{"id":358970,"date":"2026-07-30T20:15:24","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T20:15:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/airbus\/mtu-growth-plan-on-track-as-powder-metal-aogs-resolved-by-year-end\/"},"modified":"2026-07-30T20:15:24","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T20:15:24","slug":"mtu-growth-plan-on-track-as-powder-metal-aogs-resolved-by-year-end","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=358970","title":{"rendered":"MTU growth plan on track as powder-metal AOGs &#8216;resolved by year-end&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Free for nonsubscribers\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>By Thomas Blackwood<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>July 30, 2026, \u00a9 Leeham News:<\/strong> Revenue and profits at Germany\u2019s MTU Aero Engines were up in the first half of 2026, driven by a strong order book and new maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) contracts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/leehamnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/MTU_Aero_Engines_Logo.svg_.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"146\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-43140 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/leehamnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/MTU_Aero_Engines_Logo.svg_-300x146.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/leehamnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/MTU_Aero_Engines_Logo.svg_-300x146.png 300w, https:\/\/leehamnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/MTU_Aero_Engines_Logo.svg_-1024x498.png 1024w, https:\/\/leehamnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/MTU_Aero_Engines_Logo.svg_-768x374.png 768w, https:\/\/leehamnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/MTU_Aero_Engines_Logo.svg_-960x467.png 960w, https:\/\/leehamnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/MTU_Aero_Engines_Logo.svg_.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"\/><\/a>MTU\u2019s first-half results, published on Thursday, showed adjusted revenue grew to \u20ac4.7 billion, up by 13% from \u20ac4.1 billion in the first six months of 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adjusted operating profit stood at \u20ac692 million for the period, 5% higher than in the first half of 2025 when it reached \u20ac657 million.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the adjusted EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) margin fell slightly, to 14.8% compared with 15.9% in the prior-year period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>No impact from Middle East conflict\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking to investors, Johannes Bussmann, MTU\u2019s chief executive, warned of a volatile situation in the Middle East, but said the company\u2019s growth trajectory \u201cremains on track, underpinned by our strong and balanced portfolio of engines.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MTU produces engines for narrowbody and widebody airframes, with a large section of its market dominated by the Pratt &amp; Whitney geared turbofan (GTF) engine\u2014which powers roughly two-fifths of Airbus A320neo family aircraft operating globally, as well as Airbus A220s and Embraer E-Jets\u2014and the IAE V2500 for the A320ceo family.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite its exposure to geopolitical instability, Bussman said: \u201cThe conflict in the Middle East has not impacted our figures. Instead, we are experiencing consistently high demand in both the OEM and MRO segments, with no structural changes and zero canceled orders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking on Thursday morning, he added: \u201cDespite the current geopolitical uncertainties, our diversified and resilient portfolio enables us to deliver sustainable earnings growth, strong cash generation, and long-term value generation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Powder metal related AOGs to be resolved by year-end<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MTU\u2019s commercial maintenance division saw the highest percentage revenue increase, with adjusted revenue up 21% from \u20ac2.8 billion to \u20ac3.4 billion. Geared turbofan MRO accounted for around 46% of commercial maintenance in the first half of 2026, MTU said. GTF engines have faced durability issues linked to a contaminated powdered metal used in the manufacturing process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Bussman told investors that MTU\u2019s GTF fleet management plan continues to progress as expected.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_48923\" style=\"width: 692px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/leehamnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/GTFMROimage600px.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48923\" class=\"wp-image-48923\" src=\"https:\/\/leehamnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/GTFMROimage600px-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"682\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/leehamnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/GTFMROimage600px-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/leehamnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/GTFMROimage600px.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-48923\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>GTF\u2019s at a Pratt &amp; Whitney MRO Facility Image: RTX<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AOG levels have declined by around 25% year-over-year, he said, and based on the progress achieved, MTU expects powder metal-related AOGs to continue to decline and largely resolve by the end of 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added: \u201cWhile much of the attention is naturally focused on the A320neo fleet, it is equally important to look beyond that platform on the A220 and the E-jets. Engine-related groundings are expected to be fully eliminated by the end of the year, marking another important milestone in the recovery process.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Defense drives growth as commercial slips\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the year\u2019s first half, revenue in the military business grew by 15% to \u20ac298 million, helped by demand for the A400M military transporter\u2019s TP400-D6, the Eurofighter\u2019s EJ200 engine and the Sikorsky\u2019s CH-53K heavy-lift helicopter\u2019s T408.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was not universally positive. Revenue from MTU\u2019s commercial engine division slipped to \u20ac1.1 billion during the first six months of 2026, compared with \u20ac1.2 billion a year earlier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the decline, the company said its commercial series business delivered stable organic growth on a US dollar basis, supported by a favorable product mix, particularly for spare engines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aftermarket\u2019s strong performance continued, with spare parts revenue rising at a mid-teens percentage rate, driven by sustained demand for components supporting the V2500 and PW1100G engines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Guidance for 2026<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the same day that Rolls-Royce announced it was upgrading its guidance for the full year, MTU said it was on course only to meet its annual targets for 2026 and increased its free cash flow guidance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chief financial officer Katja Garcia Vila said: \u201cOur free cash flow has risen by 39% to \u20ac294 million in the first half of the year, our cash conversion rate of 59% clearly exceeds our expectations for the year as a whole. In light of this, we are now anticipating a cash conversion rate of 50-60% for 2026.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the full fiscal year, MTU is targeting adjusted revenue of between \u20ac9.2-\u20ac9.7 billion, with the commercial division serving as the biggest driver, benefiting from mid-to-high teens organic revenue growth. Adjusted EBIT for the year is forecast to sit around \u20ac1.35-1.45 billion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Order backlog grows\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MTU\u2019s order backlog stood at \u20ac30.4 billion at the end of June, 3% up year-over-year, amounting to three years of production workload, largely comprised of the GTF engine family and the V2500.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the Farnborough International Airshow in July, MTU secured orders totaling approximately $500 million.
