Sometimes Kindness
\nActivist funds are used in pretty simple, straightforward ways.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Purchasing groceries for neighbors in
\nneed.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Buying thank you presents for
\nlocal teachers.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Surprising strangers
\nwith a gift.<\/span><\/p>\n

But other times the money finds
\nits way out into the world to try and right a wrong.\u00a0 <\/span>Repair a wound.\u00a0 <\/span>Or make a very painful situation just a
\nlittle bit better.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s what happened
\nrecently when a young friend reached out with this message, <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDear Mrs. Susan,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of my friend\u2019s dad has
\nbrain cancer and today the doctor\u00a0said that he might only be able to live
\nfor a few more weeks. I was wondering if you had any ideas of ways that I could
\nmake my friend feel better and not as sad. Thank you so much for your help.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

My heart ached.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I knew the dad that she
\nwas talking about.\u00a0 <\/span>He was our neighbor,
\na very cool man who had the exact same diagnosis that my sister had a few years
\nago.\u00a0 <\/span>When I had read that he had
\nglioblastoma (GBM) and that his wife was asking for help, David and I pitched
\nin.\u00a0 <\/span>They needed rides for him to get him
\nto and from the seemingly endless appointments that come with a GBM diagnosis \u2013
\ndoctor visits, radiation, nutritionist\u2026\u00a0
\n<\/span>We signed up for some shifts of transportation, and Kindness Activist
\ndonated $100 to the GoFundMe for the family.<\/span><\/p>\n

And now my young friend
\nwas reaching out asking for ideas of how to help her friend, the man\u2019s child, \u201cfeel
\nbetter and not so sad\u201d.\u00a0 <\/span>Oh, it is all so
\nhard.<\/span><\/p>\n

I replied to the email: \u201cI
\nknow your friend\u2019s dad, too.\u00a0 It makes me very sad that the dr said the
\ntumors have spread.\u00a0 You probably don’t know this, but my big sister
\nAnnette died of the same kind of cancer.\u00a0
\n<\/span>When your friend\u2019s dad was first diagnosed, Mr. David and I drove him to
\nsome doctor visits for appointments.\u00a0 Kindness Activist also donated to
\nthe Go Fund Me.\u00a0 I like your idea of finding a way to help your friend
\nfeel better and not so sad.\u00a0 Do you have any ideas what we could do for
\nthem?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I mean, we could do
\nsomething like take them out for ice cream and a movie…\u00a0 Or to a play (I
\nthink they love plays, right?).\u00a0 But honestly, in my experience with my
\nsister, they might not want to be away from their dad much right now.\u00a0 Knowing
\nthat there is not much time left makes you want to be sure to be there for
\nevery moment you can (in some people – maybe your friend is not like that,
\nobviously everyone is different).\u00a0 Do they like to read?\u00a0 I know
\ntheir mom does. <\/span><\/p>\n

Let me know if you have
\nsome ideas, ok?\u00a0 You are so smart and caring and kind.\u00a0 I know the
\nMOST important thing now is for you to be their FRIEND.\u00a0 They are likely
\nvery scared and sad.\u00a0\u00a0Please write me back and let me know if you
\nhave some ideas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

We went back and forth via
\nemail for a bit and settled on a gift basket.\u00a0
\n<\/span>I would take my friend to Target, and she would choose items that she knew
\nher friend liked.\u00a0 <\/span>It seemed like a solid
\nplan.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Until he died before we could
\nget the gift basket together.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was so sad.\u00a0 <\/span>I suspected that my young friend had not
\nexperience a lot of death or grief \u2013 not many children have.\u00a0 <\/span>And I imagined how frightened she must
\nbe.\u00a0 <\/span>I mean, if your friend\u2019s dad can
\ndie, doesn\u2019t that point out the vulnerability of your own father?\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She emailed again \u2013 she had
\nseen the news about his death.\u00a0 <\/span>I think
\nwe both felt awful that we had not been able to make time to get the basket
\ntogether, but we set a date to go shopping and her mom came along.<\/span><\/p>\n

This child was so
\nTHOUGHTFUL.\u00a0 <\/span>I mean, I know that she is
\nkind and caring, but she was so careful in choosing what to buy.\u00a0 <\/span>She looked over all of the candy before
\nmaking selections.\u00a0 <\/span>She carefully debated
\nwhich type of popcorn would be best, which drink (\u201cI know she loves tea!\u201d).\u00a0 <\/span>She chose a nice journal, then we debated
\nwhich pens would be best and examined all of the choices.\u00a0 <\/span>She chose a perfect basket to put everything
\nin.\u00a0 <\/span>And to finish it off \u2013 a gift card
\nfor Fortnite, which she knew her friend loved.<\/span><\/p>\n

We checked out, they
\ndropped me back at home.\u00a0 <\/span>She added a
\nnote she had written for her friend and they went to deliver the basket.\u00a0 <\/span>She had a plan: put the basket in front of
\nthe door, get back in her car, and text the family to let them know it was
\nthere.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

It wasn\u2019t long before I
\ngot another email, <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDear Mrs. Susan, <\/span><\/p>\n

When we dropped of the
\ngift basket I put it on their step, knocked and then ran to my car. Their
\nsister answered the door gave two thumbs ups and a heart. After my friend messaged
\nme and said \u201comg thank you!!\u201d And sent some emojis I said \u201cI hope you like it\u201d
\nand they said \u201cI do!\u201d I think that they really appreciated it. Thank you again
\nfor letting us use kindness money.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Will some candy, snacks, a
\njournal, and Fortnite make the pain go away?<\/span><\/p>\n

No.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But maybe it will be a
\nreminder that the child is not alone.\u00a0 <\/span>That
\ntheir friends are there for them, ready to listen when they want to talk.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because that is what
\nfriends are for.<\/span><\/p>\n

Heart emoji.<\/span><\/p>\n
