The distinction was awarded by the the Energy\u00a0Transition Institute at UMass Amherst, which serves as one of the administrators of the BetterBev\u00a0recognition program through a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s (EPA) Pollution\u00a0Prevention Program. Time &amp; Materials joins a growing number of beverage producers in Massachusetts\u00a0and beyond that have earned recognition for their environmentally conscious business practices. While\u00a0brewing is resource-intensive by nature, there are many opportunities for most businesses to reduce their\u00a0environmental impact and improve their bottom line.<\/p>\n<p>Among the notable environmental attributes at Time &amp; Materials is a commitment to sourcing local\u00a0ingredients from Valley Malt and Four Star Farms, both located in Massachusetts. Buying local decreases\u00a0scope 3 delivery chain greenhouse gas emissions. When the brewing process is complete, spent grains go\u00a0to local farms that use them to supplement its animal feed. Even the distribution mode is local, with\u00a0almost all of its beer sold at nearby farmers markets. That\u2019s a big deal when you consider that packaging\u00a0format and distribution is responsible for the most significant environmental impact of beer production.<\/p>\n<p>A commitment to thoughtful standard operating procedures also helped Time &amp; Materials earn\u00a0recognition. Process water is captured and reused, all 4-packs are packaged with rescued and reused can\u00a0carriers, and an electric brew house powered in part by renewable energy decreases emissions notably\u00a0compared to most other breweries.<\/p>\n<p>The BetterBev program was launched to help beverage producers understand their environmental impact,\u00a0increase efficiency, improve health and safety, conserve natural resources, and improve their businesses.\u00a0Recognition is earned after a beverage producer\u2019s local BetterBev administrator works with them to\u00a0assess their environmental practices and impact. The process covers a range of criteria including water\u00a0and energy use, waste, and even environmental culture.
