It\u2019s a commitment that has transplanted the owner from a chance to work as a New York lawyer to an expert in cold-climate wine, 90 minutes outside Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dig-1hicw9p1_4-3-1 dig-1hicw9p0_4-3-1 dig-ekabin0_4-3-1 dig-Theme-vis2023 dig-Theme-vis2023--dark dig-Mode--dark In-Theme-Provider\" style=\"display: contents;\"><span style=\"display: contents;\"><span style=\"display: contents;\"><span class=\"dig-1hicw9p1_4-3-1 dig-1hicw9p0_4-3-1 dig-ekabin0_4-3-1 dig-Theme-vis2023 dig-Theme-vis2023--dark dig-Mode--dark In-Theme-Provider\" style=\"display: contents;\">Matt Fowles does have a family history in farming, but like so many others, over successive generations, the land was whittled down. That meant Matt grew up in the city and chose to study commercial law. \u201cWe dreamed of going to London or New York like a lot of professional couples might. Image: Matt Fowles<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He found a winery that had gone broke and called his wife to see if they could ditch the big international city plans and move to Avenel. \u201cShe was like, \u2018What? Where?\u2019. Avenel isn\u2019t London or New York. It was a population of about 700 people at the time. And frankly, I think it\u2019s a lot better than either. As it turns out, the legal training has helped the business and his wife\u2019s background as a graphic designer is making for some spectacular wine labels.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>This was the first foray into wine for me. I happen to love wine. It\u2019s a genuine passion.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Rest assured, the vineyard is no longer broke, but Matt says Mother Nature<br \/>tormented them for the first few years. Between drought, smoke and record heat, the challenges were coming thick and fast. \u201cI remember having a conversation with my wife saying, \u2018Darling, I think I\u2019ve buggered it up\u2019. Image: Fowles Wine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Then came the vintage of 2010. Matt describes it as \u2013 The Vintage from Heaven. \u201cIt was the most, still probably my favourite vintage.\u201d Thankfully, Matt has a healthy respect for nature, and it shows in the way the farm is managed. The climate has helped immensely with the prevention of disease, thanks to very little frost and a constant breeze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe advocacy side of things is definitely something that I\u2019ve been surrounded with growing up.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong><strong>Breeze strips moisture. Moisture is the vector of disease. So, we don\u2019t have a lot of disease pressure.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Bees are also a feature on the farm, which help with pollination. There are insectariums that also house pollinator and predator insects, to foster balance. Perhaps what Fowles is best known for, is their microbats. These insect-eating bats can be as small as a thumbnail, and it\u2019s hoped will have a significant impact on reducing predatory moths. \u201cIf we can get that going across the industry, there\u2019s the potential to save $50 million dollars a year in spray.\u201d The bats can consume 30 to 100% of their body weight a day, that could be up to a kilo each day.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s very exciting research and we are right at the front edge.\u201d<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"520\" height=\"85\" src=\"https:\/\/farmers.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Photo-20-5-2024-3-03-50-PM.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20535\" style=\"width:650px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/farmers.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Photo-20-5-2024-3-03-50-PM.jpg 520w, https:\/\/farmers.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Photo-20-5-2024-3-03-50-PM-300x49.jpg 300w, https:\/\/farmers.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Photo-20-5-2024-3-03-50-PM-370x60.jpg 370w, https:\/\/farmers.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Photo-20-5-2024-3-03-50-PM-270x44.jpg 270w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>One of Matt\u2019s mantras is to, farm in nature\u2019s image, and their recent vintage <em>Fieldsong<\/em> certainly does that. \u201cIt\u2019s like the bees. They fly around and forage all sorts of different flowers, then they come back to the hive and make honey. Fieldsong is a bit like that,\u201d he explains. \u201cWe go out, graze all the different grape varieties from red to white and blend them. It\u2019s called a field blend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Visitors are welcome to sample the wines and some local produce at the farm restaurant which is proud of its zero food waste philosophy whereby chickens eat the scraps, and the eggs are available for guests to collect. \u201cIt\u2019s nice to sort of close the loop, if you like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matt says, the most common misconception about working in wine, is that everyone thinks he swans around drinking it all day.
