The big question was when those investments would start producing clear financial returns.

Alphabet’s latest results suggest that moment may be getting closer, with faster Google Cloud growth, stronger margins, and wider use of Gemini across its products. However, rising capital spending and weaker free cash flow show that the AI buildout is still expensive.

Alphabet’s Q2 2026 Results at a Glance

Alphabet delivered strong revenue and operating growth in the second quarter, led by a sharp acceleration in Google Cloud. However, record infrastructure spending pushed quarterly free cash flow into negative territory.

Metric

Q2 2026

Year-on-Year Change

Total revenue

$119.8 billion

+24%

Operating income

$40.8 billion

+30%

Operating margin

34.0%

Up from 32.4%

Google Services revenue

$94.5 billion

+15%

Google Search and other ad revenue

$63.3 billion

+17%

Google Cloud revenue

$24.8 billion

+82%

Google Cloud operating income

$8.8 billion

More than tripled

Google Cloud operating margin

35.6%

Up from 20.7%

Capital expenditure

$44.9 billion

Nearly doubled

Operating cash flow

$39.1 billion

Strong but below capital spending

Free cash flow

Negative $5.9 billion

Down from positive $5.3 billion

The figures show why Alphabet’s quarter produced mixed signals for investors. AI demand is driving faster growth and stronger Cloud profitability, but the infrastructure needed to support that demand is consuming a growing share of the company’s cash.

Google Cloud Provides the Strongest Evidence

Google Cloud offers the clearest sign that Alphabet’s AI spending is starting to produce real financial returns. Revenue growth accelerated, profits improved, and enterprise demand remained strong during the quarter.

Cloud Revenue Accelerates

Google Cloud revenue rose 82% year on year to $24.8 billion. Growth came from AI infrastructure, core cloud services, enterprise AI products, and the first recognized sales of Google’s TPU systems.

Importantly, management said Cloud growth remained strong even without TPU hardware sales. This suggests that demand was not driven by a single product category. Businesses are spending more across Google’s wider cloud and AI ecosystem.

Cloud Profitability Improves

Google Cloud operating income increased from $2.8 billion to $8.8 billion. Its operating margin also climbed from 20.7% to 35.6%.

This improvement matters because Google Cloud was once viewed as an expensive growth business with limited profits. It is now becoming a major contributor to Alphabet’s operating income. The results also show that strong AI demand can support both revenue growth and higher margins.

Still, investors should watch whether these margins remain stable. Higher energy costs, third-party computing capacity, and continued infrastructure investment could create pressure on the stock market in future quarters.

Backlog Supports Future Revenue

Google Cloud’s backlog reached $514 billion, providing some visibility into future demand. Alphabet expects to recognize slightly more than half of this amount over the next two years.

A large backlog supports the view that enterprise demand is not limited to short-term AI experiments. Many customers are making longer-term commitments to cloud infrastructure and AI services.

Gemini Is Becoming a Commercial Ecosystem

Gemini is no longer just a consumer chatbot. It is now connected to Google Cloud, Workspace, Android, Search, and a growing range of enterprise tools. The Gemini app reached 950 million monthly active users, while more than nine million developers were using Google’s AI models.

The bigger opportunity comes from how Alphabet can turn this usage into revenue. Gemini can support subscriptions, API demand, enterprise contracts, and higher cloud consumption. Nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies were using Gemini Enterprise, which shows that adoption is moving beyond testing. The next step is proving that this activity can deliver steady, profitable revenue.

Headline Profit Overstates the Operating Improvement

Alphabet’s reported net income rose 298% to $112.1 billion, but the headline figure gives an exaggerated view of the quarter. A large part of the increase came from unrealized gains on equity investments rather than stronger performance in Search, Cloud, or other operating businesses.

These gains added about $77.1 billion to net income and may not repeat in future quarters. Excluding that benefit, Alphabet’s underlying profit would still show solid growth, but the increase would be far smaller. For this reason, investors should focus more on revenue, operating income, margins, and cash flow than the reported net income alone.

The Cost of the AI Buildout Is Rising

Alphabet’s AI progress comes with a large price tag. Capital expenditure reached $44.9 billion in the quarter, nearly double the level recorded a year earlier. Most of this spending went toward data centers, servers, chips, and other infrastructure needed to support AI products and cloud demand.

The scale of the investment also pushed quarterly free cash flow to negative $5.9 billion. Alphabet remains financially strong, but the figure shows how much cash the AI expansion is consuming. Future costs will also include higher depreciation, energy use, maintenance, and engineering expenses.

This does not mean the strategy is failing. However, Cloud and Gemini revenue will need to grow fast enough to cover these rising costs and deliver a clear return over time.

Rising Debt Changes the Financial Picture

Alphabet’s long-term debt rose sharply as the company increased spending on AI infrastructure. Borrowing is still manageable because Alphabet holds large cash reserves and generates strong operating income, but the change shows that internal cash flow alone may not cover the full scale of its expansion.

Higher debt also brings interest costs and more pressure to produce returns from new data centers and computing capacity. The main concern is not Alphabet’s ability to repay its debt. It is whether future AI profits can grow fast enough to justify the rising cost of financing the buildout.

Alphabet’s AI Strategy Compared with Other Big Tech Companies

Alphabet follows a wider AI monetization strategy than most of its competitors. Microsoft and Amazon rely heavily on cloud infrastructure and enterprise products, while Meta mainly uses AI to improve advertising and engagement. Google combines both approaches through Cloud, Gemini, Workspace, Search, and advertising.

Company

Main AI Monetization Route

Custom AI Chips

Main Strength

Main Concern

Alphabet

Google Cloud, Gemini APIs, subscriptions, Workspace, and Search advertising

TPU

AI is connected across Cloud, Search, Android, and Workspace

Heavy capital spending and negative quarterly free cash flow

Microsoft

Azure AI, Microsoft 365 Copilot, GitHub Copilot, and enterprise subscriptions

Maia

Strong combination of cloud usage and paid software products

AI infrastructure spending is putting pressure on Cloud margins

Amazon

AWS infrastructure, Bedrock, model hosting, and AI computing capacity

Trainium and Inferentia

Large cloud platform with strong demand for AI infrastructure

High investment requirements and limited available capacity

Meta

Better ad targeting, recommendations, engagement, and AI assistants

MTIA

AI can improve revenue across its existing social platforms

Returns are less direct because Meta does not operate a major public cloud business

Alphabet’s main advantage is the number of ways it can earn from AI. It can sell computing capacity through Google Cloud while using Gemini to support subscriptions, productivity tools, and its advertising business. Microsoft has already built strong paid demand around Azure and Copilot, while Amazon remains a major AI infrastructure provider through AWS and its Trainium chips. Meta’s returns are more indirect, with AI mainly supporting advertising performance and user engagement.

The comparison also shows why Alphabet’s latest Cloud results matter. Google Cloud’s 82% revenue growth and higher margins provide visible financial evidence that AI investment is producing returns. However, Alphabet’s $195 billion to $205 billion capital expenditure plan means it must continue growing faster without allowing infrastructure costs to absorb too much cash.

What Investors Should Watch Next

The next few quarters will show whether Alphabet can turn AI growth into steady returns.

Google Cloud growth needs to remain strong.

Cloud margins should stay at healthy levels.

Backlog must be converted into revenue and cash flow.

Capital spending should begin to stabilize.

Free cash flow needs to recover.

Gemini must attract more paying users.

AI Search should support advertising revenue.

Debt and depreciation costs need close attention.

For years, Google has poured billions into AI models, data centers, custom chips, and cloud infrastructure.
