As a \u2018woman of a certain age\u2019 Jane Horwood, owner of preloved clothing boutique Trash Chic is only too aware of the pressure many women feel to conform to age-old fashion rules.<\/strong><\/p>\n Inspired by the BBC TV series\u00a0Riot Women<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 in which a group of middle-aged ladies set up a punk band and find themselves in the process \u2013 she launched the RIOT WOMEN OF CAMBRIDGE, a celebration of women breaking free from these constraints and embracing the freedom to dress for themselves.<\/p>\n As women reach their 40s, 50s, and beyond, many find themselves feeling invisible in a society that often limits how older women are expected to dress. Recent research by Women\u2019s brand Klass found that 44% of the 2,000 females it surveyed shared that they\u2019ve felt invisible from as young as 36.<\/p>\n \u201cI want to give women a space to feel empowered and confident in their clothes, no matter their age. Too often, women over 40 are made to feel they should \u2018dress their age\u2019 but I believe there are no rules when it comes to style. Fashion should be fun and expressive, and the\u00a0RIOT WOMEN\u00a0are reflecting just that: confidently embracing their unique style and letting their clothes reflect their personality.\u201d<\/p>\n The RIOT WOMEN OF CAMBRIDGE movement involved a photoshoot with 5 of Jane\u2019s Trash Chic customers and a follow up shoot at her pop-up shop in Grand Arcade, Cambridge. Other women were invited to come along, rediscover their fashion freedom, embrace bold quirky outfits, and have their photo taken by a professional photographer.<\/p>\n For many women, years spent in corporate jobs or raising families often meant toning down their personal style to fit in.
