If we are to believe recent headlines in the media, people are heartlessly dumping their \u201cpandemic puppies\u201d in shelters. USA Today published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2021\/05\/11\/pandemic-pups-being-returned-months-after-their-adoption\/5038295001\/\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> earlier this month, \u201cEveryone wanted a puppy when the pandemic began, but now those dogs are being returned.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But are these headlines accurate? Are shelters at risked of being overwhelmed with abandoned pets? The New York Times published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/22\/us\/dog-adoptions-pandemic.html\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> last week, responding to the sensationalist headlines about returning dogs previously welcomed in the \u201cpandemic puppy boom.\u201d Says Michael Levenson for the Times, \u201cMonthly reports from PetPoint, a website that aggregates data from more than 1,100 animal welfare organizations in the United States, suggest that while shelters have experienced an increase in pets coming in, their numbers are merely returning to the levels reported before the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">According to Kogut, this supposed crisis is simply not real, and it is not supported by national shelter data.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Kogut writes: <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:40px;white-space:pre-wrap;\" class=\"\"><em>It\u00a0is\u00a0assumed that these pet parents are not aware of or will not expend resources to send their pups to doggy daycare, hire dog walkers and dog trainers, or even advocate for pets at work programs, like so many other pet parents have done in the past.\u00a0Does this sound like a reasonable conclusion?
