So this week, we\u2019re sharing some tips to communicate clearly about the vaccine\u00a0rollout.<\/p>\n<p>First, a little disclaimer: the vaccine landscape is changing fast! New shots may be available soon, and guidelines may shift as researchers gather data from ongoing trials. But based on what we know now, try these\u00a0tips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stress that all 3 authorized vaccines<\/strong> <strong>(Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson &amp; Johnson) are safe and effective. <\/strong>Understating vaccine benefits can be as harmful as overstating them\u200a\u2014\u200aso tell people how amazing these shots are! Just over a year into this devastating pandemic, we now have not 1, not 2, but 3 vaccines that can help prevent sickness and death from COVID-19. That\u2019s some good health news we can all shout from the rooftops.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t say they\u2019re exactly the same. <\/strong>After all the time we public health folks have spent <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/wehearthealthliteracy\/explaining-mrna-vaccines-6ad3c6c58491\">explaining mRNA technology<\/a>, people may wonder about the difference between that approach and Johnson &amp; Johnson\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/health\/johnson-johnson-covid-19-vaccine.html\">adenovirus delivery system<\/a>. But researchers haven\u2019t yet done an apples-to-apples, head-to-head-to-head clinical trial to compare the 3 vaccines. When they do, key differences may emerge\u200a\u2014\u200alike one proving more effective against a certain variant. So, to <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/wehearthealthliteracy\/writing-about-u-turns-in-health-advice-135e52329d67\">avoid pesky U-turns down the line<\/a>, stick to the facts: we\u2019re still gathering data\u200a\u2014\u200abut we know they\u2019ve all gone through rigorous safety testing, and we know that all 3 work really\u00a0well.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Encourage everyone to get the first vaccine they\u2019re offered.<\/strong> Since we don\u2019t yet know enough to say whether one shot is better than another, it makes sense for health communicators to encourage people to get whichever vaccine they\u2019re offered first. Because the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/wellness\/best-vaccine-johnson-moderna-pfizer\/2021\/02\/25\/acf6527e-76af-11eb-9537-496158cc5fd9_story.html\">best vaccine is the one you can get<\/a> <em>before<\/em> you come into contact with the virus. And with the pandemic still raging and vaccine demand still outstripping supply, now is not the time to shop\u00a0around.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be honest about everything we know and don\u2019t know. <\/strong>Experts are hopeful that the vaccines will prevent people from spreading the virus\u200a\u2014\u200abut we need more time and data to know for sure. We\u2019re also not sure exactly how long protection from the vaccines will last. But we <em>can<\/em> assure people that any of the 3 vaccines will help protect them (at least in the short term) from getting sick with COVID-19.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep up the calls for vaccine equity.<\/strong> As vaccination stats roll in across the country, it\u2019s clear that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/coronavirus-covid-19\/issue-brief\/latest-data-on-covid-19-vaccinations-race-ethnicity\/\">white people are getting vaccines at much higher rates than Black and Hispanic people<\/a>. And since we know that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/community\/health-equity\/race-ethnicity.html\">racism and other social factors make Black and Hispanic people more likely to get sick and die from COVID-19<\/a>, these vaccine disparities are not only unjust, but deadly. As health communicators, we need to name this problem, prioritize outreach and access for communities of color, and call for policymakers and institutions to do\u00a0better.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Offer easy-to-understand guidance for fully vaccinated people. <\/strong>Once people get their shots, they\u2019re likely to have a whole lot of questions! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/fully-vaccinated.html\">CDC now offers some specific guidelines<\/a>, but the gist is: fully vaccinated people can do more things safely (huzzah!), but they can\u2019t behave like the pandemic is over. For example, we\u2019ll all still be wearing our masks to the grocery store for a while. But fully vaccinated friends can hang out indoors without masks, just like in olden times!
