What does it mean to overcome something.\u00a0 How do you know when you have overcome something? What is a person that overcomes, characterized by?<\/p>\n

The dictionaries define \u201covercoming\u201d as \u201cgetting the better of a struggle or conflict<\/strong>; to defeat or overcome an enemy<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0 We as believers, certainly do have an enemy: one that prowls around looking for those he can destroy. (1 Peter 5:8)\u00a0 To overcome in this case, is to beat the enemy<\/strong> at his game.\u00a0 To win! It is to put the devil in his rightful position.<\/p>\n

The dictionaries also define \u201covercoming\u201d as prevailing over opposition, debility or temptation<\/strong>.\u00a0 It is the end result of a process of overcoming a weakness of one\u2019s own character<\/strong>.\u00a0 For some of us, the struggle is inside of us, like those with a long illness, depression or addictions.\u00a0 Each day, not allowing these situations to win, is overcoming!<\/p>\n

Finally, the dictionaries define \u201covercoming\u201d as the process to win, conquer or gain victory<\/strong>, a process that has a plan to overcome<\/strong> by whatever means possible.\u00a0 This speaks not just of a state of overcoming, but an attitude of overcoming.<\/p>\n

So what does a person who is an \u2018Over-comer\u2019 look like?<\/p>\n

  1. An \u2018Over-comer\u2019 asks \u201cWho can I count on?\u201d<\/strong> They refuse to be give in to the realities of their situation, but instead choose to look at Who can help<\/strong>.\u00a0 David had an overcoming attitude.\u00a0 If you look at the opening lines of various psalms, it is clear that he knew Who to ask for help.\u00a0 Psalm 121:1 \u201cI lift up my eyes to the hills \u2013 where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 In Psalm 141:1 \u201cO Lord, I call to you, come quickly to me. Hear my voice when I call to you.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 In Psalm 25:1 \u201cTo you, O Lord, I lift up my soul, in you I trust, O My God.\u201d\u00a0 <\/em>A person who regularly overcomes is a person that knows to come to God for help.<\/li>\n
  2. \u2018Over-comers\u2019 choose to become enthralled by the nature of God.<\/strong> They don\u2019t let their circumstances and their struggles get bigger and better than their God, their God is always more powerful than anything they face.<\/strong>\u00a0 David tells us in Psalm 20:7-8, \u201cSome trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.\u00a0 They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 He knew this, because the Lord had done just that in 2 Sam 10 when he had to face the Ammonites, their chariots and all the nations that joined with them.\u00a0 Hezekiah also knew that His God was bigger than any army in 2 Chron 32:7-8, he said: \u201cDo not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him.\u00a0 With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us and fight our battles.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 The Lord then sent one angel to wipe out the Ammonite army. These are two examples of men who face devastating odds, but choose to worship a God bigger than their circumstances<\/strong>.\u00a0 An overcomer does not just turn to God for help, but knows God\u2019s character and person to be greater than their circumstances.<\/li>\n
  3. \u2018Over-comers\u2019 are on a journey to win.\u00a0 <\/strong>Even though they may not be experiencing their victory right now, they understand that they are on a journey towards overcoming.\u00a0 They know God always has a plan, and choose to move forward despite what they see around them. This is because \u2018Over-comers\u2019 know they are new creations<\/strong> and that they are created to become \u2018Over- comers\u2019<\/strong>.\u00a0 So they look forward towards that and journey on.\u00a0 Paul is very clear in Romans 8:28,37<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \u201cAnd we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him who have been called according to His purpose\u2026.No, in all these things we are more than conquerors though him who love us.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    1. \u2018Over-comers\u2019 are good at forgetting and reaching<\/strong>: forgetting what is past, or done and reaching forward to an overcoming future. (Phil 3:13-14) They do not allow themselves to dwell on what has happened to bring them to their current situation; instead they look to what God is going to do in the future<\/strong>.\u00a0 Joseph knew about betrayal, slavery, being wrongly accused, thrown into prison, but still looked to what God was doing, saying: \u201cwhat Satan meant for harm, God meant for good.\u201d\u00a0 <\/em>This willingness not to dwell in the past, but look to a future is their overcoming attitude.<\/li>\n
    2. Finally \u2018Over-comers\u2019 look to who they can help<\/strong>, they focus on helping others because they themselves are acquainted with sorrow, pain and suffering. They seek to comfort others<\/strong> because of the comfort they themselves have received from God.\u00a0 They also know that comforting others is part of their journey to overcome.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      \u201c\u2026who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.\u00a0 If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer.\u201d 2 Cor 1:4-6<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

      \"counting-on-God2\"<\/a>\u2018Over-comers\u2019 know that just as God identifies with our own sorrows, we can identify with the sorrows of others and provide comfort to them on behalf of Christ.<\/p>\n\n
