{"id":357491,"date":"2026-07-10T08:28:43","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T08:28:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/acting\/david-hornsby-and-the-lost-art-of-making-the-impossible-look-easy-acting-classes-coaching-los-angeles\/"},"modified":"2026-07-10T08:28:43","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T08:28:43","slug":"david-hornsby-and-the-lost-art-of-making-the-impossible-look-easy-acting-classes-coaching-los-angeles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=357491","title":{"rendered":"David Hornsby and the Lost Art of Making the Impossible Look Easy &#8211; Acting Classes &#038; Coaching | Los Angeles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day Three of our whirlwind SeeTheTonyNominees\u201926 Tour turned into what can only be described as The David Hornsby Experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David, dashingly dashing from cocktail party to cocktail party, somehow found time to usher us into the newly renovated Palace Theatre just before\u00a0curtain\u00a0for THE LOST BOYS, the Broadway musical he co-wrote with his longtime writing partner, Chris Hoch.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">THE LOST BOYS arrived on Broadway with a mountain of acclaim, and after seeing it, I understand why. It was a phenomenal, mind-blowing, thrilling evening in the theatre.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mostly.\u00a0I have just one small complaint.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0first 98 or so percent of the\u00a0show\u00a0was so\u00a0amazingly\u00a0well-done that I was shocked by the lack of attention paid to the\u00a0final moments. They\u00a0felt oddly undercooked by comparison. Afterward, I asked David whether the director simply forgot to direct the final scenes and\u00a0wandered off for coffee. It was the theatrical equivalent of watching an Olympic\u00a0skater nail quadruple axel after quadruple axel and then end their program with a couple\u00a0crossovers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, I may have been the only person bothered by it. The audience\u2019s wild applause and immediate standing ovation suggested that everyone else was having the time of their lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">THE LOST BOYS is one of the most ambitious pieces of theatrical storytelling\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0seen in years. The spectacle is extraordinary, but\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0not what\u00a0stayed with me.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was\u00a0the\u00a0story.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve\u00a0spent most of my professional life working with\u00a0actors on\u00a0acting. Because of that,\u00a0I think writers\u00a0often receive less credit than they deserve. We celebrate performances, songs, choreography, costumes, and effects\u2014and we should. But none of those things exist without a script.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No story, no musical.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No story, no characters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No story, no songs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No story, no breathtaking moments that leave audiences cheering.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything begins with the page.\u00a0And\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0what makes David\u2019s accomplishment so remarkable.\u00a0While writing and producing television, acting in multiple series, developing films, raising a family, and somehow\u00a0maintaining\u00a0the demeanor of a normal human being, David spent years helping\u00a0to\u00a0shepherd THE LOST BOYS from idea to Broadway stage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people know David\u00a0as an actor \u2014\u00a0from\u00a0the likes of\u00a0IT\u2019S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA, where he created one of television\u2019s most memorable recurring characters\u00a0and\u00a0MYTHIC QUEST, among so\u00a0many other memorable roles. What many people\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0realize is that\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0also been one of the creative forces behind those shows as a writer and producer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u00a0fewer\u00a0people know is that the qualities that make David remarkable have\u00a0very little\u00a0to do with his r\u00e9sum\u00e9.\u00a0He\u2019s\u00a0an artist, a husband, a father, a loyal friend, and one of the kindest people\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0encountered\u00a0in this business.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0the part that never appears in biographies or credits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years ago, David overheard me talking about sending\u00a0birthday cards to my actors. I wanted something personal and\u00a0original, but I\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0draw, and I\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0sure what to do.\u00a0A few days later, an envelope appeared on my desk.\u00a0Inside was the most extraordinary\u00a0caricature of me\u00a0I had ever seen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David\u00a0had drawn\u00a0me wearing a \u201cDare to Suck!\u201d T-shirt\u00a0\u2013\u00a0a phrase\u00a0my\u00a0actors\u00a0have heard me say a thousand times.\u00a0Pencils stuck out of my hair\u00a0everywhere\u00a0because I was forever\u00a0forgetting they were there.\u00a0I was barefoot because I\u00a0hate wearing\u00a0shoes. I was carrying a bag overflowing with scripts and covered in my\u00a0actors\u2019\u00a0favorite\u00a0Leslyisms.\u00a0There were stacks of hilariously retitled acting books, chips scattered across the floor because I am always binging, and a broken computer nearby because my computer\u00a0is\u00a0always\u00a0on the brink of death.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was astonished.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because David could draw.\u00a0Lots of people can draw.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was astonished because every detail was true.\u00a0The pencils.\u00a0The bare feet.\u00a0The chips.\u00a0The broken computer.\u00a0The ridiculous acting books.\u00a0The \u201cDare to Suck\u201d shirt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of those things mattered individually.\u00a0Together they revealed something much rarer.\u00a0David had been paying attention.\u00a0Every affectionate, ridiculous, specific detail meant he had taken the time to notice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shortly afterward, an entire series of original cards appeared.\u00a0I used them for years. Eventually, I turned them into posters that\u00a0still hang\u00a0on the walls of one of our classrooms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To this day, I am\u00a0lucky enough to\u00a0be\u00a0literally\u00a0surrounded\u00a0by David\u2019s artwork.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We all spend our lives hoping to be understood.\u00a0The caricature\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0a drawing.\u00a0It was evidence.\u00a0Evidence that someone had been paying\u00a0attention.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I introduced you to David at a party, your first impression would not be that you were meeting one of the most prolific creative talents working in entertainment today.\u00a0You\u2019d\u00a0think you were meeting a guy who was\u00a0inordinately\u00a0interested in hearing\u00a0all\u00a0about you.\u00a0In fact, after THE LOST BOYS, when we all went to dinner together, David\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0ask what I thought of the show. He\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0ask whether I thought it would win awards. He\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0ask what I thought of his work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He asked about our trip.\u00a0Did we like the hotel?\u00a0Where had we eaten?\u00a0What other shows\u00a0had\u00a0we seen?\u00a0How were we enjoying New York?\u00a0He asked\u00a0about us.\u00a0That may not sound remarkable, but in an industry filled with people talking about themselves, it is.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David\u2019s\u00a0funny without trying to be funny.\u00a0Smart without trying to be smart.\u00a0Successful without needing you to know how successful he is.\u00a0Those qualities are rarer than talent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for THE LOST BOYS, whether it should have won more Tony Awards is a debate\u00a0I\u2019ll\u00a0leave to\u00a0the\u00a0people\u00a0who get to make those decisions.\u00a0\u00a0What I do know is that David Hornsby and Chris Hoch created something genuinely original.
