<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\nROBERT HENKE \u2013 SIGNAL TO NOISE VOL. II<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\nRobert Henke<\/a><\/em><\/strong> released the first edition of Signal To Noise<\/em> in 2004. The CD presented two tracks called Signal To Noise I<\/em> <\/strong>and II<\/em>, as well as \u2018Studies for Thunder\u2019. (The latter track is one of the most impressive sounds of thunder you\u2019ll ever hear \u2013 but it should be noted that the sounds are completely artificial and not natural.)<\/p>\nThe Signal to Noise <\/em>tracks on that album were created with the Yamaha SY77 FM synthesizer<\/a> dating from from 1989 \u2013 a synth often used in Henke<\/em><\/strong>\u2018s work<\/em>. But it\u2019s not just the synth you hear: Henke<\/strong><\/em> \u2018applied\u00a0filtering, pitch-shifting\u00a0and processed the material using\u00a0granular resynthesis, aiming to achieve\u00a0erosion\u00a0and\u00a0diffusion\u00a0of the sound, whilst preserving some of the original movements.\u00a0The signal became the noise\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\nMore than 20 years later, Signal To Noise Vol. II<\/em><\/strong> picks up where the first volume left off: this time with six tracks Signal To Noise III \u2013 IX.<\/em> As could be expected, the album once again offers 66 minutes of extremely immersive dronescapes. <\/p>\nWhile entirely synthetic in origin, Robert Henke<\/em><\/strong> shapes them into something profoundly organic. This may very well be the result of the compositional process: \u2018For each piece, I recorded four tracks: one with a very low note, one with a medium-low note, one with a high note, and one where I played freely, following my intuition.\u2019<\/em>
The tracks were completed with some editing, noise reduction and occasionally adding reverb and pitch shifting \u2013 and the result is a perfect (drone) ambient album to drift away on. <\/p>\nIf you like(d) 2004\u2019s Signal To Noise<\/em>, this follow-up clearly is a no-brainer. On the other hand \u2013 if you like this music and are not yet familiar with the 2004 CD, be sure to check that album out too (even though the CD version itself it out of stock). <\/p>\nNote: you can find the digital version on Bandcamp<\/a>, but not the physical CD.
