Mukwonago, Wisconsin (pronounced muck\u2011WONN\u2011a\u2011go) isn\u2019t the sort of place you\u2019d expect to find one of the Midwest\u2019s strongest arcade lineups, but that\u2019s exactly what Vintage Vault Arcade delivers. A recent visit to Milwaukee (for the Midwest Gaming Classic event) allowed me to take some time out to find this arcade that I\u2019d heard good things about. <\/p>\n

Its off the beaten track somewhat, and faces Phantom Lake \u2013 sitting on a truly spectacular spot. It\u2019s an unassuming location, but once you step inside, the scale and quality of the collection become obvious immediately.<\/p>\n

With Vintage Vault Arcade owner James Srnec!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n

Vintage Vault is run by James Srnec, a collector who didn\u2019t just fall into the hobby \u2014 he went all\u2011in. His first machine was a rare Ms. Pac\u2011Man<\/em> Cabaret, and from there the collection exploded. At one point he had more than 70 cabinets between his house and storage, to the extent that entire floors of his home were effectively a private arcade. After renting games to local arcade bars, he decided to open Vintage Vault in late 2022, choosing Mukwonago for its family\u2011friendly foot traffic and community feel.<\/p>\n

The arcade features both pinball and video game machines, dating from late 70s right up to the present day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n

The arcade operates on a simple model: $20 for all\u2011day access, with re\u2011entry allowed. Hours vary seasonally, but the core schedule is Friday\u2013Sunday, noon to 10pm, with expanded weekday hours in summer. You pay at a small table near the entrance, and everything is on free\u2011play or fitted with credit buttons. No tokens, no quarters, no friction.<\/p>\n

Pinball is very well represented. Older Bally\/Williams machines like No Good Gofers, Theatre of Magic<\/em>, and The Champion Pub<\/em> sit alongside modern Stern and Jersey Jack titles including Elton John, JAWS<\/em>, and my favourite pin, The Wizard of Oz<\/em>. The mix is balanced, and everything is kept in good working order.<\/p>\n

The space itself is functional rather than themed. White walls, a large VV logo, standard overhead lighting \u2014 none of the forced \u201cretro aesthetic\u201d you see in barcades trying to recreate an 80s movie set. And honestly, it doesn\u2019t need any of that. When you have 100\u2013150 machines running in good condition, the cabinets provide all the atmosphere you need. The room feels like a proper neighborhood arcade: bright enough to see what you\u2019re doing, loud enough to feel alive, and laid out sensibly.<\/p>\n

Vintage Vault\u2019s collection spans the late 1970s through to modern oddities, and it hits all the categories that matter. The \u201cbaseline\u201d classics are here: Pac\u2011Man, Donkey Kong, Dig Dug, Joust, Defender, Qbert, Frogger<\/em>, and more. These are the titles that anchor any serious arcade, and they\u2019re present, working, and well\u2011maintained.<\/p>\n

Then come the rarities \u2014 the machines that separate a collector\u2019s arcade from a generic lineup. Vintage Vault has a cabaret Satan\u2019s Hollow<\/em>, a four\u2011player Japanese Pac\u2011Man<\/em>, Contra: Evolution, Ninja Baseball Bat Man, Mission Craft, Mystic Marathon<\/em>, and a long list of less common 90s JAMMA titles. Some are curiosities, some are genuinely great games, and some are interesting failures \u2014 but that\u2019s exactly what makes a collection worth exploring. You don\u2019t go to a real arcade to play only the hits.<\/p>\n

Some nice rarities here. Wacko and the always fun Food Fight are the highlights here<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n

The 90s section is strong, with Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, The Simpsons, Rampage World Tour, Area 51, Bucky O\u2019Hare, Battletoads, Marvel vs. Capcom<\/em>, and more. Many are housed in custom art packages, something that\u2019s becoming more common in enthusiast\u2011run arcades. It adds personality without drifting into theme\u2011park territory.<\/p>\n

Maintenance is where Vintage Vault really stands out. Srnec wipes down every machine daily and performs monthly inspections across the entire line up. He handles most repairs himself, sometimes spending ten hours on a single issue. He openly admits he doesn\u2019t play the games much anymore \u2014 he\u2019s too busy watching for things to break. That\u2019s the mindset of a collector, not a casual operator, and it shows. During visits, only a couple of machines tend to be down, and even those are usually mid\u2011repair rather than abandoned.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m always happy to see a Mad Planets on the floor of any arcade. Seeing a Journey in the flesh is always a treat!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n

Gameplay quality is consistently high. Controls feel right, monitors look good, and nothing seems to be limping along. Even the more obscure titles \u2014 the ones most arcades would leave half\u2011working \u2014 are dialled in. It\u2019s the sort of place where you can play Robotron <\/em>and Smash TV<\/em> the way they\u2019re meant to be played, then wander over to something you\u2019ve never heard of and trust that it\u2019ll work properly.<\/p>\n

Its great to see Vintage Vault Arcade cater for the enthusiast. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever seen a dedicated Agent X before<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n

Vintage Vault also hosts pinball tournaments on the last Sunday of each month, offers private parties, and maintains an active Facebook page where Srnec posts repair logs, new arrivals, and general updates. There\u2019s no food service, but you\u2019re welcome to bring your own, and there\u2019s a small outdoor seating area. Parking is free and easy.<\/p>\n

The only real limitation is space \u2014 and that\u2019s already being addressed. Srnec plans to move the arcade into a larger venue so he can put every machine he owns on the floor at once, rather than rotating them. He also wants to add physical games like skee\u2011ball and basketball shooters. Given the current quality of the operation, the expansion should only make the experience stronger.<\/p>\n

Vintage Vault Arcade has the feel of a genuine old\u2011school neighbourhood arcade \u2014 the kind of place you\u2019d bike to in the 80s and lose an afternoon chasing high scores. It\u2019s not a barcade, not a nostalgia trap, and not a themed attraction. It\u2019s a serious collection, maintained properly, and made accessible at a fair price. If you\u2019re anywhere near Milwaukee, it\u2019s absolutely worth the trip, and easily a 10 out of 10 from me.<\/p>\n
