He was genuinely excited to meet me. But I was more excited to meet him \u2014 because he personified everything this column has\u00a0 been about since it was first published in 2012.<span id=\"more-17192\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"><strong>The Decision<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">His story began during the 2008 financial crisis. He and his wife grew up in rural Alabama and moved to Birmingham for a good job. Things were going well until the recession hit and he lost his job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">He searched desperately for work in Birmingham and the surrounding area. The opportunities simply weren\u2019t there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">His only options were to stay and suffer, or leave and prosper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">He and his wife moved to Dallas, where he found a good job in the financial industry. What he thought would be a temporary move \u2014 just a few years to weather the storm \u2014 turned into twelve years away from home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">There was a cost. Both sets of parents were upset. He had multiple conversations with his parents and in-laws, trying to help them understand this wasn\u2019t about abandoning Alabama or rejecting his roots. It was about survival and opportunity \u2014 about the simple economic reality that the jobs weren\u2019t there for him in Birmingham.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"><strong>The Bridge<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">Here\u2019s where the story took an unexpected turn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">When he started reading <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>ComebackTown<\/strong><\/span>, he found something he desperately needed: a way to explain his decision to his family. He began forwarding posts to his parents and in-laws \u2014 articles that laid out the economic realities he was facing, the structural challenges Birmingham confronted, and why leaving wasn\u2019t a rejection of home but a necessary response to circumstances beyond his control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">The column became a bridge. It gave him language and evidence to help his loved ones understand. It turned a family conflict into a conversation grounded in facts and regional economics rather than emotions and perceived abandonment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">I don\u2019t think I fully understood the impact of this work until that moment. Writing about regional economic development always felt important in an abstract sense. But hearing that these words had given someone the tools to preserve relationships while pursuing opportunity \u2014 that was something else entirely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"><strong>Back to Birmingham<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">After twelve years in Dallas, something shifted. He and his wife missed home and wanted to come back. It took time and patience, but eventually he found a good job in the financial industry here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">They made the move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">And they\u2019re happy. Genuinely, deeply happy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">His family \u2014 the same parents who had been so upset about his departure \u2014 are now ecstatic that he and his wife have returned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">His journey illustrates a truth ComebackTown has tried to communicate since its inception: regional economic strength depends on job creation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">He didn\u2019t leave Birmingham because he wanted to. He didn\u2019t want to spend twelve years away from his family and community. He left because the regional economy couldn\u2019t support him. When he finally had the chance to return, he took it immediately.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"><strong>In Birmingham, the Job Has to Find You<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">The <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a class=\"underline underline underline-offset-2 decoration-1 decoration-current\/40 hover:decoration-current focus:decoration-current\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/dallasedc.com\/companies-headquarters\/\">Dallas-Fort Worth area is now home to 24 Fortune 500 companies<\/a><\/strong><\/span> \u2014 Southwest Airlines, American Airlines, Texas Instruments, Toyota, Frito-Lay, and Kimberly-Clark among them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a class=\"underline underline underline-offset-2 decoration-1 decoration-current\/40 hover:decoration-current focus:decoration-current\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_corporations_with_a_major_presence_in_Birmingham,_Alabama\">Birmingham has two: Regions Financial and Vulcan Materials<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">My new friend explained that in Dallas, he had unlimited job opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">He said in Dallas, you find the job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">In Birmingham, the job has to find you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\"><strong>Focus Relentlessly on Job Creation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">This man\u2019s story is about understanding that thriving communities are built on economic opportunity. When people have good jobs in their hometowns, they stay. They raise families. They invest in their communities. They build lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">Conversely, when the jobs disappear, people leave \u2014 and that\u2019s not failure on their part.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">It\u2019s a failure of regional economic policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">The solution isn\u2019t complicated. We need to focus relentlessly on job creation.
