{"id":360844,"date":"2026-07-31T23:16:46","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T23:16:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/uncategorized\/labour-wins-decisive-victory-in-greater-manchester-mayoral-byelection-mayoral-elections\/"},"modified":"2026-07-31T23:16:46","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T23:16:46","slug":"labour-wins-decisive-victory-in-greater-manchester-mayoral-byelection-mayoral-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=360844","title":{"rendered":"Labour wins decisive victory in Greater Manchester mayoral byelection | Mayoral elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Labour has stormed to a decisive victory in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/greater-manchester\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Greater Manchester<\/a> mayoral byelection, seizing back areas that recently fell to Reform UK and the Greens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Labour\u2019s Bev Craig, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/manchester\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Manchester<\/a> city council leader, will now succeed Andy Burnham and hold one of the most powerful political positions outside Westminster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Labour won 47% of first-preference votes, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/brexit-party\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Reform UK<\/a> way behind on 21% and the Greens in third on 12%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The contest took place under the supplementary vote system, meaning that, as no candidate achieved more than 50%, voters\u2019 second preferences were counted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">When voters\u2019 second choices were counted and other parties were eliminated, Labour\u2019s share rose to 66.3% and Reform UK\u2019s to 33.7%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">In her victory speech at Co-op Live in Manchester, Craig urged society to \u201cmove away from divisive politics that try to pit neighbour against neighbour\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The scale of the victory is a significant boost for the new prime minister, suggesting Labour can win back both left- and right-leaning voters who deserted the party under Keir Starmer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">It also poses troubling questions for Nigel Farage, whose party has surrendered its year-long lead in the national polls and is in a deepening crisis over questions about its funding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">A poll last month had Labour and Reform UK virtually neck and neck in the battle for the mayoralty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">In the May elections, Farage\u2019s party won more than 100 seats across Greater Manchester, including all but one of the 25 up for grabs in Wigan \u2013 the borough of Burnham\u2019s new constituency \u2013 and 18 out of 19 in Tameside, both once solidly Labour areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">However, Farage scuppered the party\u2019s mayoral campaign when he announced he was standing down as an MP in order to fight a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/jul\/29\/nigel-farage-come-clean-or-clear-off-voters-clacton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">self-imposed parliamentary byelection<\/a> in Clacton after scrutiny over his funding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Before the result was officially declared, Labour sources said it had won in every ward in boroughs including Bury, Tameside and all but one Trafford, where both Reform UK and the Greens made inroads in May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">In Oldham, where Reform UK gained 13 councillors and ended Labour\u2019s 15-year grip on power two months ago, Labour won 17 of the 20 wards in the mayoral contest, it is understood. Sources said Labour had won every ward in Gorton and Denton, the constituency won by the Green party\u2019s Hannah Spencer in February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">One senior Labour source said it looked as if Reform UK had \u201cmassively underperformed\u201d and that the result was a combination of Burnham\u2019s prime ministership signalling \u201cyou can vote Labour again\u201d and voters feeling confident they could vote for Craig.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Speaking from the podium after the result was announced just after 11pm on Friday, Craig said that during the campaign she had met \u201cfantastic people doing incredible things against the odds every single day \u2013 rejecting the politics of hate but standing with their neighbours, looking out for each other\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">For the Greens, which won 7% of the vote against Burnham when the Greater Manchester mayoralty was last contested in 2024, the result may be a disappointment after its recent electoral successes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Geraldine Coggins, the Green party candidate, said she was pleased with its campaign and that there had been a \u201csurge\u201d of support for the party under Zack Polanski\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">She claimed the result was \u201cnot a ringing endorsement\u201d of Craig, comparing her 47% vote share with Burnham who<strong> <\/strong>never won less than 60% of the vote in each of his three victories since 2017.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"0fc17119-a0c7-4eed-ac1d-c8a86af7b168\" data-spacefinder-role=\"richLink\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-1oq85qr\"><gu-island name=\"RichLinkComponent\" priority=\"feature\" deferuntil=\"idle\" props=\"{&quot;richLinkIndex&quot;:18,&quot;element&quot;:{&quot;_type&quot;:&quot;model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement&quot;,&quot;prefix&quot;:&quot;Related: &quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;\u2018This is the dream job\u2019: Labour\u2019s Bev Craig on the battle to be Greater Manchester mayor&quot;,&quot;elementId&quot;:&quot;0fc17119-a0c7-4eed-ac1d-c8a86af7b168&quot;,&quot;role&quot;:&quot;richLink&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2026\/jul\/26\/manchester-mayor-battle-bev-craig-burnham-labour-reform-greens&quot;},&quot;ajaxUrl&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/api.nextgen.guardianapps.co.uk&quot;,&quot;format&quot;:{&quot;design&quot;:0,&quot;display&quot;:0,&quot;theme&quot;:0}}\"\/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThe fact this has even gone to the second round is devastating for them,\u201d Coggins said. \u201cTo have lost this much support in the honeymoon period of a new prime minister is not a positive sign for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The contest was triggered by Burnham <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/jun\/19\/andy-burnham-avoids-press-queries-staff-no-doubts-makerfield\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">winning the Makerfield byelection<\/a> on 18 June, meaning he had to step down as mayor of the most powerful combined authority outside London.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The byelection was the biggest contest of its kind in British political history, with more than 2 million eligible voters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">However, the turnout was down on previous Greater Manchester mayoral contests \u2013 only 25%, the third lowest of any mayoral byelection to date \u2013 due to a combination of low voter awareness and it taking place in the summer holidays.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Labour has stormed to a decisive victory in the Greater Manchester mayoral byelection, seizing back areas that recently fell to Reform UK and the Greens.
