustrophobic and full of dread.*<\/p>\n

Kristin Bolus<\/a> provides a soundtrack that fits and the production\/art design is spot on. Each shot is full of a ramshackle pastiche of \u201cold\u201d technology and the things surrounding them.<\/p>\n

The Verdict<\/h2>\n

In some ways, A Sense of Dread<\/em><\/strong> feels like a kissing cousin to the 2026 dark comedic horror; Cold Storage<\/em><\/strong>. However, each film has things that make them work wonderfully. The subtle sets of A Sense of Dread<\/strong><\/em> and the tendency to lean more towards psychological thriller, keeps this one in its own lane, quite handily. <\/p>\n

I can give this film a solid 5 out of 5 stars. Everything hits just right. Acting, the story, the writing and everything else make this one to look out for. *One thing I look for in a film is \u201cwatchability.\u201d* <\/p>\n

A Sense of Dread <\/em><\/strong>has it. <\/p>\n
